***BigTen Finals Thread***

Iowa needs to use the free release when the action is stopped, we get tied up too much by guys reaching back. In the ADS case today he needs to know if he gets a TD to get the hell away right away. He tried to ride some and then Gross leached on.
Agree . If you know you’re cutting him just show the ref you want to go neutral. Doesn’t waste any clock time that way.

You ever think the reason there isn’t any competition is that he’s so damn good. He makes it look easy...and when it’s hard those people jump a weight, example...Sebass, and Suriano.
Maybe, but hard to argue about OW.

Not a knock on Spencer. Just that the weight Rivera went through had the top guys in it. Spencer didn’t wrestle a single AA.

Like I said, barring one of the biggest upsets in NCAA history, Spencer is winning the Hodge.

And majored, tech galled, and pinned all of them. He doesn’t pick his opponents he just crushes their souls,

You are correct crabby, 33 was brutal. Rivera coming back from injury, yada yada.

Lee looked good on his feet. I am not a big fan of calling stalling guys on bottom when the other guy is riding parallel.

DeSanto trouble finishing shots

Murin lost two tight matches he could avenge

Lugo is a tank

KY.... Just not as talented as our other guys.

Bull. Amazing match.

I didnt say it on here but not surprised Hall won.

Assad did ok for a 19 year old.

Warner usually good but lays an egg sometimed

Cass

I am worried for DeSanto, Murin, Young, Assad and too a lesser degree Warner.

But we will win that team trophy

Seabass looked great. Pletcher same.

I wasnt surprised Steveson won and he called out all the haters saying he was ducking

I never understood the Hall hate on here... especially given his relationship with Metcalf
I tend to agree. He can be hard to take at times but generally seems well grounded, respectful in victory & defeat. Wrestling is an emotional sport. I can’t imagine the pressures of wrestling for Iowa or PSU. I’m able to give him a pass when he wins & his celebrations are a little much for my taste. I will miss cheering against he’s gone. Go Hawks!

PISCATAWAY, New Jersey – The top-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team won the 2020 Big Ten Championship on Sunday, scoring 157.5 team points and crowning three individual champions.

Alex Marinelli defended his 165-pound conference title, and Spencer Lee and Pat Lugo became first time champions, leading Iowa to its first outright team title since 2010 and its 36th conference title overall.

“Job well done. We are not downplaying this,” said Iowa head coach Tom Brands. “The reason why it does get downplayed is because there is another important event. It’s cliché but we have to get ready and there is work to do. But we definitely give ourselves credit. You don’t see what is behind the scenes. We appreciate a job well done, and that was a job well done and it was a battle.”

INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONS

Lee led 4-1 after one, 6-1 after two, and with more than four minutes of riding time, added 10 points in the third to defeat No. 2 Devin Schroder, 16-2, at 125 pounds. The Big Ten Conference title is the first of his career.

“I just have to keep scoring points and maybe work on my offense a little more. There are things to improve on. I think that (were) are a lot of slow moments, both just working on top and bottom probably pretty boring. Maybe I need to get back on my feet some more.”

Lugo’s takedown with 1:09 left in the first period was the difference in his 2-1 win over top-seeded Sammy Sasso at 149.

“I just grinded my teeth and got down. I got to where I was good. If I’m in my ties I’m the best in the world, not just the country, the best in the world. That’s how much my confidence has grown since last year, just being around guys like Spencer Lee, Alex Marinelli, Michael Kemerer. That winning is contagious, that confidence is contagious. It’s just like catching the flu; you hang out with guys that have the flu and you’re going to catch the flu. If you hang out with guys that’s winning you’re going to start winning.”

Marinelli, the No. 2 seed at 165, scored a takedown with 10 seconds left in the third to break a 1-1 tie and earn a 3-2 win over top-seeded Vincenzo Joseph.

“When it’s the Big Ten tournament you know you are going to have to beat the guy on the other side of the bracket if you want to win the tournament. So, yeah, he’s on my mind but I’m taking it a match at a time. When the moment came, I attacked on it. I have great coaches that preach staying in your match, tackle the first one then the next one, then the finals.”

AWARDS SEASON

Lee was named Big Ten Conference Wrestler of the Year. He heads into the NCAA Championships ranked No. 1 in the country with an 18-0 record. He has outscored his opponents 254-18.

Tom Brands was named Big Ten Conference Coach of the Year. It is the fourth time he has earned the honor, more than any other coach in school history. He was previously recognized in 2008, 2009, and 2010 following conference titles. Iowa has five Big Ten championships under Brands (2008, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2020).

ON TO THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

All nine of Iowa’s placewinnerss earned automatic berths to the national tournament in Minneapolis on March 19-21. The Big Ten Conference tournament is one of seven NCAA qualifying tournaments across the country. The NCAA is expected to announce the tournament qualifiers Tuesday. The entire brackets will be released Wednesday. Iowa’s Kaleb Young is eligible for an at-large berth at 157.

Kaleb has to feel like crap, let's hope he gets the ship righted.

Regarding Young's tournament, both guys who beat him had great weekends, finishing 3rd and 4th. Robb was a hair away from a finals appearance. Looks like an unfortunate draw, though he should still beat those guys.

I have BTN on my tv and BTN plus on desktop. But its going to be tough watching anything but Steveson v. Parris
I just paused my DirecTV and then would watch on BTN+ 3rd & 5th place matches I wanted, and then back to DirecTV.

I had them both connected to my 85" TV and just switched back and forth between inputs. :)

GS is a talent, imagine if he was a little better conditioned and turned it on all the time.

He's too immature IMO, not his cardio....he doesn't turn it on...but his sitting around not caring schtick I used to think was because he wasn't in shape or nervous as a freshman. Now I realize he's insecure (acting like he's better than the sport). He does it 10 seconds into the match. After Dan Gable came over to him in Carver to say hi (because he's named after Dan Gable) congratulate him and take a picture GS track interview was complimentary and appreciative of what carver brings etc. He's just an insecure kid who needs a father figure/mentor. At his age though he's fully accountable for his actions, and I don't see college life or being a superstar as helpful. Jesus, did I just write something compassionate about Gable Steveson? Too many beers and can't sleep

Regarding GS... given how fortunate he was last year when the DA refused to file criminal charges, you'd think he would show humility and appreciation that he was given another chance .

Given the seriousness of the "alleged" incident..he could be sitting in Stillwater State prison under different circumstances.

Just don't understand why he's such a douche?

Hate to bring this up but I just got done watching 165 & 174 matches at Big Tens. Great match at 165 and could watch those two another twenty times! 174 was kinda anticlimactic after the "danger points for Hall. The thing that has me riled up is that both announcers said numerous times how dominant Hall was! He deserved to win but just brought up feelings again of what I think of Gibbons and his announcing. Did he bring up how dominant Kem was in the dual at Carver? I was there and I don't remember ever hearing the audio of the dual. Sorry for bringing this up but times are slow.

It's not your imagination. His subtle dislike of Iowa is driven less by his love for Penn State than for his love of Iowa State. Everybody has a bias and it's tough to turn it off even when you think you are. I would be terrible at that job--I'd be openly cheering for Iowa and cursing the opponents. Give me Ironside for every Iowa match.

I'm not embarrassed to admit it, but I've watched this match from start to finish about 10 times.

Thanks for the video. I never once heard them say how dominant Kem was but I'm not surprised. Thought it was funny how Gibbons didn't want to make excuses for Hall in the first match but, "he spent a lot of energy cheering on his teammates in that first dual". Gibbons is getting worse.

I think you guys are just a little much with this Gibbons stuff. I don't see any issue. Look the guy is a former ISU wrestler and coach so there is built in dislike of Iowa but I don't see it as over the top. I also don't think he loves PSU. Sure he likes Cael for his ISU legacy but Gibbons had a real issue with the Andrew Long thing and that bailout. Go back and look how uncomfortable that interview was with Andrew after they won the BIGS that year. Just flat out awkward.

I just think Gibbons loves great wrestlers and sometimes they wear PSU singlets. Its more individual than team. I feel he gives the Iowa elite guys some compliments. Esp Spencer. But he is still an ISU guy so that's in the DNA.

I don't see any reason to single Gibbons out anymore so that also point out that Tim Johnson and C. Pyles are also huge Hawk homers who announce Iowa too. So some give and take IMO. Whining about Gibbons is just as pathetic on this board as whinning about Pyles is on the PSU board. So not every announcer kisses our butts..OMG the horror.

Just focus on Shane Sparks. I don't see him as having a favorite...he just likes his cocaine!
