Classes are very unbalanced

As a reminder, you can have 13 on scholarship in the men's game (for the women, there is talk of reducing scholarships from 15 to 13 to spread talent across the country and to increase parity; perhaps it is time).

With Trey Dickerson quitting the team on Feb 23, some interesting points:

* 6 players for the 2019 graduating class. We could have up to SEVEN on scholarship for the 2015 class (graduating in 2019). With Christian Williams committing on March 16, we are up to SIX.

* 1 player for the 2017 graduating class. Trey would have graduated in 2017; now, it is just Jok.

* 1 player for the 2018 graduating class. We have just Uhl as part of the 2018 graduating class.

* We now have 11 on scholarship for the 2014-2015 season but only 10 are available (Brady Ellingon redshirted during the 2014-15 season).

* We are set to have 12 on scholarship for the 2015-2016 season. 6 of the 12 are set to graduate in 2019.

Here is the break down of the Iowa roster by graduating class (as a reminder, the 2014 graduating class, Fran's first recruiting class, took a hit, where we had 5 departures!):

Graduating Class : Players

2021: 1--6'5" SG Connor McCaffery (***)
2020: 1--6'7" PF Cordell Pemsl (***)
2019: 6--6'6" SF Brandon Hutton (***), 6'6" SG Andrew Fleming (***), 6'7" SF Ahmad Wagner (***); 6'5" SF Isaiah Moss (***), 6'4" SG Brady Ellingson (***; was redshirted in 2014-15 season); 6'6" combo guard Christian Williams (***)
2018: 1--6'8" SF Dominique Uhl (***)
2017: 1--SG Peter Jok
2016: 4--PG Anthony Clemmons, PG Mike Gesell, C Adam Woodbury, SF Jarrod Uthoff
2015: 4--SG Josh Ogelsby, PF Aaron White, C Gabe Olaseni, SG Kyle Denning

2014: 5--PF Melsahn Basabe, SG Devyn Marble, PF Zach McCabe, SF Darius Stokes (graduated & transferred), C Kyle Meyer (granted release & transferred)

Head Coach is unbalanced also

This is far less relevant in basketball than football. First, younger players seem to contribute far earlier in their careers. Second, we will likely experience transfers in and out that may rebalance the roster.

it will be interesting to see if all 6 are here in 2019
Especially when you see most are wing players. Not enough minutes for everyone to be happy.

yeah i am a bit confused.

we are in huge need of a PG and a big; you would think we would be attractive to STUD prospects because:

* we tied for 3rd in the B1G this year; its not like we are a door mat in our conference any more
* we are able to promise a lot of playing time
* our facilities are great
* we run a fun system where you get up and down the court
* fan support is great

this concern is completely senseless in the sport of basketball.

there will always be attrition/transfers due to grades, conduct, homesickness, unhappy about PT, etc.

Freshmen can play and play well in this sport. this should be of no concern whatsoever.

It seems entirely possible that Williams redshirts next year which would balance out the classes a bit more.

Some have speculated that Ellingson might transfer because some don't see him ever getting significant minutes. I'm a little higher on Ellingson than most because I think he will be a terrific shooter for us once he's healthy (I think many are jaded towards 3 point specialists because of Oglesby's struggles). If I'm wrong, however, and Ellingson does transfer, then our classes will once again be balanced.

There is going to be a battle for playing time for the incoming class. Once our juniors graduate, there will be a lot of playing time available and lot of competition for that playing time. Other than Jok and Uhl, there are no rotation players returning. Two of the incoming 6 will likely be starters several others will be major rotation players.

I see why we took Williams. We are going to need dribble guys that year. I don't think that is Hutton or Fleming's skill set.

Hutton is considered a lock down defender at SF
Fleming is a dribble player that can play the 1-2-3, he reminds me of Horner, with his skillset.

Yes, I was hoping we would get a dribble player!

Scott Dochterman of the CR Gazette said transfers will, eventually, probably happen because the better players will see more playing time and those not getting minutes will look elsewhere

It is just puzzling to me that Iowa has to go thru this type of process in year 5 of the Fran era; so we start with 6 and end up with 1 or more eventually transferring out?

With Frans system, these kids can all get significant minutes in two years. Next year we have the four juniors, Jok and Uhl who will all play alot. I would be surprised if at least two or three of the incoming 5 don't see alot of playing time, my guess is Wagner, Hutton and one of the guards.

We may see a redshirt from one of the commits also.

OnceaHawk, I have no worries at all about this so called imbalance. The cream will rise to the top.

I suppose we could call it unbalance. You could also call it direct competition for only a few spots, which almost guarantees the best players will see the time.

It happens to many programs and will work itself out. I like it better than the alternative of not filling vacancies.

This.

The only concern I have is that in 2017 and 2018 we have just one scholarship to offer. Yes, transfers could change things, but they often happen late in the game and I don't want to see Iowa start over-recruiting counting on players to leave for lack of playing time.

It's a nasty side of the already distasteful avalanche of transfers.

Would that we could enjoy 3 scholarships, three players, every year and a thirteenth scholarship just for when opportunity knocks.

But we don't get that. Nobody gets that anymore. That is the nature of the game.

And as Coach McCaffery has said, these days so much recruiting is about having openings available. Maybe the new way to look at it is the more openings we have, the better the players we should attract?

I don't know, the old recruit, retain and develop seems to have a new wrinkle. Recruit half a team, retain the best, replace as needed, and develop.
