We've said it before and we will say it again. This weekend is a big series for Iowa baseball, going to Michigan.

Games are Friday @ 3:00pm, Saturday @ 3:30pm - On BTN, and Sunday @ Noon

Michigan won 3/4 games last year including the regular season series 2-1 and took a game in the B1G tournament.

Michigan is good offensively as they hit .301 and have an on-base percentage of .384. They are led by Jackson Glines, Carmen Benedetti, Jacob Cronenworth, and Travis Maezes. Glines hits like .380 with a .473 on base percentage.

Pitching wise they are good and can strike out a lot of people. They are led by Cronenworth, Evan Hill, and Brett Adcock. Hill was hurt earlier in the year and has come back in the last 2-3 weeks.

This series is one of those that concerns me the most as it seems no matter what, Iowa just hasn't had any luck against Michigan. Hopefully this year that changes.

Looks like Iowa is going with Hickman, Peyton, and Mathews in that order. Hickman is now the Friday starter due to last weekends switchup due to Peyton's injury.

This could be the series that defines the season. It's not TOTALLY do or die. A Michigan sweep would be very damaging, but basically anything short of that and the Hawks will still have a lot to play for and still be in pretty solid position. But if they want to catch Illinois for the regular season conf. title, basically it needs to be 2-1 or 3-0. 1-2 in Ann Arbor probably dooms those chances.

The main thing that gives Ol' Doodle pause is that we were performing pretty well on the road, and then came home for 2 weeks. So it's been a while since we've had to play away from the "friendly confines" which makes Doodle wonder how the guys will respond. Regardless, it's pretty amazing just to be having these types of conversations about Iowa BASEBALL. It has been a LOOOOONG time coming folks! Way too long in fact.

Hope more fans become interested. There was a great podcast a week or 2 ago from HR with rick heller. It is long but rick went to great length tslking about building the program and training the administration how to be a baseball program and training the fans how to be baseball fans. Brilliant!

He talks about how Dave Vanhorn did that at Nebraska and is now doijg it at Arkansas.

If you have time, find it and listen toit. it is fantastic.

You won't get a better interview from an iowa coach than this one

Iowa wins 13-7 in Ann Arbor.

Iowa had 15 hits today.

Dan Potempa was 4-6 with 3 RBIs
Nick Roscetti was 2-4 with 4 RBIs
Tyler Peyton was 3-5 with 2 RBIs

Blake Hickman did struggle going 2 1/3 and only throwing 59 pitches. Ryan Erickson really bridged things going 5 2/3 and I believe he threw 93 pitches. Josh Martsching came on in the 9th and only tossed 1/3 as he struggled. Nick Hibbing finished the final 2/3 of the 9th.

Pitching on both sides really struggled with free bases and even a lot of at-bats had full counts. So not exactly sure what was going on up in Ann Arbor today.

We do it again on Saturday @ 3:30pm and it's on BTN

hope the bats keep hot tomorrow (and the next few weeks). Love that our Friday night guy is still sitting here for tomorrows game.

Sometimes you're gonna win with pitching and defense, and sometimes you're gonna win a slugfest. The key is, truly good teams don't have only one recipe for success.

Clearly the Hawks' M.O. is pitching, defense, and small ball....but it is nice to see they have the ability to open it up offensively. Would be nice to see that a bit more often, but we will take what we can get.

Heading down to the game today. Taking my wife and daughter so there will beat least three Hawks in the crowd. Suppose to be a beautiful day. Mid 70's.

Hope the Hawks keep it going today.

Imagine that....Michigan starting Evan Hill who has been injured all year and only got back into some relief roles the last 2-3 weeks. Iowa had all sorts of problems with Hill last year. He is a tall lefty with a funky delivery. Nutof was listed as the probable earlier this week....

Iowa down 2-1 after the 1st thanks to a good play by Eric Toole.

Not a good start from Tyler Peyton though, he threw 30-35 pitches in the 1st inning and gave up a solo HR, double and some free bases. He is having trouble hitting the zone it seems. Hopefully he can get it turned around.

Makes you wonder if the high pitch counts and the short rest for these guys last week is having an impact.

Definitely need Peyton to stay in as long as possible. Our national league lineup means we lose a big bat if he gets pulled too early.

OTOH, he is getting his stuff rocked today. Just make it through the half inning and hopefully get his AB next inning and be done

Yeah, Iowa's starting pitching has struggled. I know Michigan's stadium has a HUGE outfield, but it seems at least today Peyton has not been getting the outside corner of the plate, which has gotten him in trouble and down in the count. I just go back to the Nebraska series and wonder if being shorted a day and having high pitch counts last week are contributing as well.

Iowa down 9-5 now in the 7th, not looking like it's our day. Our guy haven't been able to throw strikes the whole series so far. Really concerned about Sunday as well, REALLY need a solid outing from Calvin Mathews.

Iowa loses 11-5, definitely not a fun day to be a Hawkeye. Our pitching has not been good at all this series so far. For whatever reason we can't throw strikes. Although, I think the strike zone has been VERY inconsistent so far.

Iowa tries to win the series @ noon on Sunday. Hopefully we can get a good outing from Calvin Mathews.

Illinois pretty much has the B1G wrapped up (not officially) but when you look at their games left.

Long ball game. Left when we were tied at 5-5. Killer was the top of 4 when we had bases load with 1 out and didn't score any more runs. We tied it at 5-5 but couldn't take the lead. Great day for a ball game though, 75 degrees.

The game really went south when Mandel came in for Peyton, he was all over the place and never looked comfortable. Ideally he'd have been yanked after a couple of batters. Per the announcers, Iowa's bullpen ERA had been 2.8, so our relief overall has been pretty good.

Mandel has been good in midweek games, not so sure about him against Michigan because of how potent they are offensively. Good news is that we will have Luke Vandermaten and Nick Hibbing available today if needed. Hopefully Calvin has a good outing.

It's a shame this was one of the very few Iowagames that will be televised this year.

But...we've got the rubber match today, so let's hope the boys flushed this one pretty much right after out number three in the ninth yesterday!

Minnesota @ Iowa on Friday night is supposed to be on BTN. That is all for Iowa unless some of our B1G tournament games are on there as well. BTN's baseball coverage sucks and that's a shame. The conference is strong in baseball this year and you'd think they would want to give it exposure. Nope...we have to watch tOSU's spring game 25 times and lacrosse.

Hey, it's pretty clear that more people would want to watch John Hopkins win the Big Ten Lacrosse championship, which is why they didn't show the ninth inning. Wonder what Big Ten Network would have said if Iowa had a 6 run rally in that inning. Hadn't even known that they were a member of the Big Ten conference. But of coiurse Big Ten conference had to see the end of the Penn State/Rutgers game beforehand instead of the start of the game. Not sure I remember another game where a telecast had both the beginning and the end of the game preempted for other broadcasts.

Nick Hibbing threw the final three innings and Iowa wins 2-0!

Iowa only allowed four Michigan hits today! Heck of a game by our pitching today.

Iowa is now 15-3 in the B1G and 33-12 overall.

Assuming Illinois finishes off OSU, that gives us a solid 3 game advantage over 3rd place in the B1G with 6 games to go. Another 4 or 5 wins including the BTT should put us in NCAAs.

Western Illinois and Minnesota this week. Minnesota has been playing well lately despite their record. They have solid pitching that struggled earlier in the year especially that Meyer kid. Western Illinois, definitely do not want to lose that.

Now now now Iowa might lose those games and this is college baseball after all so there's still a very real chance they could miss the postseason. You have to keep that in mind ya know................

2014-2015 could be the first year since I've been alive (1980) where the football, basketball and baseball teams all made the post season in the same year.

I never thought Iowa baseball would field a winning program again in my lifetime. After the Broghamer era, I wasn't sure the program would even survive.

I've been critical of Barta for many things football, basketball, and softball related, but credit where credit is due: the man really hit the ball out of the park with the Heller hire, and that ball would have been out of any park, including Yellowstone.

Iowa needs to win the non-conf games against the directional schools and such. It does nothing for the RPI.
