Rugby 7s - Hawkeyes make USA Rugby College 7s Championships - May 23-24 on ESPN3 & ESPNU

Western Michigan is a high school rugby hot-bed, with Grand Rapids and GR Catholic Central being the epicenter. They have been for a couple decades now, so I'm not surprised at Davenport taking on the sport as a varsity program.

Hawkeyes are in Group D and they are the three seed. Here is Iowa's pool play schedule on Saturday (opponents seed in parenthesis):

(2)Cal Poly @ 11:20 AM
(1)Arizona State @ 2:20 PM
(4)Texas A&M @ 5:40 PM

For those without espn3, go to www.usarugbytv.com to watch them live. If you're not busy on Saturday, check out and emerging rugby program. Fun stuff.

Hawkeyes WIN! Iowa 22, Cal Poly 15.

Next up...
ASU (PAC runner-up to the dynasty of Cal-Berkeley) @ 4:50 Central Time
TX A&M @ 6:40 CT

Sooooo hawks win??............

Finished 2nd in their group (would have won their group had they not lost in the last second to top seed Arizona State). Beat Texas A&M 36-10 in their final group game.

After multiple lightning delays we went on to lose in the quarterfinals to Miami OH and lose in the consolation bracket to Mississippi State (Wiscy lost in the consolation finals to Central Florida).
Lindenwood beat Davenport for the national championship. Not surprisingly two scholarship programs in high school rugby hotbeds.

Breakout year for Iowa rugby, having finished top 20 in the national polls for the first time in 15s and now a top 12 finish at the national tournament in 7s.

Replays are now off espn3 and up on YouTube. 7s matches only last 15 minutes so easy to watch the whole way through. Iowa's upset of Cal Poly in their opener is here from 2:44:00 - 3:02:25. The American color commentator is Paul Emerick, former USA World Cup try scorer from Emmetsburg, IA and UNI rugby.

Second game as we lose to top-seed Arizona State in the last second. Starts at 9:42:15...
