I was at a softball tournament at the Pearl complex today. They announced that sunflower seeds weren't allowed. Why is that?

They're a maintenance nightmare. Regular turf vacuum machines can't suck them up well. I hear there's a new machine available, but it's so expensive it is pretty much only being used in MLB.

I've also heard that players slide on them and get scratched, so it's partly a safety issue.

Some teams have the freshmen pick up seed husks after games. That'll cure you from spitting them out. I'm sure they hate the visiting teams.

How does that apply to us in the stands or standing in the grass at the other grass fields or on the sidewalk. I get the issues on turf fields but the other places don't make sense.

Probably just easier to ban them altogether lest they inevitably make it to the turf field. Either that, or they're communist.
