So for those who may not have known the brief story, Ken O'Keefe was making the rounds in 2017 trying to find another QB for the upcoming class.

3 of the guys it came down to were Matthew Baldwin, Spencer Petras, and Zach Wilson.

Baldwin committed to Ohio State and briefly competed with Justin Fields for the starting job, before bowing out and transferring to TCU. However, injuries over the last year ultimately forced him to step away from football.

Petras, as we know, is Iowa's current signal caller after redshirting the 2018 year and working as a backup for Nate Stanley last year.

Zach Wilson, on the other hand, had originally committed to Boise State before backing out and reopening his recruiting, which is when Iowa stepped in.
However, O'Keefe was able to get a commitment from Petras, and Wilson chose, then, to enroll at BYU and the rest is history........at least for now.

All Wilson has done is be a 3-year starter for BYU and molded himself into an up-and-coming 1st Rd NFL draft prospect.

We know how Petras' start has been, but is it safe to say had Petras not committed to Iowa, or Wilson committed earlier, that Wilson would essentially be in the same spot as Petras right now?

Fwiw, Wilson was 34/54 402 yds 3 TDs 2 INTs with a 1-1 record in his first two starts for BYU.......as a true freshman.

Wilson is a lot of fun to watch. Of course, BYU has played the sisters of the poor this year. He'll finally see a challenge this evening. Should be a great game.

I remember all of that really well, plus we seem to talk about it every week now, so here are a few added notes.

In order, Iowa offered Baldwin, Petras, then Wilson, all in the same week in late November-early December 2017.

At the time, Baldwin was committed to Colorado State, Petras to Oregon State, and Wilson to Boise State.

Baldwin had received the Ohio State offer just prior to Iowa and committed to the Buckeyes a week later without visiting Iowa.

Petras made an official visit to Iowa on 12/10/17 and went home without committing.

Wilson decommitted from Boise State on 12/13/17 and scheduled an official visit to Iowa for 12/15/17.

When news got out to Petras that Iowa was about to have another QB with an offer visit, he called Iowa and committed. Iowa then called Wilson to let him know the spot was filled, so he visited BYU that weekend instead and ended up going there of course.

As a side note, one other QB Ken O'Keefe scouted that fall was Trey Lance, who he watched play in person, but didn't end up offering. Lance, was who was already committed to North Dakota State at the time, went on to have a great career there of course and is now headed to the NFL Draft.

Quarterback recruiting is always fascinating since schools typically are only looking to take one in each class.

Thank you both for adding this. I literally just watched the highlights of him killing Bosie St. and couldn't remember how close we were. I knew he was in the mix with Petras.

Just because they excel at one school doesn’t mean they’ll excel at another. It’s one indicator, but not guaranteed.

Very true but have you seen Wilson? He took some lumps early but he has got a major arm and is pretty accurate. Can move pretty well too.
