‘The View’ Host Sunny Hostin learns she is descended from Slaveowners

Meh. I know with certainty that I have Confederate slave owners in my family tree. I also have Frankish ancestors who likely slaughtered and enslaved pagans, as well as Goth and Hun ancestors who likely slaughtered and enslaved provincial Romans. No big deal.

Oh, when the spanish colonized puerto rico they lived in harmony with the indigenous people there?
Hostin thought her mother’s family was primarily Puerto Rican. It turns out they were primarily Spanish. She doesn’t just have a single incidence of Spanish blood because one of her ancestors raped a slave. Her entire family was Spanish.

She thought her family was the colonized. Turns out they were the colonizers

Unless Norwegians and Germans from Russia owned slaves in their native lands, I should be in the clear. And I’m guessing if they did own slaves, they weren’t African-American.

Dude... the Romans and the Greeks held slaves. Genghis Khan held slaves. And yes, the Germanic tribes that eventually sacked Rome held slaves. Slavery is as old as humanity.

Her 4th great grandfather had a slave. She has 32 4th great grandparents. She's ~1.6% related to someone who owned a slave.
It's interesting, but irrelevant. Most Americans probably have at least that much relation to a slave owner whether they're white black or brown. It's a common finding on the show.
Trying to besmirch her reputation for something nearly all Americans share is just more maga bullshit.

Who gives a shit? Not one single person alive today needs to apologize for the shit that happened pre 1900.

I would venture that we all have slave owners in our family tree, just depends how far back you want to go.
People who emigrated here after the Civil War were not slave owners. Their descendants may have married Americans who were here and who were descended from persons who owned slaves. Per historians at Duke University, in the 15 slave states 3.22% of the population owned slaves.

Yeah, Henry Louis Gates is pretty much a MAGA icon.

I’m not besmirching her name. Nobody has any control over what their ancestors did. I’m correcting your mistake that you made in the process of calling out another poster.

And her 4th great-grandfather didn’t just own a slave. He was apparently a slave trader.

The point here is that she had thought that her mother’s family was Puerto Rican. It turns out they have very little native Puerto Rican heritage. They are predominantly Spanish. Her mother is descended from Spanish colonists in Puerto Rico, one of whom was a slave trader.

I think she’s an absolutely gorgeous woman and while I don’t agree with her political views she shouldn’t be embarrassed because of her heritage. She didn’t get a vote on her ancestry and in fact none of us do.
I love Skip Gates program on PBS, by the way.

Alright fellas. Let's round him up.

A fact she doesn't give a flying fvck about while she's vilifying white people. Divisive race hustlers are among the lowest forms of life and she's in the starting lineup.
I’m thinking she might temper her remarks a bit. She’s a ton smarter than Joyless Reid.

lol, her mother's family IS Puerto Rican.
This comment is like saying "I thought my family was American but my DNA shows I'm Irish!!"

Yeah I get that. I just don’t think it was as common as people think.

No, dumbass, it’s like thinking you’re Native American and finding out your family is actually from Ireland.

In. Her. Own. Words.:

“I didn’t think my family was originally from Spain.”

All this comment shows is that she wasn't aware of the typical ancestry of puerto ricans. It was colonized by spain and all the natives were bred out of existence.

Again, you see this in every episode. "I didn't think I had any German in my family, we're black!"

Thanks for explaining it at a level where even someone like @BelemNole could understand.
