A couple of stories I have never told on this board.

During Sherman's march he came through the area where my family's plantation was located. He stopped and spent the night at the main house. On his way out the next morning, he set fire to the house and fields and stole or killed the livestock. Fortunately, there were potatoes planted so they had food until they were able to rebuild.

Second, in the early 80s, my father and I went up to close the last house on what remained of the plantation after my great aunt passed. She was still using much of the furniture from the 1800s. We found paperwork in a trunk that included original bills of sale for slaves. They were pieces of history.

Her 4th great grandfather had a slave. She has 32 4th great grandparents. She's ~1.6% related to someone who owned a slave.
It's interesting, but irrelevant. Most Americans probably have at least that much relation to a slave owner whether they're white black or brown. It's a common finding on the show.

I think she’s an absolutely gorgeous woman and while I don’t agree with her political views she shouldn’t be embarrassed because of her heritage. She didn’t get a vote on her ancestry and in fact none of us do.
I love Skip Gates program on PBS, by the way.
