After watching the highlights of last night, I understand that we can score points. But we really struggle to play defense and struggle even more on fast break defense. I think we are going about this the wrong way. Say what you will about Lick, but his control the ball and limit possessions offense would likely be better for this team and their lack of athleticism. I wonder if their D sucks because they spend too much energy trying to run on offense. We haven’t been generating the turnovers on defense to really run and get fast break points this year like we did in the Marble/White years under Fran.

I wonder what Bo Ryan could do with this team. There’s a lot of similarity to some of his earlier teams when looking at player capabilities. Unathletic but highly skilled post, good shooters, length. We don’t have very athletic point guard play getting many minutes yet like his teams had and we don’t have players buying in and going hard on defense yet. I never liked his style of coaching but you can’t argue against his success.

You have to recruit to the style of play. Luka Garza type players do not fit a run and gun style. Nor do most of the rest of Iowa’s players. Round peg square hole.

Imagine Ferentz running an air raid with the makeup of his team, elite TEs and all. Just doesn’t fit.

It sounded on the radio like we played an overmatched team but took care of business and played much better than we did the first couple of games. Hard to draw many conclusions about the team other than that. Happy they took care of the ball better and Connor did a good job as the primary ball handler.

I would describe this team as "work in progress". It will evolve during the season. It could be pretty good then or?

The “lack of defense” trope comes down to one thing: JBo can’t guard anyone. Love the kid, he’s a gunner with no conscience and a sweet shot, he’s still not 100% but he’s a massive defensive liability against quick guards when he’s in the game. That run by ORU was basically JBo being blown by those two quick guards. And I suppose I can blame Garza as well for not defending the rim when they do penetrate.

Geeze I thought we won and Garza had 30. Must of dreamed that.

Garza is highly skilled offensively and relentless, but his lack of athleticism is going to limit his game vs high end competition.

Bo Ryan would do a lot more win wise with this current set of athletes than Fran because Bo was hall of fame coach and Fran is a guy that got ran out of multiple programs after around 6 years. The guys Ryan recruited and the culture he instilled led to smarter/tougher minded athletes and they tended to have more skill and there weren't defensive weak links like Garza/JayBo.

I have never heard that before??

My point is that we can get away with outscoring Oral Roberts in a shootout. We won't be able to get away with trying to outscore many Big Ten teams that way. But I honestly think a ground and pound ball control style offense/defense could work wonders with this team as it is constructed. We should be burning 25 seconds off the clock every non-fast break possession.

I don't think we can just pivot to a different style of play in the middle of the season when we've practiced that way for years. Although, the 1970 team pivoted their style of play after they started 3-4. They switched to their high-scoring offense and didn't lose again until the Jacksonville St. game. But that team had a significantly higher amount of talent than the current roster. I wouldn't be surprised if they could beat the current team straight up in a game, especially with modern rules like a shot clock and the 3pt line.

The run happened with JBo and Conner getting blown by while our two best defenders were on the bench. Joey and CJ are clearly our best defenders and need to be in the game as mush as possible especially if Jordan is in. You cant play Jordan and Conner together that is death on defense.

I can't stand watching that slow down, limited possession type ball. But the make up of this relatively slow footed team is more suited to that type of play.

Wait...what?????

My current worry is leadership. When JBo is in the game he is the clear leader & calms things down on the offensive end. On the defensive end, not so much.
When JBo isn’t in the game at all, I see kids playing hard, but no leader. This team hasn’t found itself (yet).

Another reason why playing Jordan at all might be problematic.

You are entitled to your own opinion, but you can not make up your own facts. My advice is for you to move to Madison because you have cheese balls. It is a given that Bo had a lot of success at Wisconsin, but your words are cheap, hollow and unsubstantiated. Please provide some substantiation regarding the multiple programs that ran Fran off.

People hammer Wisconsin for playing slow down ball, but after seeing them play Marquette today, they are far from boring. I thought they would come back to the pack without Haap, but their younger / bench guys appear to have really developed. Davison and Trice are a formidable duo and get into guys defensively. They played some pretty tenacious man on defense on were crisp on offense with lots of ball movement and guys knocking down shots.

Really makes me question Fran and his staff in multiple areas as WI is not loaded with blue chip recruits. Their player development seems much more consistent than Fran's and they get after people defensively with what appears to be similar caliber athletes for the most part.

I also love watching a team get up and down the floor, but Iowa doesn't have the talent to play this style and win.

You're obviously not a Hawkeye fan so go root for Wisconsin then
