I hadn’t heard about this:

In college baseball, a green base at first base is part of the double first base rule, which is used to reduce collisions between runners and first basemen.

How it works

  • A second base, colored green or orange, is placed next to the normal first base in foul territory.
  • Batters use the colored base while defenders use the white base.
  • The green base is only used for the path from home plate to first base.

  • Once a batter reaches first base, they use only the white base.

Lulu was saying on the radio it is also because first is in fair territory, runners have to run down the line and college umps were calling a lot of runners out for even being slightly off the line. I think it’s more for the collision, but this makes some sense.

I noticed it at the outset, but didn’t know what it was about.
We had a put out at first after a dropped third strike and the 1st baseman made the out using the green bag (which seems to contradict the rule as I quoted it).

Big crowd, even considering it was opening night.
Was more like Regionals.

I missed the opener tonight. Son had a scrimmage game, so I was at a baseball field, just not Mike Martin Field. Hope to make it tomorrow.

Good news is my boy went 2-3 and reached base 3 times with two singles and an HBP, 2 RBIs and a scoreless inning on the mound. I love football season, but spring is my favorite time of the year.
