11/22 Rankings

157 @ 9 is generous.
This.

Young is by far and away the most "non-Iowa" wrestler I've ever seen as a regular starter. Does not fit the Brands style of wrestling whatsoever. He's almost scared to score points.

How many repeats have we seen of his matches that are 2-3 going into the 3rd with the other guy having riding time and he never takes a single shot?

Perfect example is the NCAA consi match against Brayton Lee. It was Kaleb Young doing Kaleb Young things again. Tied 2-2 in the 2nd and he doesn't take a single shot, strictly hand-fighting, even when he knows to start the 3rd he's likely going to give up an escape. Then in the 3rd he's so completely gassed that he takes 5 half-hearted shots that were obviously going nowhere. Lee just held him off with a stiff arm and Young gets frustrated and loses. Same thing last Friday; Monday was a guy willing to keep the action going and Young wouldn't answer back until it's too late and he gets clowned. How he got where he is with his hesitancy to score points is beyond me. Looking at his record isn't telling the whole story...he doesn't win the ones that count which is one thing, but not being an offensive wrestler is inexcusable at this level.

He was #6 and lost a 4 point decision to the guy who was ranked #7. Where should he be ranked?
He should be ranked outside the top 10 and perhaps lower. Not taking a good quality shot in the first 5 minutes when wrestling for the first time in front of your home crowd in over a year, not a good look. Didn't look like he had energy, his feet looked slower than ever before and when he needed something in the 3rd, he didn't push the pace.

He was wrestling a similarly ranked wrestler, but they looked miles apart.

Every year Young looks rough during the regular season and every year he manages to all American. How are you clowns still talking about him?

The kid has a monster cut, truly has no business being a 157, yet he makes the sacrifice every year. And gets the job done when it matters every year. Good grief.

That is true but he was not in that match. It may have been a 4 point decision but it was pretty decisive.
Yeah it was. Sometimes Kaleb is a great scrambler, it just makes you wonder why he doesn't initiate more activity and try to use that part of his arsenal. He's tough as nails most of the time otherwise, but he didn't look good last Friday.

I disagree. He placed 7th last year and lost to another top ten guy this weekend. If he drops this match to a no name or low ranked wrestler then yes.

I get the frustration with the lack of offense but the current ranking seems correct.

I get this. In the context of how rankings are done, you are spot on and for now, this is the correct ranking, but watching this match, KY did not look like a top 10 guy. Just my opinion, but he was taken down too easily with little resistance and showed no offense, and at times, no desire to initiate an offense.

Wasn’t Kaleb a AA at 174??? You try making that cut at his age and see how competitive you are out of the gate or in a 3 day tournament. I get it yes it’s frustrating and we want more that’s what being a Hawk wrestling fan is about. With that being said he is a warrior for what he does for the team. He is our best option at 157 so maybe instead of bashing him all the time maybe realize man he goes through Hell to get to 157 and hope for the best for him.

No. Two time AA at 57.

Why? He’s played that part for almost three years. Nothing different this year. I personally don’t understand the mis thoughts on marinelli this year so far!!!
Everyone forgets he got injured against Griffith in the quarters and MFF'd out. On FRL they tried to claim he lost to Cam Amine:rolleyes:

He allowed Princeton half their team's TDs, and was also reversed. 8 offensive points to zero.

For Young, that's a pretty dominant loss. Well, for anyone ranked right next to a guy, it's a dominant loss.

Having said that, I believe he will rebound. He always does.

And he’s a three time aa. He’s fine!!

To question KY’s desire is nutty. The dude sacrifices a ton for us. He is a 174 pounder making the cut to 157 because it’s where he’s needed. Yes. He has struggles with weight and can come out flat because of the suck, but that dude gives everything he has. Sadly come match time he doesn’t have a ton to give some times (especially early in the year). I would wager he ends on the podium once again.

Yep. Plus, the talk here is mere ranking. For a loss like that he should go down quite a bit. Beat some higher ranks and he will go up.
The thing is as we have seen recently. Lots of high ranked kids have been knocked off. To me cass as an example is laughable to be at 5. He beat Schultz twice at ncaas. And to put kerk in front of him is laughable too. Didn’t he major him or close too it. Them results won’t change. Might get close but I don’t see it. One bad match by him is end of the world to the wrestling community and Iowa fans know better or at least should!!!! Young too. Some matchups just don’t favor him. When ncaas come around it favors young!!!

he is absolutely not a 174. he tried that but couldn’t keep the size on. he’s a natural 165.

I'm sure I wouldn't question his desire to do a lot of things, but I can quantify his desire to initiate offense, which is what I said, by the number of offensive shots or legit shot attempts he might make in the first 7 mins of a match. But I now understand, he cuts a ton of weight and is doing that for the team, so no one should come on HR and accurately describe his matches because excuses are not just for wusses, they're also for posters on HR that can't handle an honest assessment.

Yeah on paper for sure this is a good point but it wasn’t even close as I’m sure you watched. Maybe a bad match up, young can be frustrating at times to watch.

He will place higher then his counter part at ncaas like he always has!!! Monday can’t seem to get past the 1st or 2nd rd!!

So, why didn’t we recruit a natural 157 if he’s just been taking one for the team all of these years?

O'Toole has a very legit argument for #1. He placed higher last year than Marinelli ever has and only has 1 career loss. Also had better wins last year (mostly because Marinelli hardly wrestled anybody because the big ten was weak and he got hurt at NCAA's). I would probably rank O'Toole #1, but don't think there's a wrong answer.

the knock on Young is his lack of offense at times but NEVER question his desire to contribute to the team. he is a quiet leader and his stoic attitude should not be mistaken for not wanting to mix it up....he is an excellent scrambler but i think he does need to initiate more action as to find himself in more scrambles and find himself in more scoring situations. YES his weight cut is BRUTAL but he does it without complaint and he makes it week in and week out.... he is the type of guy who is more of the cement and not the block in the wall...he helps keep the team together and is always a solid contributor that can be counted on and when its Tournament time he will grind his way into AA status again and rack up those needed points for the hawks.

I don't think its that crazy to consider Monday on the middle mats on Friday night in March with one heck of a fight to make it to Saturday night. Kaleb Young is a BAMF in my opinion. He was bigger than the Bull and has wrestled a weight below for the TEAM! I love the guy, well spoken and blue collar guy that makes everyone around him better in the program IMO. As a coach I love that kind of athlete.
