12 team playoff and bowl games

I think that people are underestimating the prestige that comes with a “bowl championship” season.
Who wants to lose in the playoff when you could put a Little Ceaser‘s Pizza Pizza Bowl trophy in the case.

Just don't see the bowl games - outside of the Playoffs - surviving and drawing decent TV audiences down the road. I watched the OSU and PSU bowl games and you could tell that those schools really didn't care about those games. Both teams had several opt outs

Love the fact Notre Dame can't get a bye. Doesn't sound like they would be able to in an upcoming 14 team CFP in 2026 and after either.

Tennessee was a much more talented team than Iowa. Iowa had several key players out but Tennessee had a large amount of their defense and offensive key players out as well. Top to bottom, the talent disparity was obvious.
Now that just cannot be true. KF is responsible for recruiting and we all know he's the greatest ever. No way Tennessee had better talent. Iowa just had an off day, much like vs Michigan and Penn State (93-0, but not KF's fault in any way).

We didn't have an $8 million QB.

Link to that QB making $8 million?
No one will acknowledge whether Iamaleava is the player who is the subject of the marketing deal that The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel detailed last month. That deal will pay its subject as much as $8 million in exchange for the collective marketing revenue made off the player’s NIL rights for the next four years. Iamaleava’s father Nick offered a quick “no comment” when asked about the deal Saturday. But within 10 days of the deal being signed, Iamaleava committed to Tennessee. Knoxville-based marketing agency Spyre Sports is the group dealing with the most current Tennessee players, and appears to be on the cutting edge of NIL deals compared to most of its competitors.

Well, if you can’t beat em, join em

So conference champions are punished by not getting to host a playoff game.
I’ve thought about this, too. I would not be surprised if a situation came up in which a team locked into a #8 seed or better basically throws a game rivalry week, so instead of playing for a bye, chooses instead to stay home and rest during CCG weekend and then host a playoff game.

The players opting out will be what ultimately kills it. Fans would still like to watch the games, but not if key players aren't involved.

That said, if the TV ratings still make it a good advertising value for sponsors, you never know. But the frequency with which those change seems to be an indication that that's fading as well.

Perhaps an NIT-like version of a secondary tourney will happen. For example a B1G/SEC challenge weekend. 2-3 games in one day at a central location.
