Do we know who will be competing for the 149 starting spot for the Hawkeyes this year? VV and Rathjen are known to be competing for the starting spot. Will Cobe be coming down from 157? Will Ant Ferrari be making the move to 149 second semester? Discuss.

Cobe can’t way less than 154 this year after certification.

He probably has to make the cut to 149 to make the varsity squad. I don't seem him beating Franek. I'm very interested to see the jumps that Franek and Caliendo make in the Iowa room.
I hope they make “jumps” in the Iowa room, but it’s not a guarantee as Woods and Eierman didn’t appear to improve significantly after they transferred.

Assuming Cobe is able to come down, based on accomplishments in college wrestling, here's the pre-season pecking order:

Cobe
Voinovich
Rathjen

Razor close on the 2nd two. Could easily end up the other way around.

That's about right. Who knows, the wrestle offs are going to be fun. Whoever it is, may not be a National Champ but can definitely AA.

And tell me how you figured this out? How do you know his exact weight from certs ? The 174 on track just means he was over 165 so could've been 165.1 which would mean he could be at 149 8 weeks from when he certed

Just what I was told, I was not present at certification.

Would obviously need to know body fat too when on he stepped on the scale at certs…

By my calcs he’d have to have been 14.3%+ body fat at 165.1 to be allowed to wrestle 149.

If he was over 165 at certs with his body type I'm not sure he will see 149 again no way he has that much fat

I think one of potential 49lbers will elevate and take the position clearly and I believe it will be VV. Time will tell but I think he could be an AA this season
If he learns to finish once he's on the leg. That's VV biggest issue I see. He can get to legs but finishing isn't his strong point. Rathjen is very athletic as well which will help him

I’ve always thought Rathjen had a high ceiling. He was a multi sport athlete in high school. Those kind of athletes tend to make jumps once they focus on one sport. Of course in order for that jump to occur they need to be dedicated to that sport and not do things that hurt their ability to get better. Hopefully he figures it out, if he does. My money would be on him.

We need more athletes in our lineup. The lack of athletes is a glaring difference between our line up and the line up of those who should not be named.

Agree on all of that.

I thought Cobe was suspended the entire season?

You don't typically see late career transfers make "jumps" in other rooms. In fact, they often regress. Look at Lamont for Wisconsin last year. I would expect Franek to be the same guy he was last year (hopefully). 6 years in college wrestling is an eternity.

Caliendo? Maybe. He's still young enough to keep improving, but I'm not sure it will be different than if he stayed at NDSU.

I agree A guy probably is not going to end up changing his style a whole lot at that point. I would think at most he might add a variation on a move he hits already. I think a much more likely change is probably going to be in energy levels or strength from a new nutrition and strength and conditioning program or just a change in scenery leading to a better outlook on life.

VV was also a lethal leg rider and top wrestling tactician in high school. I think he has put a lot of effort into improving his neutral game and his focus has been there since going to OKSt. Hopefully, with improvements in his neutral game, he will also be able to return to punishing people from the top position.
