Robb, Saidate & Haines have undefeated Big Ten dual seasons.
#1 Robb hasn’t lost this year.
# 2 Haines winning out 21-1
# 3 Saldate 22-4 winning out
#4 & #5 Cobra & Coleman
# 6 Lewan
# 7 & up Chumbley, Carr, Model, Gallagher maybe this order.
Carr Illinois is 3-0 beat Cobe. Where does he fit in the mix? Does he slide in at #5 pushing COBE to #6?
Matches that didn’t happen which perhaps could have.
Cobe vs. Coleman
Haines vs. Saldate
Robb vs. Coleman #2 Robb had beat him.
Haines best win is COBE.
Saldate, Coleman & COBE best win is Lewan.
It will be a great bracket.

Carl the strategist did not wrestle Haines against #3 Humphires or Saldate. No chance in risking the 2 seed.
I’d be just fine with COBE having the 6 seed.

PSU wrestled Lehigh in early December and MSU was between huge matches against michigan and Iowa. Your comments would hold a lot more weight if they wrestled those matches this weekend instead of when they fell on the schedule. Plus it wasn't even 100% certain Haines would be their guy going forward.

A lot of hand-wringing over a guy that many Iowa fans are disregarding. I'm already on record as saying Haines is the best of their young group including Van Ness and Facundo.

Oh, and Cael is a helluva strategist. He's usually playing 4D Chess in March while we're playing broken checkers.

The wrangling was if Cael was going to pull the shirt, yes? Kind of like Spencer.
I'm not discounting Haines, I don't think he has the horses to win the NC this year as a true freshman.

Again, the December dual is moot. They may have had an idea on Dec 4 they might turn to Haines but nothing was set, so they saved his matches for later.

What's more important, wrestling against MSU or wrestling against Iowa?

And I agree, he's probably not going to win it this year, he's an AA contender, but he will be in the title hunt next year.

I am just not sure he deserves the two seed. He is the least tested of the top 6 guys at 57. If he wins the Big Ten tournament, I’ll think differently.

Agreed. He may be a three timer. I just don't think he's getting it done this year.

Unless Haines flat out said he wanted to wrestle why pull the redshirt? PSU certainly doesn't need him to win it this year.

We are hoping for the 6. Robb is the 1 guy I don’t think he can beat unless he catches him.
I’m still worried about Carr. Carr hadn’t wrestled in some time and was up at 157 for the first time I can recall and handled Cobe pretty easily. I thought for sure he was going gas out and didn’t. Assuming he’s healthy, I think he’s a vet with a last chance at the podium and is going to be a tough out. Cobe matches up well vs Coleman and Saldate IMHO. I think the top 4 (finishes not seeds)at B10s shakes out.

1. Robb
2. Carr
3. Haines
4. Cobe

Carr was holding on vs ISU yesterday. I think Cobe was clearly feeling less than his best for that match.

I expect it to be a lot more competitive if it happens again, but I also think Carr is a tough stylistic match up. Very quick and clean finisher. Gave Eierman a lot of problems for the same reason.

Cael seems certain Levi will be moving to 165 next season or the one after. If that's the case, which i believe it is, Levi could very well have to sit on the bench with Facundo there. Or if Levi beats him out, then Facundo sits a year so not a "way different situation". In fact, I see it as the same situation in that eventually Levi or another stud wastes a year on the bench. And also the way I see it, for the team it's best if Levi can redshirt in a year or two to give Facundo time to either let Starocci clear out or move up himself for 5th year if he decides to take it. Facundo to 174.... so they are both in the lineup and neither sits a year. Levi saving the shirt is a no brainer imo
The difference is you are guessing. All those things are a maybe. In the case of Ayala, it was crystal clear. Lee couldn't go and needed surgery. So, it was clear the spot was Ayala's this year with Lee coming back next year.

Meanwhile, your scenario doesn't save anything for Haines. If he does in fact eventually go up to 165, there will be a logjam for multiple years of his career, regardless of if he redshirts this year or not. On top of that, you guys are so high on him that it would be the OTHER guys having to sit if he goes up. So, basically he is wrestling now with by far his least likely chance at an NCAA title, while(atleast the way most PSU fans talk) he should be a VERY strong title contender the next 4 years after.

As a non PSU fan I am sure most are happy to see him using up a year of eligibility this season, especially if he turns out to be as good as his mom kept touting him over on thematforums...

I know Carr has been dealing with a lot of injuries, which likely explains him having just 4 matches on the season. Wrestling at B10s is rough when you’re not healthy. B10s is loaded with mid level talent at 157. Could see him as well as others simply try to qualify for the national tournament and forfeit the rest

I wouldn't be surprised to see Haines rs next year and pack on some size and go 174 the following year.

Regardless we will see Facundo/Haines being 165/174 after Starocci is gone.

The days of automatically redshirting are over for freshman. With the new 4 match rule for true freshman (which I really like) you can test the waters to see if you think a kid is ready without burning his shirt. Also pushes the current guy. Win for everyone I feel and kids are far more D1 ready out of hs now as well.

I'll trust Caels plan over yours Pyl...err... I mean MSU. Book mark this post and in a few years you and I can revisit. I'll bet you neither Haines nor Facundo sits on the bench a year despite your perceived "logjam". And It'll be because Haines preserved his his shirt this year.

Now if your problem with Haines is him having a better shot at being a 4 timer, I can get down with that. My only beef with that is if you have a kid that wants to wrestle, is best at his weight on the team, is becoming a legit AA threat or maybe even more, then why as a coach do you withhold him from wrestling? So he be a 4 timer for your school? Really? One other thing, they have Sealy coming in in the next couple years. Clearing kids out quickly could help teamwise. I'm hoping Sealy can be a 157 for a couple years. If he can't, Levi wrapping things up would help get him on the mat quicker.
I have no issue with "the plan", or who made it. Hell, I only responded when you compared it to Ayala. To me, that comparison was about as close as comparing Sandusky to Gable. ;)

Like I said, from a non PSU fan point of view, I am quite content with Haines using up a year now, when he is very visibly showing he still has quite a bit of room for development.

Oh, and thanks Tba....err.... I mean johnstown...

I hear a lot of PSU fans saying Levi is not long for 157- please link Carl saying the same. I have rarely heard Carl showing his hand on virtually anything.

Starocci has eligibility through 24-25 if he wants it, so Levi going this year isn't going to unstack anything at 165/174 for 24-25 unless one of Facundo, Haines or Starocci goes up to 184. Maybe so, but that's a lot of "growth knowledge" 2 years out.
