Hayden Fry, legendary Iowa football coach, dies at 90. Hayden Fry, who built up Iowa's football program over two memorable decades, died on Tuesday at the age of 90. His family wrote in a statement that his death came after an extended bout of cancer.

Plenty of what if moments and other moments that one can reflect on.

For me, 1981 when he hired an Iowan today as his OL coach entering his third season in Iowa City. Hayden found some outstanding coaching talent, especially in his first decade at the helm.

There were a lot of What ifs?

Some went Iowa's way and many went the other direction. Our version of the entry to ABC's Wide World of Sports.

He didn't win the Big one, but he took nineteen years of mediocre football (1962 to 1980) and sent a State of Iowa to the Rose Bowl in 1981.

RIP Hayden. You served well.
