Add that Evy coached a total of 9 seasons @ Iowa. Winning record every year but the 1st (1952) and 4th (1955). '55 record of 3-5-1 with the 5 losses ALL being to rated teams #17 and higher. Four of the last 5 seasons, Evy ONLY lost 1 game each year except his next to last ('59).
EVERY one of Evy's teams were rated at some point #12 or higher except his first team in '52. 7 of those 8 were rated #9 or higher and 6 of those were #5 or higher w/ the LAST 5 seasons were rated #3, #3, #2, #5 and #1 at some point. Even Jerry Burns' first squad in '61 was #1 Pre-season.
Evy's teams played Notre Dame EACH season. Lost the 1st year to #3 ND. Iowa (#20) tied #1 ND in Evy's 2nd year! and knocked the Irish from the Nat'l Championship podium. (They ended #2). Iowa (#19) lost again to #4 ND in '54 and in '55 when ND was also #4. Iowa then goes 4-1 in Evy's last 5 years vs the Irish with the only loss a 20-19 game in '59.
I love JH Fry and what he did for Iowa. Bringing the air game to the 3 yds and dust Big10. Amazing!
Then there's this.... Iowa was coming off a string of 5 straight losing seasons, 8 losing yrs in 9, 10 out of 12, 15 of the previous 21. (Similar to Fry?). In Evy's 2nd year, he has Iowa rated in the top 20 and they take down #1 ND @ South Bend and end up rated #9 in the final rankings. From then on, Iowa achieves a ranking of, at least #5 every year except '55!!! Evy produced continued success UNSEEN by Iowa since the turn of the century. ( Coaches: Knipe '99-'02 - 77% wins, Chalmers, '03-'05 - 75%, Jones '16-'23 71% wins. And of course, the lone Ironmen year w/ Kinnick). Fry's success was amazing, but Evy's was monumental. Evy won 65% of his games w/ FEW cupcakes. Fry w/61% and Ferentz is currently @ 62% and they both scheduled several "easy" ones.
Also during Evy's 9 seasons, Iowa's only Non-P2 games were Wyoming in '53, Montana '54, Hawaii '56, Utah State '57 and Air Force in '58 and the Falcons ended the year #6 in AP. Not to mention the games every year w/ the Irish. This was done during the time period when the blue bloods were establishing their pedigrees. Iowa was right there with them and then..... Idk what the politics were at that time, but it's a d*mn shame people didn't know what they had cookin' in Iowa City.
