Fran's teams have a good history of seeing at least one senior really step up in a big way down the stretch. Who will it be this year?
Clemmons does what Mike does (run the offense, play good D, score very little more often than not).....except he doesn't turn the ball over at goofy times (down the stretch), force shots up against bigs inside and get blocked or just flat out misses, and is a better defensive player than Mike. All four of them.
100% with you on MG, MG cannot shoot a jump shot and misses way too many FT's.Clemmons does what Mike does (run the offense, play good D, score very little more often than not).....except he doesn't turn the ball over at goofy times (down the stretch), force shots up against bigs inside and get blocked or just flat out misses, and is a better defensive player than Mike.
So yeah.......Tyler Ullis can transfer to Iowa any day now.

They both need to make teams pay for leaving them open on the perimeter.Sapp is a gamer. He fights. MG has all of that in him but for some reason right now he's choking. He can't pull the trigger.
MG looks like a guy who's suffering from paralysis from analysis. He's a great player. Quit thinking and let it flow. I assume Fran has a sports psychologist. I'd pay him overtime to work with MG. I love the kid but he's really frustrating to watch. I'm really pulling for him.

The problem is we are playing two point guards, neither with much offense. If you are playing Iowa, you can dare AC and MG to shoot with very limited risk of them making you pay. The remaining teams on our schedule are going to have defenders inside the jerseys of Jok and Uthoff. If the answer is for these guys to step back and take deeper 3's, we won't finish the season on a good note.
MG 3rd in B1G in assists at 6.2
2nd in assist/turnover ratio at 3.2
just sayin

Yes, takes care of the ball and passes it to Uthoff/Jok. The problem is team's don't have to worry about his jump shot or dribble drives or putting him at FT line. Earlier in season Gesell was having a career year shooting the ball, but last 8-10 games he is shooting poorly.
Mike makes too many late game mistakes. His multiple brain cramps late against Indiana killed any chance that Iowa had at making a run against the Hoosiers.Sapp is a gamer. He fights. MG has all of that in him but for some reason right now he's choking. He can't pull the trigger.

Yes, but he needs to be wide open. His takes forever to release his shot. He also is gunshy about pulling the trigger.Disagree AC can hit the open shot
It's the same problem I've been pointing out for a couple years and people don't want to admit it. MG and AC, are at best avg guards. You need at least one or both to be above avg. Either one would be fine starting IF you had another player playing with them who was above avg or better. It's why I said, you put Ulis on this team and it's a possible final four team. I can live with MG or AC at the SG with Ulis running the point. But with AC and MG starting you have 2 guys who aren't offensive players. Neither one is a good shooter. Gesell has a decent mid range game but he's not quick enough to get many opportunities. Neither is a good outside shooter and AC takes a day and a half to get his shot off.Ya'll are losing your minds. In conference games specifically:
Gesell has been a better free throw shooter. They both chucks 3's at the same horrible percentage (though Clemmons chucks more of them). Both average 9 points/pg. Gesell gets more boards and same steals for both.
There is a lot of mental bias against Gesell because he's done some stupid shit late in games and has the ball in his hands more often than Clemmons.
Teams are starting to adjust to this as well. Starting with Indiana I noticed how they started to defend mostly Gesell but Clemmons as well. Penn State was not guarding Gesell and they where begging him to shoot from anywhere. I'm really hoping it's just mental fatigue but I fear that there's now a blueprint on how to defend Iowa. Jok and Uthoff are so good Iowa's still going to score the ball but will it be enough by itself. I'm hoping Fran has some answers from what I've seen as to how people are now defending Iowa. I'm not to sure how much longer he can get away with playing Gesell and Clemmons together. I don't mind either as our pg but playing them together, I'm just not sure about as we move forward. It's the same problem I've been pointing out for a couple years and people don't want to admit it. Fran is playing the best players. Many of us said at the beginning of the season that guards were the weak spot of the starting lineup. It's not that they are terrible, they are avg, but when your big scorers don't have their shooting touch or are being well guarded, it would be nice for the guards to step up and shoulder some of the offensive burden and AC and don't do this. The two weakest starters for Iowa are MG and AC.
The problem is Fran has no good guard options on the bench. He's stuck with trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. This was my biggest complaint about Fran's recruiting the last 2-3 years, but the sally sunshiners didn't want to see it. Williams can't be ready or good enough, or Fran would be playing him more in games, especially when they were blowing out teams. Ellingson just isn't good enough. If he's not making 3 pointers he's a liability on the floor because he can't take anyone off the dribble, and he's brutal defensively. Fran recruited a lot of wings, but not guards who can handle the ball, or beat someone off the dribble, or are great shooters from beyond the arc. Maybe he'll have those players next year or the following year, but a huge opportunity will have been lost with a talented group of seniors this year.Teams are starting to adjust to this as well.
