B10 "at large" invite

Team MVP - Jok, 1st Team B10
Most Improved - Williams/Ellingson
Freshman - Cook, All-B10 Frosh

I think they're probably looking at a year similar to Gesell/Woody's freshmen year.

Probably 18-13 or so with some head scratching wins and head scratching losses. I still think it's an NIT team UNLESS they have a strong showing in the BTT and/or enter the BTT on a hot streak. Whether they say it or not, the committee adjusts for end of the season performance.

I'd be happy with whatever record as long as they improve all the way through the end of the season unlike 2 of the last 3 seasons.

I almost agree with ISUBryce.

8-4 noncon
11-7 B1G
1-1 BTT
20-12, NCAA Seven Seed...1-1 in the Dance.

I also think that's on the high end as previously I've figured anywhere from 12-6 down to 7-11 is possible depending on how quick the team develops.

"After watching the dumpster fire that is Hawkeye football, the record doesn't matter as long as we play an exciting brand of bball....."

You will be among a bathroom stall size population of Iowa fans once January/February, 2017, arrives. The '15-16 Hawkeye squad could be more entertaining than the '72 Globetrotters but if they are at or near the bottom of the B10, the groundswell of discontent will be overwhelming. With the possible exception of T-ball, as long as they play games and keep records, the team's W-L record will always dwarf any other aspect of any team's performance.

The same principle applies no matter the style of play. A perfect example is the 2015 Iowa football team. Iowa plays a more conservative pro-style power run offense with very little variation and virtually no trick plays. Many fans consider this style of play boring. Yet they finished the regular season 12-0 and nobody was complaining about what style of play made them undefeated. Not surprisingly, the Hawks are playing the same "bland" offensive scheme this year but a large segment of fans are furious because they have lost 3 of their first 8 games. It wasn't the style of play that angered the fans, it was the losses.

The records do matter - at the college and pro level it is the beginning and the end of evaluating any team or coach. Even if Iowa is playing a fast paced run-and-gun style offense, I doubt that you will be back here to shower praise on Fran McCaffery if after losing to Ohio State on February 5th, Iowa's record falls to 6-19.

The bball team this year is a complete unknown and extremely young. If Fran plays guys, even tho they are not getting the job done versus someone else (Ellingson over Moss/Dailey), then yes, I will not be happy. This year's squad is a work in progress and youth needs to be served as much as possible for the future good of the team/program, imo. To me, Uhl needs to finally show that he can/will perform and play hard every game and Ellingson needs to demonstrate that he actually belongs at this level (no longer a liability on the court) after 2 full years in the program (he is no rookie). The rest of the guys hopefully will continually get better at becoming a cohesive unit on both ends of the court over the course of the season. The size, skills and athleticism are already apparent with most of the players which is exciting for the future of the program.

17 to 18 wins and nit.

Winning is the bottom line, but the entertainment provided based on style of play is definitely important to me.
Even though I think this is a year they take a step back, I think they can still play some games that will be fun to watch despite resulting in losses. An 85-80 loss will hold my attention. 52-47 and I'm probably flipping through channels to find something else most of the game.

I think the assumption is that, while there are unknowns, this team will be competitive in the Big Ten. Obviously, if Iowa is at the bottom of the conference, then it doesn't matter how many dunks the team is throwing down. However, based on what's returning and the talent we have coming in, it's pretty safe to assume that the floor for this team is probably only a few games below .500 in the Big Ten, which is likely still good enough for the NIT, depending on the non-con.

If the football team was undefeated, but the offense is playing like they are now (I realize that this combination is likely impossible), then, while all would be happy about the record, most objective fans would realize that our anemic-looking offense isn't sustainable against teams like Michigan/whoever we would face in the BTCG/Bowl game, thus tempering enthusiasm.

I completely understand, and even agree, with your point that record is the over-arching determinant of fan (dis)content. If two teams are going to be average though, I'll watch the one that puts an entertaining product on the field/court.

I'm thinking 18 to 20 wins and will take a NIT title or a NCAA play in team. Either one is fine by me. With that said, I'm hoping that we will be able to close out games by going to the Free Throw line to win it. Jok/Bohannon/Baer will make free throws to cap off some wins for us which has not happened in the past. Go Hawks!!

It would be a strange year if a B1G team gets 21-24 wins and only gets an NIT invite.

So that aside I would say the odds are:

1) 25 + wins & Sweet Sixteen 4%
2) 21-24 wins & NCCA Tourney 25%
3)18-20 wins & NIT invite 45%
4) 16-18 wins & No postseason 25%
5) Less than 16 wins 1%

With our schedule 19 wins will probably get us in play in game, 20 or more wins NCAA bid without a doubt...Non conference- Virginia, UNI, ISU, ND... not to mention 25 win seton Hall. That is 5 damn good programs. Not to mention playing in the best conference with games against MSU, Indiana, Wisconsin, Purdue, Maryland, etc

8-4 non conf

20-13 NCAA Tournament

I think this group wins some games, but also loses some games they should win. I bet we see them upset 1-2 top 15 teams, but also lose to some bottom feeder on the road. Gonna be an up and down year.

18-20 wins and NIT. The young front court players will be fun to watch. If we have an injury to one of our few players that can handle the point, it could turn ugly.

Should help a lot with the record that the Hawks play 3 of the top four teams in the B1G only once. Awful lot of uncertainty in how the Hawks will come together with so much inexperience, but I have a lot of confidence in the coaching staff. I see 9-3 or 8-4 pre-B1G and about 10-8 (plus or minus 2) in conference and 1 win in the BTT. So, I'll go with 20-12 and squeaking into the dance.

B1G schedule is a bit weaker than it has been in other years. With how difficult the noncon is this year (just FYI, UND and UNO finished in the top 200 so they're not slouches either), we will probably know by January if we have a legitimate shot at the NCAA or not.

Only 9 days til the sorta season starts.

I was listening to the guys from Hawk Central talk earlier.......the one guy said he didn't think this team would take a huge step back from last year and that this should be an NCAA team. I hope he is correct but that is not where I would put my money.

This will be a fun team and the future is really bright. Fran is a breath of fresh air compared to Ferentz.

Perry....I am with the one guy on Hawk Central and a few other folks in this thread plus, I have a lot of faith in Fran. See below and 25 wins in his third year with the program when I remember on this very board where the majority of fans said it would take 5 years to get to 15 to 20 wins and a sniff of the NCAA tourney after Lick's mess.

Yes this team is a bit inexperienced but to have a player like Peter, an outside shooter/ft shooter/16 ppg scorer returning like Peter to build the team around is huge imo. And when Peter misses a shot, it's not by much. Other players can settle their shots down around Pete and gain confidence with their play and shooting .....shooting's contagious for most good shooters and we have them on this team.

Plus Pete's defense has gotten much better and made plays with a lot of hustle steals and just missed creating a TO on many more ops. This will continue to get better for Pete.

#2 Cook is that good......as Pemsl has said, he has added an outside shot to his play since he's arrived on campus....that quickly btw.... what a talent which I saw in PTL and didn't expect this outside shooting beyond the 3 line this early on with Tyler which really encourages my view even more.

If his outside shot drops....om goodness for opponents. He already can get the rim in a huge way but if his BIG defender has to now match up and step out on him to respect that 3 shot.....advantage Tyler.

#3 Baer is that good like the Nova game....really impressed with his play in PTL He's got game, it's gotten better....no question. He makes shots, hustles and makes plays on either end or on the boards when it doesn't look like there is a play to make.....

#4 - PG play will be an unknown early on but I see the talent in both CW and Bohannon handling the ball....the different skills they bring. CW is BIG for a PG and very talented....Fran has talked about CW defensively. The PG play may get sideways in some games...it does for a lot teams with young PGs but the upside is big and match ups will be very interesting on the perimeter?

#5 - All the rest....just a very talented mix of BB players with a particular set of skills for each. The most athletic roster bunch we've have in quite some time which is why along with an easier BIG schedule compared to the last couple of years this team does not take much of step back from last years results.....

I'm going to see and can't wait to see how that exhibition game with Regis goes next Friday and then I am going to make a prediction for the season.

I think the Hawks will be somewhere around the 18-20 win mark. That probably means they are a bubble team and on the outside looking in. However, a slight deviation from that wouldn't surprise me in the least.

This team should be exciting to watch. There is talent on this team but there are a lot of new pieces to the lineup and it will be interesting to see how it unfolds. Can't wait.

20-21 wins. Bubble team, will depend on others whether they make the tourney or the NIT.

Given the age and experience, I'll happily take that. Plenty to build on going forward.

I find it ironic coming off last year for both sports that all some people want is "entertain me", and don't really give a crap about record. Entertaining mediocrity is OK apparently. So here's to a .500 record but dadgummit it they were fun to watch!

Iowa is a relatively inexperienced team and all anyone has been saying is give the team some time. As to mediocrity, did you just wake up from a two year nap!?!? :)

I'm not sure in what context you're trying to use the word ironic, but I don't think it fits here.
One can find a performance entertaining, meaning holding attention and interest, with the result still being a loss.
I found Iowa's game against the 'clones last year in basketball entertaining, with an unfortunate ending for the Hawks.
The Iowa football team, on the other hand, have been far from entertaining in multiple games this year including a complete snoozefest against an atrocious rutgers team in a win.
See how that works?

FIFU. :) Last year we're gonna let Iowa State off the hook, so enjoy it, maybe. 9-4 nonconference. 11-7 B1G. 20-11 before B1G Tournament and a lock at an NCAA invite.
Pretty spot on.. maybe a loss we aren't expecting and a win we want expecting..
