this stat will be brought up over and over with Drake and Coach.. which is why I encourage people to actually watch a few of their games to see why they are 364 tempo. They are one of the best offensive rebounding teams in the country, so not only do they make the opposition work their tails off on defense.. they get offensive rebounds often and pull it back out to make the opposing defense work another 20 seconds; killing any chance to improve the tempo stat.

They aren’t playing keep away for 30 seconds then chucking up bad shots.

This is literally the system Todd Lickliter ran. It made everyone want to gouge their eyeballs out. He called it “The Butler Way”.

Oh I know. I have season tix so I’ve seen every game. It’s a slow pace but it’s highly efficient especially because they rebound so well.

Drake is 19-2 currently. Drakes fans wanted Marty Richter to be the next head coach. McCollum started his first year at Drake with no players, no assistants, no NIL honey pot, no fan support; Yet Drake is 19-2. They won the Charleston classic, beating Vanderbilt in the championship by double digits.

Drake is playing nearly half their games moving forward on ESPN2 and ESPNU. Plenty of chances for everyone to watch and see if that is what you want Iowa to be. Opponents crumble under their pressure and it is fun to watch.
Since ive seen enough of my team crumbling this year I may just start watching Drake instead of Iowa for the rest of the season.

Would be nice to watch good basketball again.

Yes, I'm all for a defense first approach. I think our best team of the last 25 years with Horner, Bru, and Haluska (all Iowa kids) was a defensive-oriented team.

Somewhere along the line the administration determined fans just wanted to be entertained rather than win and so we got stuck with Fran.
Fran was the opposite of Lick. Lick ball was horrible to watch . Although winning would have made it palatable. Be nice to get a coach that is a combo of the two. And who can recruit and keep his players.

Your normal college basketball coach emphasizes defense over offense.

What Lickliter did was not at all normal and the way Fran coaches is not normal either. They are opposite ends of the gimmick spectrum.

This time we should try to get someone from the other 99% of coaches that don't rely on a gimmick approach.
Don't know if you follow the NBA or specifically, Sacramento. After extending Mike Brown last summer, he was recently fired. The AD focused on offense, while Brown focused on defense. Talk about dysfunction. And then you have the owner who's trigger-happy with his front office. Fran has always focused on offense, while claiming to be improving the defense. And then, you had Gary B who maintained the status quo. Throw in a little weight lifting and pictures of them doing that, and not addressing the rebounding issues, is the recipe for mediocrity. Stir those all up, and serve up another disappointing season.

Agree with most of these posts. It is beyond frustrating watching this Iowa team and how careless they are with the ball and shots they are allowed to take. Yes it would be a change of style but like others said, winning cures all.

Iowa has the lowest turnover percentage in the Big Ten.

Iowa has also been incredibly good at avoiding unforced turnovers. In the last 5 years, Iowa’s national rank at avoiding unforced turnovers:
  • 1st
  • 1st
  • 1st
  • 2nd
  • 4th
Of all things to criticize Fran’s teams for, offensive turnovers is not one of them.

Anecdotally I always thought Fran’s team had low turnovers. Obviously the stats prove that. It seems a lot of the shot selection makes it seem like a turnover because they are such low percentage (hero ball/low on the shot clock/bricked 3s).
Even before this season it seemed like Fran and Iowa had run their course. Everything about the program seemed stagnant/stale. Now it seems rotten, teetering on NY Jets level dysfunction.

You are correct. However, I would call a 28 ft. jumper with zero passes basically a turnover.

Hence the theme of the thread

Would you rather win or play fast?

I guess the point I’m trying to make is you can play slow and still lose. The Lickliter years were brutal. A lot of people on this board preferred Fran’s style even if it meant some losses
