What should we expect from the Hawkeyes MBB team this coming season?

Is 20 wins and another NCAA tourney appearance crazy talk?

After losing the leading scorer and rebounder and the only guy that can create a shot off a dribble, I’d say Big 10 title

So should be good for at least one win in Ames with their departures. Maybe Jacobsen will become Kevin McHale this offseason rather than the guy who couldn't guard or score on Wesson.

If we don’t make the tournament we will need to either come very close or have a great recruiting class for me not to lose patience with Fran.

It is all going to come down to our guard play. I am assuming JBo is out... At point, if Joe T can be a bright spot that would be huge for this team. And If Connor can get his 3pt shooting in the mid-30s, that would also be great for this team.

If those two things happen, AND those two plus CJ & Joe W stay healthy, I say we will be an NCAA tourney team. But those are four ginormous IFs...

CJ sounds like the real deal. And he is going to have to be, as there are no other guards... My question on CJ is, who else has seen him play (other than Fran& a few teammates) and commented about him?? Anyone know??

We have seen what Nunge can do. He will be all the wiser, more fluid and stronger to power through in the post. With his good outside shooting, he will be a dynamic player at the 4 position.

BUT if Joe W is forced to play the guard position, as we do not have any, then Nunge, Connor and Till will have to play the 3. I do not like any of those options. Although Connor can guard in that position. None of the others can... And Nunge's talent would be wasted playing the 3,but who else do we have??

And do not even begin to mention Patrick. His dad has stated as much, the kid needs to redshirt. Plus his defense playing at the 3 (or anywhere) just would not happen... Maybe in 2020-2021.

Bottom line is Fran needs a couple of guards minimum, and it is not going to happen. Even with Moss and JBo, we needed two more guards/swing players. That's how you win big in the NCAA. That is on Fran.

I am still sticking with Fran. I have from the beginning, and never waivered. But if he does not bring in more guards and swing players, my patience will run thin in 2020-2021.

We should be top heavy in the 1- 3 positions. A good portion of the Championship teams are running 3 - 4 guards at a time. We don't even have that many on the team...

Assuming JBo doesn't play, they will down to 9 scholarship players( yah I know Riley Till has scholarship). Two of those players will be freshmen, 1 a RS freshman. On with a history of knee problems. Not trying to be a Debbie Downer this season will be a challenge. It will require a tough mental attitude from the players and require each to give 100% each game. On paper it doesn't look good. JBO playing and an additional player would help. Just being honest.

What’s your prediction on the Cyclones? They lost 5 of their top 7 players - including pretty much all their guys that could crest their own shot - from a team Iowa handled pretty easily.

Why are you comparing Iowa to ISU? What difference does it make in how they do?

Hawks need to at least match this season.
This is the season Fran has been building to for three years. He scheduled tough this season to help RPI to get seeded higher.
Time for sweet sixteen at Iowa.

Right now, no idea. I'll need to see/hear about how Toussant progresses over the summer, how likely it is that JoBo comes back healthy and how well did CJF actually progress during his RS year. If there is a plus/check on both of those, I think they could have at least as good of a year as last year. If JT doesn't progress well or JoBo has to RS, I'd expect a step back. If neither happens, I'd expect a big step back. Ask again in Sept.

The availability and ability of the back court will play a huge factor in their season. Good news on all three fronts, and they could be a big surprise.

1. We get a PG transfer.
2. 20-21 wins.
3. Bubble team without JBo.

If Iowa is a bubble team without the players lost to transfer, injury and pros, that would be very impressive.

From the outside, it appears Iowa is thin at guard and is also depending on several newcomers to produce immediately. Outside of Weiskamp and Garza, there are no sure producers unless I am missing someone. I remember Nunce as a player with potential.

Some good prospects set to move into the lineup but they are prospects until they produce, right?

If Iowa is an NCAA team this year, McCaffery will have done a great job.

I am hoping we get the PG from Valpo (Evelyn). The kid is a baller, has experience and would help take a lot of pressure of Joe T and CJ.

There are big IFs, but plausible answers as well. That’s like a lot of teams.

On the positive side, the two expected leading scorers (JW and Garza) are back. JB was going to be a third option, but probably feast on the attention of the other two. We’ve got size and depth in the front court with experience and potential. Connor gives some PG experience and a decent A/T average.

The big IFs affect guard play mostly:
-Patrick is a 4* forward who could allow JW to go to the 2- IF he’s strong enough this season.
-CJ is reportedly a good shooter who supposedly is a better handler and defender than Moss- IF he’s ready to go as a RS frosh.
-JoeT has the quickness and handle we’ve been craving at PG- IF he’s ready for B1G play as a true frosh
-A transfer like Evelyn could come in as a possible starter at guard- IF he could return to his soph form before injury

We need some of those IFs to more or less work out for the 2019 season to be a progressive one.

Expectations without Bohannon should be pretty low.

I respectfully disagree.

IF we get Evelyn at PG, you could argue that gives us three guards that are quicker and have better handles than JBo and Moss. Last season, aside from Wieskamp occasionally, we didn’t have anyone that could beat their man off the dribble. Despite our motion offense and all of the handing off on the perimeter, the offense was still good. With the new guys, the dynamics of our offense could change significantly. I love the idea of Joe T or Evelyn getting by their man because it opens up so many opportunities. They can take it themselves, dump it off to Garza/Nunge/Pemsl/Kriener or throw back out for wide open 3’s. I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself, but I think it would be really fun to watch.

The key will be having a good enough season to reel in some of the big fish we’re going after in the 2020 class. Getting JBo back and with a few studs coming in, that season could be VERY fun.

Evelyn is an ok player at the mid major level before injuries. Given his injury history and the fact he was playing at a lower level I don't think you say he is going to be better than either Moss or JBo. And you are counting on freshman to be good when they haven't even competed at the Big Ten level and it isn't like they high level recruits.

Anything less than an NCAA tournament is unsatisfactory. Everyone is allowed to have a crap season once in a great while because of a combination of injuries and attrition, that was 2 years ago. If we need a perfect storm of things to go right just to get to the NCAA tournament, a rather low bar, then this isn't working out. However, I'd be much more willing to shrug off an NIT if he hits a home run in recruiting.

I want to know how he thinks Iowa St will do since they lost a lot of production from their team, even more then Iowa. I’m trying to gauge his objectivity. Why do you think I would ask? My guess is like a lot of you guys, he either won’t answer or he will have a very hypocritical response.
