Iowa FB starts spring ball today. Four different players set positional marks in the squat.

All-Big Ten center Logan Jones set the overall school record with a 705-pound squat.

Gennings Dunker was just a shade behind at 685, which is the new OT record.

Freshman Preston Ries set the ILB mark at 630.

Jaxon Rexroth has the new record at OLB at 575.

@pink shizzle , you probably would appreciate this story.

Several years ago, at my gym, there was a guy who always wore the same clothing, completely covered up. He was big and muscled but it was hard to tell how big since he was all covered up. He threw a ton of weight around. He was strong as f*ck. One day, in the squat rack, he decided to load the bar with as many 45 lb plates as possible (not sure what the total weight would have been). He had 3 guys spotting him (from behind, and on both ends of the bar). As he went down, the bar snapped in 2, right down the middle. Luckily no one got hurt. Everyone in the gym was watching, jaws dropped. He wasn't even fazed.

Thats pretty wild. I've seen videos of that happening but never in person. The absolute strength of some people, roids/test/PEDS/etc or not can be mind-blowing.

i'm reading the signs...it's gonna be a great season despite (or because of) the kick ass schedule...we get psu at home in october and oregon comes to kinnick for a november game. the possibilities are there. and nebraska might get the chance to destroy our nc hopes

Could you please be specific on what "nc" stands for?

Hopefully @EvilMonkeyInTheCloset doesn't see this!!! ;)

Hoping Mahomes Jr has gone amuck in Lincoln before we visit. Still can't believe that dude will hold up the entire season.

strong quads help prevent knee injuries
The squat also does a whole lot of good beyond the quad. The hamstrings/glutes/stabilizing muscles all benefit. All that weight is on the spine and it all screams for more testosterone.

Btw, just strengthening the quads (which, of course, you weren't advocating) like with a leg extensions is bad for the ACL. If they get too out of balance, on a hard cut that quad will pull that lower leg right out of joint. I know. It happened to me. I was squatting in the 500s and I had had a hamstring strain a couple weeks before. My next hard cut to my left snapped my ACL like a twig. Out of balance.

Debby won't beat the hawks.

We own her.

LOL ... and none of them can block squat. Jones needed to leave but then with this terrible roster bad is probably better than much worse.

Unfortunately the game is football,... not squat lifting.
Yah, too bad Gayle Sayers and Dick Butkus and Joe Namath and Nile Kinnick and other greats of the past didn't have the opportunity to set squat records. They might have turned out to be decent football players.

Of course it's a different era today. I get it. What I don't get is this: Everybody lifts weights. Strong is strong. Football skills are football skills. I'll still take skills over strength. But if you can be strong and skilled, well, I guess that's fine. But no one can convince me that lifting weights has made football players better, even if it has made them stronger.

You do realize the average NFL lineman was 254 lbs in the 70’s, also, right? Lifting weights improves athleticism and the baseline of athleticism in every way.
