Here's the Q&A we did with Beyer before he arrived on campus in June.

Shaun Beyer is making the move to Iowa City on June 10.

For Cedar Rapids Kennedy tight end Shaun Beyer, playing for the Hawkeyes has been a lifelong dream. This year, the 6-foot-5, 210-pounder will get to do exactly that as he begins his freshman year at Iowa. We caught up with Beyer, who will wear #42 for the Hawkeyes, to talk about making the transition to college and much more.

Q: When do you make the move to Iowa City this summer?

BEYER: I move in on June 10th.

Q: What are you looking forward to in starting workouts with the team?

BEYER: I'm looking forward to getting in the weight room and developing my body and gaining weight.

Q: What are your goals for your freshman year? Are you hoping to play or expecting to redshirt?

BEYER: I would like to play if possible, but I think they are going to redshirt me so I can gain some weight.

Q: What is the latest position wise? Are the coaches letting you pick where you start out at and if so will that be tight end then?

BEYER: Tight end or linebacker. They are going to let me pick and then move me to where they want to put me later, but yeah I will start at tight end.

Q: What will it mean to you to walk out of the tunnel at Kinnick Stadium for the first time?

BEYER: I can't wait to walk out of the tunnel to Back in Black. It has been my childhood dream ever since I went to my first Iowa game.

Q: When you look back at everything, what was it about Iowa that made it the right place for you?

BEYER: Iowa was the place I wanted to be. It is my dream school and going on visits made me love it even more. The facilities, the coaching staff, and the players are all great, and I don't think there is a better program in the country for developing players.

As a senior, Beyer finished the season with 43 catches for 853 yards and 11 touchdowns and rushed for 681 yards and 5 scores on the ground, leading Kennedy to a 13-1 record.

I can't remember, did he actually get a scholarship or is he walking on/gray shirt?

44.6 average on 36 punt attempts. I wonder if they'll give him a look at punter? Didn't Marv Cook punt and play TE back in the day??

That would be cool although everytime I saw him punt last year it was rugby style. Don't know how that effects what White would be after.

Been watching Shaun participate in Kennedy sports for four years. Great athlete and an even better person, on and off the field. We have 13 and 10 year olds that look up to him and teammate Dalles Jacobus. Can't wait to see these kids on the field.

Found out at our youth camp this week, that Dalles Jacobus was invited to Iowa camp as a preferred walk-on. That is great news for him!

I may have missed something, but I just watched a LaVar Woods interview where he indicated that Beyer is no longer working with the TE's. He said that they "stole" him form that group. Is he now working with the DE's or LB's? Anyone know? A 6'5" athletic OLB would sure be nice! OLB seems to be the bigger need right now.

Kirk said that they are trying him out at WR. Could make for some interesting goal line fades if he does stick at WR

Wide Receiver since they're thin on depth apparently. Does he have the speed to play out there?

Also sounds like Fant and Hockenson are doing really well.

Thanks everyone. It sounds like he has the speed for WR. I think I read somewhere that he qualified for state in some sort of sprint event. At least now he will not need to gain 30 lbs!

Edit:
5th in the 110m Hurdles
6th High Jump

Piecing it together, that's the way I interpreted the coach's media interviews also. Hockenson and Fant have impressed this summer and Woods is confident in those two at TE. Kennedy is intrigued by Beyer's athleticism so he is auditioning him at WR.

It seems to me that the position coaches may have put their heads together and are trying to find a good spot for Beyer in order to accelerate development - I don't think they would necessarily do that unless they made furtherer assessments after his arrival and had reason to believe that he could possibly contribute sooner. At the very least, he looks like a good candidate for special teams. Its still pretty in camp so you never know.

Good post. I had always hoped he would get a chance at wr. I think if we can redshirt him and let this kid get time to work on his body (along with Doyle), I think he is going to be incredible. Such a great athlete.

However, if he looks really good in camp and the coaches think he can play right away, let him play. What a weapon, as previously mentioned, he would be on the goal line.

I think this is great. Breyer can body up corners and win with size. What a big target for the QB's to throw to

Quite the athlete...
Yes, he is a tremendous athlete. He wrestled his freshman and sophomore years in high school. Did go out his junior, but was working out with the wrestling team. Due to an injury, they needed someone at his weight class, so he threw on a singlet and wrestled.
His senior year, since he had the Iowa offer in hand, he was going to just work out and get ready for Track/Football. The basketball coach at Kennedy convinced him to try basketball. He contributed on a team that was pretty decent.
