Any Lions fans on here? There were several key injuries from last night's game.

This comes from the Detroit Free Press. TJ Hockenson & Mike Daniels are mentioned.

Bigger potential loss for Detroit Lions: Jarrad Davis or Frank Ragnow?

Carlos Monarrez,

Free Press sports writer Carlos Monarrez answers three questions from the Detroit Lions' preseason game against the Buffalo Bills at Ford Field:

Well, Matthew Stafford played after all. How’d he look?

Pretty good over five series. He looked confident threading the needle on some passes and he looked particularly in sync with T.J. Hockenson, connecting on all three passes for 52 yards to his rookie tight end in the first half. Stafford led scoring drives for 10 points and connected with running back Ty Johnson for an 11-yard touchdown pass.

He finished 12 of 19 for 137 yards and a 102.3 passer rating. Stafford moved well in the pocket and looked good on short and intermediate throws, although he didn’t attempt any deep shots.

What’s a potentially bigger loss, Jarrad Davis or Frank Ragnow?

If it turns out either player is lost for a significant amount of time, I’d have to say Davis. As the middle linebacker, he’s the quarterback of the defense, and he showed a lot of promise last season as a pass rusher, racking up six sacks. Jalen Reeves-Maybin, who has looked good in the preseason, will take over for Davis but it remains to be seen if he can be as effective as a run-stopper and leader, not to mention the pass-rushing versatility the Lions would lose with Davis. Ragnow’s loss would be huge, too, but Graham Glasgow could easily slide back into his old spot. The question is how well the Lions plug the right guard hole Glasgow leaves, likely leaving Joe Dahl, Kenny Wiggins and Oday Aboushi as their best guard options.

DAVIS: Jarrad Davis injures leg, carted off

RAGNOW:Ragnow leaves game with leg injury

Besides injuries, were there any other red flags?

Yes, but they were actually yellow flags. As in penalties. On a night that Damon Harrison and Mike Daniels made their debuts on the defensive line, it was some undisciplined play that was most noticeable on defense. The Lions should have had two turnovers in the first half, but Reeves-Maybin’s pick on Josh Allen was erased by Christian Jones’ roughing the passer penalty. Two plays later, Tracy Walker made a late hit as Frank Gore was running out of bounds and A’Shawn Robinson was called for taunting. All three penalties were totally avoidable and led to the Bills’ first touchdown. An elite defense doesn’t make these kinds of mistakes.

CJ Beathard update:

Garoppolo's Rocky Start in the Mile High City (vs Denver on Monday night)

Jimmy Garoppolo and the 49ers starting offense got off to a rough start to open the contest. Garoppolo played the first three series of the game and completed 1-of-6 passes for no yards and an interception. Despite Monday night being the quarterback’s first live snaps since suffering a torn ACL just 11 months prior, Shanahan doesn’t seem too bothered with Garoppolo’s small sample size.

“You always want to play better. But to get concerned over 10 plays, that’s pretty irresponsible,” Shanahan said. “What stinks is when you go out there and you just get a few opportunities and it doesn’t go right and you’re not in a position to play yourself out of it. Hopefully he’ll get to be in there longer versus Kansas City. I hope it’s all good things, but most likely there will be some good, some bad and then we’ll see how long he can stay in and grow from it.”

QB2 Conundrum
Shanahan continues to keep his cards close to his chest when it comes to who will play behind Garoppolo in 2019. Although C.J. Beathard and Nick Mullens have rotated starts throughout the first two preseason contests, there is no word on which will be the first off the bench during Saturday’s dress rehearsal.

“I believe in both those guys. I believe they can play. We’ll see who we decide to go with in the second group this week,” Shanahan said. “There’s a lot more playing time for both of them to get here. I feel very good with both the guys, we’ve had both of the guys here in a lot of game situations. But, it’s been a fun battle to watch. I think both of them are playing better than they have the last two years.

“I know we have two backup quarterbacks who are both capable of starting, and I would be happy with either one as our backup,” he continued. “One of those guys is going to win the job. We will make that decision. I do not see myself making that decision until I absolutely have to, and that probably won't be until the final 53. But if we make it before that, and there's no advantage to hiding it, I promise I'll let you guys know."

Iowa football: How Hawkeyes rookies fared in Week 2 of the 2019 NFL preseason
Dargan Southard, Hawk CentralPublished 1:52 p.m. CT Aug. 20, 2019 | Updated 3:26 p.m. CT Aug. 20, 2019

We're halfway home. Football that actually counts is not too far away.

Two Iowa rookies faced each other Monday night, so that's why this breakdown is rolling out on a Tuesday. If you missed the first installment of these preseason roundups, that link is here.

Let's get going.

T.J. Hockenson, TE, Detroit Lions
Stats: Hockenson had one catch for 22 yards on two targets in Saturday's 30-23 loss to the Houston Texans.

Skinny: It was only one, but Hockenson's first professional catch looked a lot like his Iowa City grabs. The tight end leaked out in the flat uncovered, calmly secured the Josh Johnson pass and took off. Hockenson scampered for 16 yards and ended it with a hurdle out of bounds that picked up six more. It took two Houston defenders to knock Hockenson off his feet. Lions fans should see plenty more of those. Hockenson, who played the first four series with starters, returns to action Friday versus Buffalo.

Media coverage: Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press wrote a little more on Hockenson's catch and blocking progress. The Athletic's Nick Baumgardner broke down Hockenson's catch further and his night overall here.

Noah Fant, TE, Denver Broncos
Stats: Fant had two catches for seven yards on three targets in Monday's 24-15 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

Skinny: Fant was hurt early in Monday's game, suffering a foot injury after cutting back toward the middle of the field on an 11-yard catch. Safety Jaquiski Tartt hit Fant low and ended his night. Fortunately, though, reports say Fant's injury is mild and shouldn't be a long-term issue. The Broncos may hold Fant out Saturday at the Rams. Denver can't afford any more casualties at tight end.

Media coverage: Here is a recap containing head coach Vic Fangio's postgame comments on Fant.

Anthony Nelson, LB, Tampa Bay Bucs
Stats: Nelson didn't play in Friday's 16-14 win over the Miami Dolphins.

Skinny: It sounds like Nelson could miss the rest of the preseason with an MCL sprain in his right knee. Bucs reporter Greg Auman provided an in-depth update on the fourth-round pick last Friday. Nelson didn't participate at Monday's practice, either. But although he might be sidelined a bit longer, it sounds like Tampa Bay still has Nelson in their immediate linebacker plans.

Amani Hooker, S, Tennessee Titans
Stats: Hooker had one tackle and one pass defended in Saturday's 22-17 loss to the New England Patriots.

Skinny: Hooker's pass breakup was nearly much more emphatic. There wasn't a Twitter highlight to find, but reporters covering the game in Nashville said Hooker couldn't secure a pass at the goal line that would've gone for a long pick-six the other way. The one Hooker "highlight" that did find its way to Twitter was the former Iowa defensive back taking a pounding on a run play from Patriots' Jakobi Meyers. Still, Hooker is seeing second-team action. He'll have a nice rookie role.

Media coverage: 104.5 The Zone in Nashville recently had Hooker on for a 1-on-1 podcast.

Nick Easley, WR, Buffalo Bills
Stats: Easley didn't record a catch in Friday's 27-14 win over the Carolina Panthers.

Skinny: Although Easley has no stats to show through two preseason games, he continues to make impacts in practice. Two nice catches, here and here, circulated on Twitter, leaving Easley in position to beat out the likes of Ray-Ray McCloud III and David Sills V for the final wide receiver spot. But Easley needs some game production to back up his practice success. Week 3 comes Friday at Detroit.

Jake Gervase, S, Los Angeles Rams
Stats: Gervase had two tackles (one solo) and a fumble recovery in Saturday's 14-10 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

Skinny: How do you help your case as an undrafted rookie? Show up in the right place at the right time. That's exactly what Gervase did on this muffed punt, sliding in amid a pack to scoop up the recovery. Every ounce counts when you're trying to fight an uphill battle for a roster spot. Gervase is back in action Saturday versus Denver.

Parker Hesse, TE, Tennessee Titans
Stats: Hesse was targeted once, but didn't record a catch in Saturday's 22-17 loss to the New England Patriots.

Skinny: With Jonnu Smith returning to practice, Heese continues to remain buried on the Titans' tight end depth chart. Perhaps his versatility could land Hesse a spot on the practice squad when the preseason ends. Hesse is back in action Sunday versus Pittsburgh.

Matt Nelson, OT, Detroit Lions
Stats: Nelson played 17 snaps in Saturday's 30-23 loss to the Houston Texans.

Skinny: MLive.com'sKyle Meinke tweeted that Nelson was carted off the field at last Thursday's practice, but it must've not been anything too serious if he suited up last Saturday. Nelson got action on Detroit's third-team offensive line. Meinke still predicts Nelson won't make the Lions 53-man roster.

Ross Reynolds, OG, San Francisco 49ers
Stats: Reynolds saw action in Monday's 24-15 win against the San Francisco 49ers.

Skinny: Another up-front injury could help Reynolds' roster placement. Starting right guard Mike Person went down last week and is day-to-day with a foot strain. He likely won't play Saturday at Kansas City, so another opportunity for Reynolds has seemingly opened up. Sacramento Bee beat writer Chris Biderman still projects Reynolds to the practice squad.

Keegan Render, C, Philadelphia Eagles
Stats:Render saw 18 offensive snaps and three on special teams in Thursday's 24-10 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Skinny: Render's touchdown grab in practice last week had everyone smiling. He told the Eagles' team website that his last touchdown was a pick-six in seventh grade. In the present, Render remains on the third team and will have to continue working to earn a roster spot.

For Detroit Lions' Mike Daniels, return from foot injury 'in God's hands'

Dave Birkett,
Detroit Free Press
Published 7:30 p.m. ET Aug. 21, 2019

They’ve never been teammates until now, but Detroit Lions defensive linemen Damon Harrison and Mike Daniels have been friends for more than a decade.

Daniels was a star at the University of Iowa when Harrison played NAIA football at William Penn in Oskaloosa, 90 minutes away.

The two hung out occasionally, doing college things, and Harrison was tight with one of Daniels’ Iowa teammates, Tyler Sash.

“Tyler would say, ‘Yeah, there’s this guy at a small school here, he’s pretty tough. I’d probably bring him to take your job,’” Daniels said. “But Snacks was – if you knew football you knew he could play some ball and clearly he’s shown that.”

More: New Lions DL Mike Daniels: 'Thank God I got cut,' 'get to play for a defensive genius'

Daniels and Harrison practiced together this week for the first time as Lions.

Daniels signed with the Lions last month, but missed three weeks of practice as the team monitored his return from a foot injury. Harrison opened training camp on the non-football injury list after skipping spring workouts while in a contract dispute and practiced for the first time last week.

It’s unclear whether either will play in Friday’s third preseason game against the Buffalo Bills, but Daniels said he’s looking forward to when they and the rest of the Lions’ talented defensive line are on the field together this fall.

“It’s really nice to be out there with the guys and the more you play together, the better you get to understand everybody and know who you’re playing with to build that chemistry,” Daniels said. “Everybody has the right attitude around here and I don’t foresee chemistry being an issue. I think we can just step out there together because of how everybody already gets along personally, and like I said, we all just have the similar mentality. Everyone wants to get better every day and that’s our goal is to get better every day.”

Daniels, who finished last season on injured reserve, said his foot feels “good” now, but acknowledged there’s “always a process” to returning from the injury and that the Lions were “taking necessary steps” by keeping him off the field after he signed.

“It’s all in God’s hands,” Daniels said when asked what concerns he has about his foot going forward. “He’s brought me this far and he ain’t going to leave me, and I firmly believe that my faith is carrying me all the way through and that’s not going to change.”

Briefly
Tom Savage is inching closer to a return from the concussion he suffered in the first quarter of the Lions’ preseason opener. Savage did not practice Wednesday, but he appeared in the locker room during media availability for the second straight day. … Tyrell Crosby also remained out of practice Wednesday with a concussion he suffered against the Patriots and is not expected to play Friday against the Bills. … Da’Shawn Hand, Tommylee Lewis, Austin Bryant, Eric Lee and Teez Tabor were among others who did not practice Wednesday.

49ers' George Kittle zings C.J. Beathard over lack of catches at Iowa
By Josh Schrock August 21, 2019 11:56 AM

George Kittle has become one of the best tight ends in the NFL over the past two seasons.

As the 49ers star was busy breaking records in 2018, many people probably found themselves wondering: Where the hell did this guy come from?

Kittle wasn't a household name coming out of Iowa. During his time in Iowa City, Kittle caught 48 passes for 737 yards and 10 touchdowns. Hardly numbers that scream future NFL star.

Part of Kittle's lack of production can be chalked up to head coach Kirk Ferentz's conservative offense, but Kittle has a different person to pin his ho-hum numbers on.

"I was hurt my senior year, so that’s not on him," Kittle told The Mercury News' Dieter Kurtenbach about Ferentz. "Blame CJ. That’s actually his fault."

C.J., of course, refers to quarterback C.J. Beathard who led Iowa to a 12-0 season in 2015, and now is a backup quarterback for the 49ers.

Sorry, C.J., should have fed George the rock.

Despite the pedestrian stats, Kittle always had faith he could make it in the NFL.

"I honestly never had a doubt that I’d make the NFL," Kittle said. "That’s something that I told myself every day: What you’re doing is for the dream you’re trying to achieve. It really came to light my junior year — my redshirt junior year — I had a really good spring ball, there was an opening at tight end and I just kind of filled in, had a really good camp and just made plays when my name was called. That’s all you can really hope for — to get the opportunity to make the play. Junior year, going into senior year — starting — it just kind of took off from there."

The 49ers drafted Kittle in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft, and no doubt are thrilled Beathard and Jimmy Garoppolo have been throwing him the ball a lot more than in his time with the Hawkeyes.

As the 2019 season approaches, Kittle and the 49ers are looking to take the next step toward playoff contention.

A healthy Jimmy G feeding Kittle the rock, along with some game-day anarchy, just might be the perfect mix for a return to relevance for the red and gold.

49ers Mailbag: Could QBs Nick Mullens or C.J. Beathard be trade bait?

By Matt Maiocco August 24, 2019 9:54 AM

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – There is one major storyline going into the 49ers’ third preseason game of the summer: Jimmy Garoppolo.

Coming off a rough return five nights earlier, Garoppolo will attempt to prove to everyone, including himself, that he’s ready for the regular-season opener on Sept. 8 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

But Garoppolo is not the only question surrounding the team entering Week 3 of the preseason on Saturday night against the Kansas City Chiefs. Our friends on Facebooksupplied some additional questions about the state of the 49ers:

Who will win the backup quarterback position? Isn’t there more upside with Mullens? (Michael Monico)
It is closer than you might think, but I'm going with the crowd at this point and believe it is going to be Nick Mullens. The reason it’s not a certainty is because, actually, there is more upside with C.J. Beathard.

“Every time C.J.’s in there you’ve got a chance for a big play,” coach Kyle Shanahan said this week. “He loves the big play.”

There’s someone else who loves the big play. That’s Shanahan.

He designs his offense to stress the defense into yielding opportunities for the big play. And when the quarterback goes anywhere other than deep with those shots, it drives him to frustration.

That’s why for most of the offseason I thought Beathard would win the No. 2 job.
But I’ve changed my mind. I think Mullens looks very good -- calm, confident and decisive.

What are the chances Mullens or Beathard gets traded as opposed to being released? Do you see any other potential trade candidates? (Greg Threlkeld)
Keep an eye on the Broncos injury situation behind Joe Flacco. Perhaps there could be a fit there, with offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello, who served as the 49ers’ quarterbacks coach the past two seasons.

With so many question marks elsewhere on the roster, as far as the uncertainty of which players will be available for Week 1, I think it will be very difficult for the 49ers to justify keeping three QBs on their 53-man roster. They would love to trade one of them, but I just don’t know what kind of market there will be for a team to bring in a backup quarterback just prior to the start of the regular season.

Who will win the starting WR spots? (Tee Mikey Perez)
This answer is going to be a complete cop out. I do not envision them having traditional starting receivers. Their receiving corps is so balanced that I can see each of their receivers having specific roles in a game plan. So the play call could determine which receivers start on a weekly basis.

As well as Deebo Samuel and Jalen Hurd have looked as rookies, they are still rookies trying to function in this offense. Dante Pettis was the viewed as a virtual lock to be a starter when camp began, and after an uneven start, he appears to be coming on.

Marquise Goodwin, Jordan Matthews and Kendrick Bourne have all started in the past, but they are now scrapping for playing time (or roster spots).

What receivers do you see making the team (Armando Guerra)
Trent Taylor is not expected to be ready for Week 1 after undergoing surgery two weeks ago to repair a Jones fracture of his right foot. He could be a candidate for short-term injured reserve, but he still has to be carried on the initial cut to 53 players in order to be eligible to return this season. (The 49ers have said they believe he will be ready early in the season.)

I can see the 49ers keeping seven receivers to open the season in the event that Taylor can’t practice or play for a couple of weeks. But who? This is where it gets tricky.

Samuel, Hurd and Pettis, for sure. Taylor looked to be on pace to be the team’s top receiver before his injury. That leaves Goodwin, Matthews, Bourne and Richie James.

Goodwin should make it. Then there’s a decision between Matthews and Bourne. That’s difficult. Matthews does not have special-teams value, but he is more consistent than Bourne. I’d still lean toward Bourne because of his youth and his room to grow. But Shanahan made it sound this week as if Matthews had done everything he wanted to see to win a roster spot.

James could draw some attention on the trade market. Otherwise, it would be difficult for him to earn playing time with the abundance of receivers who can play in the slot.

Are the 49ers reluctant to play younger players in your opinion? I think Deebo Samuel has performed well enough to steal some snaps from Dante Pettis and Marquise Goodwin. Do you agree? (Joseph B Ryder)
Generally, coaches take some time to come around with younger players because they want guys on the field who know exactly what they’re supposed to do. Typically, it takes rookies a lot of time to know their assignments. Rookie wide receivers have a difficult task because of all they things they must process on any given route.

If a wide receiver hesitates, reads the defense incorrectly or chooses the incorrect option, the results are disastrous. That’s why it takes more time with that position group. But, yes, I agree that Samuel (and Hurd) will take some snaps that would ordinarily go toward Pettis and Goodwin.

Are the 49ers considering keeping four backs for now? How ready will McKinnon be for the start of the season? (Rick Orozco)
When they make their cut to 53 players, the 49ers can be expected to keep running backs Jerick McKinnon, Tevin Coleman, Matt Breida and Raheem Mostert, as well as fullback Kyle Juszczyk. Even if the plan is for McKinnon to go on short-term injured reserve, he must first have a spot on the 53-man roster before such a move is made.

There still is no indication if (or when) McKinnon will be ready. He and the 49ers should know more once he returns to practice and see how his surgically repaired knee responds.

Will Ward be ready to start in week 1 as FS? Moore has made a name for himself in TC and preseason. (Faisal Refai)
Jimmie Ward is expected to play Saturday night in Kansas City. If he holds up, Ward probably still is the favorite to start because of his command of the defense.

But ... Tarvarius Moore has made tremendous strides since defensive coordinator Robert Saleh said during the first week of camp that he was a long way from being ready to start in the NFL. Moore will be a starter for the 49ers at some stage. The only question is will it be Week 1 or at some point down the road.

Do you think they will try to acquire another guard or center through a trade or scour the final cuts for one? (Brian Taylor)
It looks to me as if the 49ers’ top seven offensive linemen are: left tackle Joe Staley, left guard Laken Tomlinson, center Weston Richburg, right guard Mike Person, right tackle Mike McGlinchey, backup interior lineman Ben Garland and backup tackle Sam Young. Richburg is expected to begin practicing next week, and he could see some action in the preseason finale against the Chargers.

Joshua Garnett is a wild card. He really needed to have a good training camp to show what he can do. But, again, he missed all of camp with an injury. He should be back on the field in Kansas City. Keep an eye on him. Najee Toran, Daniel Brunskill and Justin Skule are also competing for backup jobs.

The problem is there are very few answers out there. Offensive line play is a problem for every team, so I just don’t foresee many solutions shaking free from the rosters around the league.

[RELATED: Shanahan explains controversial coach’s 49ers role]

Will the ones play a lot in the 3rd game? (Chris Lynn Overstreet)
Yes, the starters on both sides of the ball are expected to play the equivalent of one half of football -- somewhere in the range of 30 to 35 snaps. That includes the quarterback.

Is this a make or break year for Shanahan? (Steven Downs)
No.

Sure, the 49ers are 10-22 under Shanahan, but he and John Lynch signed six-year contracts for a reason. This was known to be a tough rebuilding project. CEO Jed York has not wavered in his support for the coach and general manager, so something dramatic would have to occur for that to change.

49ers' backup QB competition likely won't be decided until final cut
By Matt Maiocco August 21, 2019 8:25 AM

The 49ers have not kept three quarterbacks on their initial 53-man roster since coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch arrived in 2017.

And Shanahan seemed to imply the club will keep two at the beginning of this season, too. C.J. Beathard and Nick Mullens are competing for the backup role behind starter Jimmy Garoppolo.

“I know we have two backup quarterbacks who are both capable of starting and I would be happy with either one as our backup,” Shanahan said after the team returned to the Bay Area from its 24-15 preseason victory over the Denver Broncos on Monday night.

“One of those guys is going to win the job, and we will make that decision. I do not see myself making that decision until I absolutely have to, and that probably won’t be until the final 53.”

If the 49ers were to keep three quarterbacks on their roster, a decision on the backup would not have to be made until 90 minutes before the regular-season opener on Sunday, Sept. 8, against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers when seven inactive players must be announced.

Shanahan said he is in “a pretty good spot,” as far as determining the backup. But he said he has yet to determine who will follow Garoppolo in the preseason game Saturday night at Kansas City. Then, he said, the other quarterback likely will see the bulk of the playing time in the final exhibition game, Thursday, Aug. 29, against the Los Angeles Chargers.

“I feel very good with both the guys,” Shanahan said. “We’ve had both of the guys here in a lot of game situations. But it’s been a fun battle to watch. I think both of them are playing better than they have the last two years.”

Based on how both quarterbacks have performed in regular-season games, Mullens is the favorite. Last season, he averaged 284.6 yards passing – fourth-most in NFL history through eight games – with 13 touchdowns, 10 interceptions and a 90.0 passer rating.

Beathard averaged 250.4 yards passing with eight touchdowns, seven interceptions and a passer rating of 81.8. Beathard also was sacked with more frequency than Mullens.

[RELATED: Why it's obvious Jimmy G has significant hurdles to clear]

But Shanahan designs his offense around the big play, and that is where Beathard could have the advantage because of his willingness to sit in the pocket and let downfield routes develop.

“Every time C.J.’s in there you’ve got a chance for a big play,” Shanahan said. “He loves the big play.”

Beathard had two opportunities for big plays Monday night. He overthrew Richie James on a deep corner route to the right side, then Kendrick Bourne failed to hold onto a deep ball down the left side.

“I thought C.J. missed a couple plays early, but nothing too bad,” Shanahan said. “Then Nick came in and didn’t have many opportunities, but made the best (of them).”

Mullens and Bourne teamed up for a well-timed and delivered 1-yard touchdown on a fade route against tight coverage.

As you know, a big reason CJ was drafted by Shanahan is that Shanahan likes the big play on offense. And CJ has a big arm.

Plays like this are what Kyle likes. When the receiver actually catches the ball, however.

This was from Monday night at Denver.

Kansas City: Hitchens, Niemann

San Francisco: CJ Beathard, Kittle, Reynolds

CJ did not play tonight.

The two 49'er announcers said he should see a lot of action on Thursday in the 49'ers final preseason game.

The speculation is that Mullens has won the QB2 job.
