86-87 Team

Different eras.

3pt shot was a novelty then. This team generally takes advantage of it with extra points and spacing.

Defense is far more sophisticated, better taught, and more emphasized these days. But with this coach the difference isn't as pronounced as it would be.

More scholarship players and no doubt, more talent on the 86-87 team.

Easier to get away with a full court press in the 80's. And the way it was taught by Davis allowed it to be much more of a weapon than the current team could get out of their 3/4 court press.

Really it comes down to hypotheticals. Teach the 86-87 team modern spacing, the 3-ball game, and the sophistication and emphasis of modern day defense and it's a no-brainer. Without that modernization for the 86-87 team, the current team would definitely compete.

Either way, I'm taking my chances with the 86-87 crew.

But this season has a weak field nationally, and Iowa certainly has final four chances

I guess the biggest difference I see is that thug attitude is missing. This team is soft oatmeal. Too much social media, too much Instagram. Not that I'm advocating it but that 86 87 team intimidated others. Ed Horton was a bad ass and I think a year later ended Jay Burson's career. We don't have those bad asses and I think that takes a certain urban attitude. You can read into that what you want. I'm brown so I don't think that's racist.

Hit free throws and they win tonight. Shoot better and probably would have beat the zags. I know what you are saying and I absolutely loved that 86-7 teams. Best of times. Horton was an enforcer for sure but Garza would still get 25 on him.

I would take that 86-7 team to win a 7 game series

Tough to accept that the gold standard of Iowa basketball finished 3rd in the Big Ten, and failed to make the Final Four, losing in the Elite Eight despite a 16 point half time lead. That 86-87 team was fun to watch, but they underachieved IMO, given the talent level that year.

That 86-87 team is the gold standard of Iowa basketball, since the program hasn’t come close to that level (Elite 8) over the past 33 years.

I've mentioned it a few times but that UNLV loss was the hardest I ever took a loss. Remember being a young kid shooting baskets out in the wet weather for hours afterward.

I wasn't young but could not watch ESPN for a week in fear I might see highlights of UNLV game. I was a kid in 1970 when hawks lost.
