A little something about Tony Ramos

You've also been taking shots at Brands for some time now. Stuff like that makes you lose credibility, because you're probably not being objective

Let me ask you -- doesn't it appear that there was a pretty big miscommunication between Brands and Ramos?

(Edit: and I haven't been taking shots at Brands. I have voiced why I don't like him as our head coach. "Don't let the door hit you on the ass." is taking shots.)

If you've read my previous post on the topic, I do think that Tom could/should bare some blame in the situation. I also can understand how Tony might be frustrated. Tom didn't do anything egregiously wrong in this situation. He had said a week or two ago that he would be in DD's corner and Terry would be with Ramos. There was plenty of time for this to be addressed internally by Ramos if it was that big of an issue to him

I was fortunate enough to have tickets and the time to attend trials. There was an interesting dynamic going on this morning after the matches. Kids were swarming the floor of Carver for autographs. Tony Ramos signed more autographs for those kids than the other competitors combined. Andrew Howe signed about 5 which was 5 more than Taylor, Dake, Cox, Nico, Garrett, Gadsen, Herbert, etc.
Keep in mind this was after Tony's first match. He still had to get ready for Coleman Scott but he stayed and signed countless autographs. He than came back and signed more after the Scott match. Gadsen, Taylor and Dake flat out ignored the kids. Cox patted one on the head but refused to sign.

Tony didn't handle his post match interview well but he showed what type of man he is by his actions off camera this morning. I am really hoping cooler heads prevail tomorrow when the sun rises.
When listening to Tom Brand's response, it was very clear that Tom recognized Tony's dynamic ability to relate to young wrestlers. He was VERY complimentary! I am sad to hear that Taylor was not engaging with the kids. He was probably too consumed with Dake in his head.

What is Tom supposed to do? The more I think about it the more I feel Tony built this up in his own mind. Tom is a straight shooter and I would bet the house he told Tony they are both his guys. Maybe you should dissect Tony's interview some more. The signs of paranoia are pretty evident when he brings up Metcalf talking about Dan and M* having lunch with Dan. That isn't normal to worry about that sort of thing.

Yes, but he basically admitted that he had told Ramos he would be physically in his corner. And he wasn't. Saying he was there "in spirit" doesn't mean he didn't renege on his promise to Ramos.

When in your mind did Brands openly lie?

Because he made it pretty clear what he meant when he said that he would always be in Tony's corner.

I didn't see where you said Brands should take some of the blame -- if you did then we're in agreement on that part. And I agree that Ramos went overboard. But Ramos is not a Hawkeye wrestler or coach, so I tend to look at this more from the vantage point of how this reflects on Brands; because he's the one still directly representing Iowa. And while I will admit I am biased against Brands at this point, I also believe those who are kicking Ramos to the curb are biased towards Brands; so I don't see that my credibility is somehow lessened more than theirs. Besides, my credibility isn't even an issue. The issue is whether or not Brands created a bad situation, and when the situation became bad did he handle it well.

He did not make it clear that he only told Ramos he would be with him in spirit. He seemed, in fact, to admit that he had told Ramos he would physically be with him. Watching the full Ramos interview, and the full Brands interview, it's hard to come to any conclusion other than that at some point Tom told Tony he would be physically in his corner during the match, should he and Dennis meet up.

If you tell a guy you will physically be with him, you can't then claim you didn't lie because you were with him in spirit.

Disagree completely. First, he did not take any responsibility whatsoever for there being a misunderstanding between him and Ramos. As coach, it's up to him to make sure all wrestlers know exactly what to expect, and if there is a misunderstanding he HAS to take responsibility.

Second, Ramos accused Brands of lying, and Brands admits that he lied, then doubled down on it by looking right into the camera and lying again, saying, "There was an understanding that I would be in his corner. And I was." Wow!
Jeezuz art. You act like Tony Ramos is the 1st guy to have a "perceived" beef with a Coach and feels slighted in some way. It literally happens every single day at some level.

Coaches are NOT always right. They are human just like everybody else (except for Dan Gable.........). What Tony Ramos perceived in HIS mind, may not have been reality, but you're taking it as gospel. What doesn't happen is turning it into something that plays out with teenage girls in every single middle school in America on a daily basis. Selfishness and drama.

Didn't Tony Ramos have the Head Coach of the Hawkeye Wrestling Club physically in his corner? Call me crazy, but that seems like a pretty good deal to me, being its Freestyle and all.

We get it art, you don't like Tom Brands and you love compression shorts (just want to make sure everyone understands where you're coming from).

I actually prefer fight shorts and compression shirts.

First of all, this is an unfair question. You have no idea whether Tony signed any autographs or not. Nor do I. We were sitting 30 feet from mat 2. Nobody signed autographs right after their match; the losers headed out and the winners did an interview with NBC Sports and then with Shane Sparks. There were no kids allowed in the wrestlers' area, so obviously no opportunity to sign back there. None of us knows if he signed after that. . . but seriously, nobody in their right mind would expect anyone to be signing autographs immediately after a match like that.

As champion mentions above, we know that Tony took time out to pose for photos with kids right after a heartbreaking loss to Logan Stieber in the NCAA finals his junior year. That speaks volumes and serves as a great example to refute your accusation.

Furthermore, I don't see the point in running the kid down here based on some things he said in the heat of the moment. Sure, those comments were ill-advised and poorly timed, but it's a bad idea for Iowa fans to do the same thing. Think about it -- you're accusing this kid of saying foolish things in the heat of the moment. . . yet you're doing exactly the same thing of which you're accusing him. It does ZERO good for Iowa fans to fly off the handle and pile on. Let's show some judgment and maturity here, folks. Act like grown-ups. You all seem to feel very strongly that Tony do the same, so maybe "walk your talk" a little here.
True, I typed this all out late last night after this shit storm just happend.
Woke up this morning....and I feel the exact same way. I wonder if Tony is in the same situation...

I'm sure a lot of the wrestlers were not very engaging with the kids, understandably. Taylor is a great kid, and I took his loss almost as hard as Metcalf's and Tony's.

Does anyone really believe this would be an issue at all if Ramos won?

The sad and unfortunate thing about this situation is ... I do. I do think TR would have said what he said although maybe in a different tone. Willie in FloLiveRadio said months back that there were rumors that TR was leaving Iowa. The reality is Willie Saylor knew something was "up" back then. This was a difficult situation from the beginning but the reality is we had two Hawks in the finals, we still have coaches that train our lower weights to elite status. Thanks for the memories TR. I hope all parties can make peace. Much success to TR with whatever he takes on in his next career...unless of course that's against the Hawks.

Maybe Tony should have waited to sign autographs when he was done wrestling. He let everything get to his head. Tweeting about everyone getting their Team Ramos gear the night before. Tweeting himself around 20 people the night before. Showing up to the pre match interview in a suit when the guys around him (who are actually going to Rio ) had windpants on and t shirts. Too many distractions.

yea knight that's my problem with this, it seems like tony doesn't recognize that tom brands just might have had a small contribution in developing tony into what he has become.i hope its post match disappointment, but I don't think it is.i think tony has had this nawing on him for a while.

I support Tony. I just think he has to be realistic about what happened. Tom summed it up nicely, that he will be in Tony's corner for LIFE. & I don't think Tony sees that through the smoke right now.

Ramos is a good kid I think, but heat of the moment or not, last night he bit hard on the hand that's helped feed him the past several years.

Tony will realize more down the road you need others in your corner for many things. Dumb move by him last night.

Agreed. All these guys have choices to make, prior to and after arriving at Iowa. The end will come for all from a wrestling and/or Coaching perspective at some point. That is inevitable.

Look at all the former Hawkeyes now Coaching across the land. Tony Ramos's situation isn't any different than anyone that has come before him. At some point, he'll have to make wrestling and Life decisions. Wish him well and hope for the best.
