It is great to be an Iowa Wrestling fan.

I would love to see both Estrada and KV get some matches in over the next 5 or 6 weeks. They both have enough open dates to cover 157 for the near future. Would be a chance to see how they stack up against D1 competition. CR will get some matches in too I'm sure. Hopefully Teemer will be back by late January to get some B10 matches in before tourney time. Next man up for now.

Rathjen and VV would be my guess at 157 for now

So, not a physician by any stretch. I do not recall hearing about too many hamstring injures in wrestling and I am sure recovery time depends on the severity of the pull/strain etc..

I know getting medical data out of Iowa City is a tall order but what are the "insiders" hearing??? Back by mid-January??

It’s the most unpredictable injury recovery from in sports.

I’m guessing he’ll be fine, but it is really hard to predict an accurate recovery time.

Purely anecdotal I know but I pulled my hamstring about 8 months ago pretty bad. It wasn’t so bad that it hurt when I walked, but I couldn’t run or even jog without a good deal of discomfort. I rested it, stretched it, iced it, jumped in the cold plunge machine quite a few times and let it heal. I ran 5 miles this morning and the damn thing still hurts. Hammies can be tricky. Now I’m 48 and Teemer is in his 20’s, but how he looked Saturday night, he won’t be able to push himself in practice for quite a bit. Time off the mat would obviously affect his conditioning, timing etc. I wouldn’t expect him back for a few months. Hopefully it’s a lot milder than it looked, but he was having a hard time walking off the mat.

I don't want to be that guy but why do the brands allow their athletes to go back on the mat after they are hurt? It makes zero sense to me and likely results in a more significant injury. Do coaches at other big time programs do this?

If nobody ever took the mat banged/nicked up we would probably forfeit half the weights at every dual. Nobody is hardly ever 100% healthy over the grind of a long D1 season.

I'm curious to see both Estrada and KV. But I fear KV is too small at 157 to be much help (like Rathjen), and the fact that Tom put Estrada in the Silver division at Grand View rather than the big-boy tourney tells me he's not ready either.

So I appreciate the article and optimism by Todd, but I don't think we have any good options at 157.

Maybe get Chittun or the other Ferrari to come back. JK.

Rathjen will be fine at 157 and people are forgetting about Vic Voinivich he won't be a small 157

Happens a ton in the NFL. Usually 4-6 weeks. Sometimes 8. I’d be shocked if he wasn’t back for ILL or PSU at the latest.

I've been skimming the internets about hamstring injuries. There's grades 1, 2, and 3 with 3 being the worst and it could take a year plus and or surgery to heal. Hopefully it wasn't a meat fall off the bone pulled pork after twelve hours in the smoker type injury.
Grade 4 is where they take his leg and have him wrestle 125 second semester. He will be fine.

I do question why they had/let him continue to wrestle there. Big dual or not, and regardless of whether it caused any more damage, did not seem like a risk worth taking, especially with someone expected to be a high point scorer for us come tourney time. Long game, not short game.

You mean, there’s hope?

So Cal, you are old and on the border of being put out to pasture dont rush back from injuries like that. Lol
Teemer is very tuff and has had his share of injuries to endure, he also has some pretty good people and facilities around him to get him back on the mat. I had one one these high hamstring pulls also, mine felt like a stage 11 after it happened and took a long time to get back to 100%. I was also a bit over the hill when it happened, but I did not miss any days of work from it. Teemer will be back, the question is how close to peak form he can be by March???

My old *ss still put up a respectable 35:50 time yesterday! My old boss had a saying, “Growin’ old ain’t for sissies” The mind is still young the body doesn’t always cooperate though.

Maybe it’s the new dad feeling but trying to spin this positive, it did happen in Nov, with plenty of time to heal up. It wasn’t a knee which means nobody else has to share the giant brace for now, Hawks are gonna get some other guys action and it never hurts to see what you got in waiting.

Except it would require the Victor Voinovich to burn his redshirt, right?

I would think Rathjen and triple V would be ready to step in. Maybe Robles can get down and challenge, Im sure these guys are chomping at the bit to get in front of the crowd at Carver. Next man up

What has Robles done that makes you think he can compete with the other two guys in any way?
