I guess I knew we aren’t considered a contender this year but seeing the dual promoted as #10 vs #19 was kind of like a slap in the face....I remember many a year that we had the National tournament won by the second day and that was a thing of beauty... but my favorite tourneys were the dog fights (when we came out on top) ....this year has the potential to be a lot of f*# even if we don’t set the world on fire... I love watching a kid like Bowman compete....Wilke looks like he’s came a long ways...I freaking love Kaleb Young and think he may be the second coming of Daryl Weber.... one of my all time favorite Iowa wrestlers simply because of he did whatever the team needed and eventually won a title...I could go on but I appreciate the lunch box guys we have that might not be highly touted but bring the fight every time out....I see a ton of development at the upper weights and a heck of a log jam in the future when Wagner comes into the mix....Regardless of the standings this year at the end ...I’m looking forward to watching this team even if it’s a “rebuilding” year...Go Hawks

Great post, and couldn’t agree more. The comparison of Kaleb to Webber is spot on. They actually even look alike. Really pulling for Kaleb. What a great kid — like so many others on the roster.

Agreed. We commented a couple of times how the guys kept getting after it.

Always look good when you compete against inferior opponents. Same with our first two basketball games. If we wrestled F*** State University yesterday, the sky would be falling.

Maybe you should reread my post....It was based on the fact we aren’t going to be world beaters this year but there are still positives that can make this team enjoyable to watch....we all understand the level of competition....Young had a pretty damn good opponent though.... but thanks for being that guy that brings all of us misguided positive fans back to earth

In years past, our guys would settle for regular decisions against the Riders of the world and wouldn’t go out shooting a lot. On here, we’d piss and moan about the lack of aggression. We lose two matches by a combined 5 points but bonuses in 7/8 wins. Not a bad day at the office.

There was even talk on the Jersey board about how Rider would make this a close dual...a “get your licks in this year boys because Iowa will be back next year” type of thing.

I think even though this looks like a down year there are a lot exciting things going on with the program and HWC....team seems to have great attitudes and are close knit... kind of fun to have lower expectations... what do a lot of them have to lose.... pin the ears back and let the fur fly...looking forward to the season ahead and the future

You bet. Look at the new faces bringing a ton of energy into the program - that's going to show on the mat right now.
New Faces
Spencer Lee
Jacob Warner
PD3
Mark Perry
Boris Novachkov
Jesse Delgado
Max Murin
Pat Lugo

There were definitely a lot of positive things about last night.
Stick goes down 0-6 and comes back to get the fall. If Lee goes this match is over in the 1st period.
Laux was my lone disappointment last night. He is who he is but could still qualify.
Turk is going to go through some ups and downs this year but by the end of the year he will have a outside chance to be a AA
Soaring Eagle has added some nice moves and still has a couple more in his bag stay tinned guys!
Kemdawg is fun the watch. He is really good at winning scrambles and as the year progresses don't be surprised to see him win by Tech in this match
Young looked solid and almost got the win. As the year progresses don't be surprised if he wins this match.
Gunther is Gunther a good wrestler that is a fringe AA
Bowman should have his own highlight real from last night should definitely get him ranked now.
Cash Money looked pretty good last night also. Liked what I saw.
Stollhouse has returned!!
Best thing about last night is as a whole they are no where near peaking it's a new approach and I LOVE it!! I am excited to see what they do as the year progresses. I still think a healthy Fosu is the team to beat then psu in 2nd then it's a crap shoot between 4 or 5 teams. IF we were to have Lee, Marinelli, PDIII, Warner starting we could make a run at it. But I truly believe fosu has 10 AAs and 2 champs I don't care who you are that's nearly impossible to beat.

I don't get how anyone can say that the only disappointment was Laux when he actually won, and Turk got worked by someone not rated by intermat.

Yes. Cefelo is a skilled kid (2x NJ state champ, I believe) who just hasn't put it together in college yet. I was surprised Laux won.

In any event, it would be bad for your emotional health hoping for big things from our first three weight classes.

This is exactly what I was thinking "pin the ears back and let it fly" this is precisely what they need to do. These guys are being trained by some of the best in the business and it will really show when they open up and let it rip. The greatest things about this year is being the underdogs and the guys really seem to want to show what there made of. The energy that is radiateing from the program this year has me more amped up for the whole team than the previous bunch of years.

I can't LIKE this post enough. There are all types of "fans". Put me in the same category you're in.

Good thing you included 'nearly' in that last sentance. Anyone and everyone can be beaten.
