A&W has returned to the Corridor for the first time in many years, thanks to a new Coralville opening.

The new “All American Food” restaurant opened in early October at Coral Ridge Mall, according to a social media post from the shopping center.

Owners Atul and Sandy Patel previously owned and operated an Orange Julius and Karmelkorn Shoppe for 25 years, according to an announcement from Coral Ridge Mall.

One of the last known A&W locations in the area, near the corner of K Avenue and Ellis Boulevard NW in Cedar Rapids, was closed by the flood of 2008. That location never returned, even as other nearby restaurants and shops came back to the area.

Other locations open around Eastern Iowa include Burlington, Davenport, Dubuque, Mount Pleasant and Sigourney. A&W Restaurants has 12 locations across Iowa.

why don't they ever have the old style of jugs that you used to get. I remember the one in cedar rapids as a kid. Rootbeer there was totally different. Think it was less carbonized. Plus they had the best yellowjackets at the drive-in.

Nothing like 25 cent Coney night every Tuesday back in the day. Or a Papa Burger basket. As kids we always wanted to park outside and have the trays hung from the windows and eat it there. But after twice either my mom or my dad getting the tray of root beers spilled into their laps, we usually went inside. So handy to pick up the little phone in your booth and give your order!

man, you are taking me back to my youth, with drives across the country to Wyoming every summer in our family truckster with my parents, three kids, and a dog. and weekend fossil hunting with my dad, where if you could remember facts about particular fossils (I remember repeating to myself "belemnites, 200 million years ago"), you got to stop at the A&W on the way home.

Ha! Our family would sometimes go to the one in CR on Ellis Blvd way back in the day and we too had at least one, memorable, occasion where the whole drink ended up in my brother's lap. :) Must have been a thing. :)

Only a slight hijack here: There used to be a chain of restaurants in north-central (Peru, Ottawa, that vicinity) Illinois that made their own root beer and it was all you can drink for one price. Are they still there? What were they called?

So I take it that the A&W located in the Casey's out by the CID airport is no longer there?

When I met and started dating tBW back in 1981, her folks owned an A&W. I thought I had died and gone to heaven when I found out.

That was my thought too? The last A&W I was ate at, was the Casey's by 380/CID. Assumed it was still there?

Marion had the best A&W kitty corner from Todd's Indian house and across the street from Thomas Park. My kids all worked at the Ellis A&W as the wife was friends with the owner and we owned a house on Ellis near the park.

In the early 60's there was an A & W where McDonalds' is now at Benton and Riverside Drive. They tore it down to build a Philips 66 gas station which was razed to build Micky Ds. Then that McDs was razed to build the current one...
The skeleton of that was there when I moved to ic way back when.

There was one in the Sycamore Mall for a long time. We were poors who didn’t have ac in our house, so it was a special treat to go eat lunch there.
Then the location was a Diamond Dave’s?

RIP Ground Round. Yes, I know it was next door - just reminiscing about the general area.

Used to work at the Kirkwood Softball Complex across the street from the airport during the summers back in HS and used to eat at that A&W A LOT!

Wasn’t there an A&W in the Coral Ridge Mall food court for awhile?

Wife has to point out A&W whenever she sees it. Way she almost fiends for it makes me think the one in Emmetsburg must have put crack in their food and ice cream. We passed several on our way to and back from Tucson, AZ this past weekend.

The a&w where I grew up in Wisconsin got me hooked on fried cheese curds and curly fries. I’d probably have a BMI of 10 if it wouldn’t have been there.

I grew up 2 blocks from that one. It was pretty much the only Marion place we got FF from until it closed. 10 cent ice cream cones too!

Side note...my brother, sister and mom all at one time worked at Todd's Indian House in the early 70's.
