The recruiting is hard to
one of the best posts I have read on HR in a long time. Great post And1Improve the offensive line to the point it's actually deserving of the ridiculous Joe Moore Award.
The two freshman tackles took some heat but they actually show promise. More disappointing has been the play of the interior guards and center. It's time to value brute force, size and physicality up front over 'small finesse technique' guys. Regardless of who the play caller is and what the scheme is you cannot run an effective offense when there is penetration and your lineman are taking turns getting blown up at the LOS. All offensive football is predicated on the play of your line!!! Everyone focuses on the glitz and glamour stuff but 95% of games are won and lost on the line of scrimmage.
The number of plays we have a guard or center in 1 v 1 being over-powered and shoved into our own backfield is mind boggling. It totally disrupts plays. It's a true indicator we are not strong enough nor physical enough. The freshman tackles will be fine but we need much, much more on the interior.
Suggestion to play the bigger Paulsen twin over Reynolds and Render as he offers more size and physicality. I would also consider moving Wirfs to guard and give a kid like Kallenberger a shot at right tackle to see if he can handle it. Now a Jackson-Wirfs-Daniels-Paulsen-Kallenberger OL might actually resemble a real power 5 OL with tremendous size and physicality. Finally someone has to get through to Daniels that his athleticism is worthless if he's not tough enough. Get in the weight room and change your attitude or your career is over after next season. Way too soft of a player for the talent he has.
One other suggestion is to turn up the heat on Doyle. Our strength and conditioning is living on past accolades not current results. We are not the fittest, toughest outfit anymore and it shows in so many areas of our play. In tight games and second halfs we can't get it done. Getting whipped on the LOS constantly. Since Rhabdo... our S&C has been a C- and no longer a strength of our program that it once was but we are paying top dollar and need to expect more.
