Adam Woodbury Revisited

I am here to eat a little bit of crow. I felt that last year Gabe was clearly the better player vs. Woodbury, and while I have not been a detractor, my support for AW has been limited.

Here is a summary of what I see as mostly positive - the evolution of Woodbury the player.

1. I feel like he has improved greatly in his SELF AWARENESS. Meaning I feel he has a better grasp of his strengths and weaknesses. I see him playing more within himself and clearly delivering net positive results as a great team-oriented player. His overall toughness and moxie are major assets on this senior laden team.

2. His Interior defense continues to be solid. While he is a slim shot blocking threat, he is one of the few large bodies on this team that can truly bang with some of the more active centers we have faced. He held his own against a very athletic front-line from both Michigan and MSU. One of his biggest improvements has been the reduction in fouls, which was an issue last year. He is averaging about 2.1 fouls per game, similar to Peter Jok (they play about the exact same MPG). This has allowed him to play a more consistent role.

3. His rebounding continues to be a major plus and he is averaging a respectable 6.3 per game, edging Jarrod for tops on the team. He is tied for 9th in the B1G.

4. He is an opportunistic and efficient scorer. He is shooting over 54% from the field, at just under 9 points per game. While his game largely lives around the rim, he has polished a decent 8-10 foot shot. He also has excelled recently with some cuts to the basket turning into easy layups. He has improved on his "bunny" conversion which was a pain point in previous years.

5. His free throw shooting is excellent, especially for someone who is not a particularly great outside shooter. He is hitting at a very strong 79.1, which is good enough for 15th in the B1G and one of the best on the team.

6. His passing is above average for a center and an added plus. He is very savvy in this area. He averages about 1 assist per game, roughly the same as Uthoff on a per minute basis. I would like him to get his 1.2 turnovers per game down.

Im right there with you. I was hard on Woody early in his time at Iowa. The guy has improved and is a great player for Iowa.

Its going to be hard to watch an Iowa game and not see Gessell, Clemmons, and Woody on the floor. Seems like they have been playing at Iowa for 10 years! I hope nothing but greatness for these seniors! I hope they continue the streak they are on and can push their season deep into March!

Woodbury is a major asset. No doubt about it.

No substitution for hard work. He has earned respect. Another coaching success as well.

His defense will be missed next year, no doubt about it. And, while he hasn't been a star here, he has improved quite a bit over his time here.

To be honest has been doing most of those things all four years. He has steadily improved on his FT shooting and he has converted a few more of those bunnies from past years. Always been a good passer, good position rebounder and good interior defender (and pretty good high hedger).

As for his fouling being down he has stated in a few interviews that in years past he was able to play a little more reckless BC he knew between he and Gabe they had 10 fouls to give so he was going to be more aggressive. The lesser fouls this season is just changing his game up now that Gabe is gone.

Offensively he is running the pick and roll better but his teammates are also looking for him some more.

I for one have appreciated his game for 4 years as it was obvious early on his value was on the D side and any offense he gave you was just icing.

Agree with this. In year's past it was like the guards saw a "Do not pass" sign hanging around Woody's neck when he would roll after setting the pick. Now, they seem to finally be able to get him the ball. Some of this (maybe a lot) could be Iowa's improved 3 point shooting. This prevents the defense from sagging and Iowa has much better spacing than any time during Fran's tenure.

Woody has been solid, providing the Hawks with the little things that don't always show up in the box score. He hasn't been great but a very solid contributor. Foul troubles in the past have limited his contribution. He'll be missed next year, as will all of this year's seniors.

Woodbury's been solid for awhile. First of all, you can't teach 7'0. Also you cant teach the agility of a 7 footer to come out and hedge like he does and get all the way back to the rim defensively. Moves his feet defensively and has since he was a freshman. Has always blocked out well. Made himself one of the best foul shooters in the Big 10. He's always run the floor extremely well. People were expecting 20 & 10 out of him because he had a UNC offer. He was never going to be that. Solid player for a few years now

I think this is the key. There is more room to operate, without a bunch of ball swatting mosquitoes there to bother Woody as much. I'm sure his coordination has kept improving as well, and he's not so "hurried" under the basket. He's making most of his bunnies, which he hasn't done very well up to now. Let's face it, sometimes he just looks clumsy and other times fairly fluid (for me it usually comes with a smile and a headshake whenever Woody does something that looks "smooth").

He gets up and down the floor well for a 7 footer, that's for sure. Wish he could jump too, that ship appears to have sailed forever. I personally won't miss Woody all that much, but you can tell he loves being a Hawk, and I am glad that he chose to come in and hope to kick-start the Iowa Basketball resurgence, which appears like that is happening. Happy for him basically.

And I don't think he's poked anyone in the eye this year! That is huge! LOL!

Agree totally with these comments and observations. Woody - YOU DA MAN - this year.....keep it up.. We need those 9 pts from you and six boards!! Best tho, is your interior defense against other big men. Go Hawks

While I agree that he has been much improved this year, and has absolutely been an asset this year. Our best lineup is when he is on the bench.

I've always said the best we can hope for with his progression is to be like Erik Hansen was... while Woody won't be winning any defensive POY awards, he is quite solid on defense and he's gotten to that 9 pts & 6 rebs number that is quite effective.

You want a great analogy as to how much we'll miss him next year? Think about Iowa State missing Hogue this year. It doesn't show up a ton in the stats, but all of the little things and his toughness inside matter.

Nice one and true. He was becoming the most hated player in the B1G. More importantly he had members of the media trashing him and the Iowa bball program. I prefer they spend their time talking about how well the bball team is doing and not how dirty a player Woody and how Fran needs to crack down on him, etc. It's better to have positive PR for Fran and the program.

Iowa has been so much better this year as an outside shooting team....Woody spends a lot more of his time all by his lonesome. Iowa has threats that need to be covered from outside.

Fran has also been using him a bit less in some critical times, smaller line up...giving Woodie some rest.

Woodie and MG both feel less of a need to be the scorer, playmaker, and this has put them more at ease.

Woodie...as stated has improved...less is more for him: fewer dumb fouls, less ball stripping, a few less bunny missfires, he boxes out pretty well, plays hard, helps out on defense, sets picks all game long, rebounds at a competent level, can take and make that short jumper if needed, and his FT shooting improvement is quite amazing.

Fran has more options...this is good for MG, and Woodie in spades.

Hard work is paying off for Woodie...cool.

Maryland really likes to pick and roll with Tremble. Woodbury hedges and recovers as well as any big man out there. After watching last nights game vs Northwestern, I am feeling more confident about our trip to the XFinity center next week.

pick & roll you are spot on...you are not going to simply outscore a team like Maryland on their floor. Starts with defending their big guys...we have no chance without Woody in there. no chance.

What is extra nice about the great defense he is playing is that he is avoiding fouls. We don't have anyone else on the team that can go toe to toe with another true big man.

Woody is a warrior. He has not displayed a timid bone in his body since his first moment on the the court. He will bang with anyone and does not take any crap on the court. I think Hawk fans will miss him more than they think next year.

I have to agree with Dutchy, it's Woody's ability to stay out of foul trouble. That is something I really didn't believe he could do. His game has gotten better, free throws, cutting to the basket, ect, but it's his defensive presence and his ability to stay in games, that's the biggest difference.

I agree with all 6 of your points. Funny thing is that most of those items you listed he has been doing the last couple of years. The big difference this year is he is not committing near as many fouls. Most of that has to do with being a senior and just flat out playing smart.

His high school coach told a few of us at a tailgate, freshman year, what his strengths were, passing, defending, running the floor,
diving for loose balls, rebounding. It's been laughable and hurtful at the same time to read hundreds of posts, demanding the dunk, the fly over, the " in your face highlight jam'"
People, Doyle can make you bigger, faster, more explosive! When was the last time you heard of a 6-7 or above player who could train and perfect, an increase of 4-8 inches of verticle leaping ability!
Adam W. With 4-5 inch longer arms, and that big bounce, would be a longtime
NBA stud. He has what it takes, been healthy too. Can't change genetics, but his heart, and B-ball IQ has been a blast to watch! He and Mikey, Sapp and Utoff are all in, let's help them with the most fan support they've seen since they got here!
