I rewatched the first half and it pretty muched verified my initial reaction. Our offense went back to elements that plagued us so many times this year. Our defense played their butts off in the first half but were on the field too much and were handicapped by poor field position and Wisconsin executed to perfection a couple well designed plays on their first TD drive.

Now the offense.
Coaching: Another horrible game plan that didn't put our players in positions to be successful. Why were we in shotgun right off the bat and so much while 'pretending' we are running zone read? Our QB isn't 'reading' anything as he has no intention of pulling the ball and running, so what is the point? The unblocked DE sprinted to the RB everytime and Stanley handed it him anyway, where could have run untouched for 5-10 yds. easy on one play at least. Like I said before the game, line up and run power (not stretch) right down their throats and then play action and throw DEEP to back the defense up. We never threw the ball further than 10 yds. the whole first half. Unreal.

Wisconsin's blitzes are all zone blitzes as they only have 2 down lineman and you never know which of the 4 or 5 LB's are coming or where they are coming from and they like to stunt. To handle that, our OL would have to play very disciplined zone blocking in pass-pro, but it appeared they were 'man' blocking in pass-pro on several occasions allowing LB's to fly up the A gaps untouched. Welsh was helping to the outside numerous times or simply blocking 'air' while LB's are coming up the A gaps. Unreal. Poor coaching.

Fant and Hock are good receivers but can't block and don't appear to even put much of an effort into it, so why are they on the field if we're running the ball or even bootlegging? Pekar and Veir played a lot last year because they were decent blockers (especially Pekar) but we never see them. That is on the coaches! A couple examples; Hock motions and lines up in a 'H' back look (we had a FB also) and we run straight power to the left. Hock has to SEAL the LB but makes a halfass effort and allows the LB to just trip up Butler when we had them destroyed at the point of attack and should have been a huge run. Then they run a little rollout/boot action and Fant has to pin the LB to the inside. He makes a halfass attempt (and Wadley was supposed to 'chip' the same guy on his way out, and you should see that feeble 'attempt', it's laughable) and the LB chases down and hurries Stanley. Once again, this is on the coaches IMO.

BF is not a running back coach and it shows. The backs are way to impatient and missing the holes and especially cut backs than last year or any time that I can remember.

We reverted back to killing ourselves on 3rd down (we didn't convert a 3rd down the whole game) in the first half. 2 drives in the first half had false start penalties on 3rd down and then ISM drops a wide open easy pass that would have been a first down. Like I've said all year, this is the most undisciplined team I've can remember in the KF era. We got lucky against OSU because they were less disciplined than we were and that is pretty much all that amounted to.

Why is ISM still on the field coaches? How many drops does it take before you give others a chance? And where was Toren on the occasions when we did run power? Wadley is not an ISO RB. Sorry. Wadley goes down way to easy where Toren would run through some of those tackles and have some yards after contact. Unless Wadley has room to spin or jump cut, he is pretty much worthless between the OT's. 80% of the time, you don't have that room, but there are still hard running yards to be made.

Even Stanley had his problems but I don't put a lot of this on him, but on the play were he almost got sacked for the safety, he had plenty of time to throw and had Wadley open out of the backfield but he never even looked at him. Take what they are giving you young man.

I know this is a transition year with new coaches at 4 positions but I've said it before and I'll say it again, we have the wrong coaches at some of the positions and for some reason there is a lack of discipline this year. I don't buy the 'youth' excuse. KF better get a handle on his offensive staff or this isn't going to get better any time soon.

And don't get me started about not catching punts! I don't care if we have to put 3 people back deep on punt return....catch the goddamn punt!!!!

This team is better and has more talent than is showing on the field. Time to get some discipline going Kirk, starting with your son. I don't get on the coaches much and have great respect for KF. Sometimes the other team is better than us, but as long as we compete, I don't get too worked up about it. This team is WAY to talented to be playing the way they are playing. I don't think we've been 'out-talented' or out 'physicalled' by one team this year. We are just getting out disciplined and out coached in my opinion.

damn good post
Agreed. It gets old listening to people complain about the coaches and say they suck, but when you break down the game and give honest reasons why you feel the coaches failed to do their job, I have no problem with that. Good post, OP.

I guess they were trying to emulate PSU/Barkley with that read option thing where the rb was standing at Stanley's shoulder at the snap. Since Stanley was zero chance to run, they could just key on the rb and watch for the pass if he held it. Don't think it worked even once. A lot of wasted prep time and snaps on that play.
