Apparently this is no longer an acceptable chant at a high school basketball game, or at least where my kids go anyway. This was chanted last night at the opposing team and our AD came over and reamed them. They were only allowed to make "positive" chants.

I understand not allowing the "bullshit!" chant but this is a little much. Hell we used to yell "she's grazin in the lane!" to opposing post players of a larger stature. Just seems like a little much to me.

Grade school game: not ok
Jr High game: not ok
H.S. Varsity game: fine with me

Kids need to learn to fight through some adversity, and acquire 'thick skin' in life. Learning to ignore those kinds of chants/taunts and perform through them is part of growing up.

'Twas a varsity game.

If you don't like it, don't shoot airballs.
under agenda 21 and common core, if a kid can artistically imagine a hoop about ten feet away from the actual hoop, and he can identify that imaginary one as the actual hoop, then it counts. the airball counts. under common core, the airball should be awarded three points for creative identification skills

Jeez, people are pussies. Some parent probobly got all butt hurt and sobbed to the AD. I could understand if a bunch of 40 year olds were chanting it at a 16 yr old, but if it's the student section, come on.

So really, under common core, they are chanting a positive. "airball" gets awarded three points, so they are excited, the dude made the shot!! three points! it's a positive. 2 plus 2 does indeed equal 5. it's sort of like cheering on folks at the special Olympics who are losing. tell me they are gonna ban that next. these people in high positions in schools wonder why we have morons waiting on us at mcdonalds.

I has a confused.

I'm talking about this current climate in schools where you award the kids a trophy for just competing. if a kid says 2+2=5 , then great. if a kid says his thing is a not a thing and he's girl, by all means let him in the womens' restroom. if a kid thinks he can imagine a basket, a hoop, ten feet from the actual hoop, he can identify it. great!! three points for the airball!! it's called common core. tell the AD he is discriminating and the kid identifies that airball as three points. call the AD a racist, have him fired. get with the university of mizzou folks, see how to protest this. get gary pinkel on it.

Your scenario is possible. It had been chanted on and off in the first half and the AD was there for the duration. When he came over in the second half to confront the student section, he did so with vitreol.

They should have started a new chant after that: "GAS-BAG!!!"

Shit, those kids from Decorah can handle it.

#NortheastIowaTough

Well I must not be NE Iowa tough because I couldn't handle the product on the floor. I would guess 70 combined turnovers? Although there's no way a statistician could keep up...tis the season of giving you know.

I would have been just fine with the student section walking out of the gym. Only positive chants. Holy Hell.

When I was in HS they made some lip service to not being mean to opponents during games but no one listened and no one was punished for stuff like that.

In college it was pretty well outright encouraged. There wasn't even any lip service to it.

Only time someone tried to get us to tone it down was when I went to a game and the commissioner of the Mid-Con Conference was there to present our team the season championship trophy if we won the game. At one point he heard one of our normal chants in which we yelled at the other team "We're gonna beat the hell out of you" . . .

He asked us to please stop doing that.

We did not.

But no representative of the University ever asked us to tone it down.

Hell, ai 6ell airbags at my son if he shoots one (which happened on his first shot attempt of the season). When my wife told me to shoosh, I told her what was mentioned above, if he can't handle it, don't shoot airballs.

Student section when I was in high school would have done the opposite. They would have been more vocal and louder after that knowing the AD wouldn't be throwing 70-100 students out of the game.

When I was in high school in 94-98 (small 1A school), our AD wouldn't allow chants that were directly negative toward opposing players (airball was discouraged). We could say a thing or two to the refs, as in disagree with a call, but no personal attacks.

We chanted all kinds of other crazy stuff that kept the atmosphere great, but no direct personal attacks or profanity were allowed. I thought it was ok, but do admit being a little annoyed that "airball" wasn't allowed.

I hate the wussification going on everywhere, but think direct attacks on players are unnecessary.

Good point...but I have known principals who would have.

Ok, so I'll bite. I know it's just kids being kids, but the thing is we know a lot more about behavior, depression and stress on kids. Why the need to yell air ball? It seems like no class and the kid is out there doing his best. Would you all think it's normal for us to come to your job and say "You suck at mowing lawns!!"?

Goodness, it's playful badgering by high school kids towards other high school kids. If adults were doing it I would say it's wrong and severely immature. I had it happen to me in HS and so did many of my teammates, we just kinda smiled and took the ribbing. If a kid has such thin skin that a "airball" chant makes him stressed and depressed, he is going to have a rough adulthood.
