Aircraft Carrier Collides With Mediterranean Cargo Ship

Darling, you must not have been paying attention when everything was Biden's fault, even before he took office. Of course its not their fault and that comment was intended to point out the hypocrisy and ridiculousness of everything being Biden's fault.
Well bless your heart.
Do I have to use the sarcasm emoji every time?
🤔

I'm not quite sure of bang for our dollar on future aircraft carriers is really needed. Smaller ships that can launch drones is the way to go.

But I'm no Navy expert. I can tell you that if I was in charge of the Navy in 1941, I would not have had half the fleet in Pearl Harbor at one time.

You’ve got a lot of company there. And in fact there were a couple of ships including carriers out at sea that morning if my memory from the history books serves.
And yes the drone launch capability is going to be hugely important going forward but I think the ships needed will be in addition to the carriers for a few years.

We've spent enough on the current fleet to last a long time.

Problem we have the Navy is the same problem we have with the air force. Their toys are just too damn expensive and you are always going to have the Congressmen and Senators where they are built fight off any spending cuts. Ike knew what he was talking about.

And Trump is the opposite of Teddy Roosevelt. He doesn't speak softly while carrying a big stick. He talks loudly with his small stick.

Remember all those campaign statements that the Ukraine war would be over in 24 hours.

Pathological liar? Or is it the syphilis induced dementia?

I live in one of the country’s biggest Navy towns with two major bases. My house sits under the takeoff/landing path of NAS Jax (scarier of late).

Florida is home to enormous Navy/Air Force/Coast Guard installations so you’re right about our Congressional delegation ready to fight any cutbacks or closures.

We need an independent commission with authority to close bases again. Furthermore, absolutely no money from War Machine companies given to the reps/Senators.

If DOGE really wanted to save money, that would be a good start. But it is not about saving money for them. It is about power/control

The CO for a carrier has to be a former pilot naval aviator, I presume the XO as well.
That's going to winnow the field significantly.

Odd to have a twin engine plane just decide to fall out of the sky. Gear were down.

There was a Growler that crashed a few months ago, killing both.

I don’t think you have that right. Might want to check it out especially the terminology.

A commander of a ship was not necessarily an aviator. They are called pilots of their ships.

Nole brother, you really don’t understand the military.

I hope they do.

But with the events of today, I’m afraid there will be problems.

I have a simple solution. Send an Uber to see some folks.

There were some base closures in Florida the last time there was a push for elimination of unneeded bases. Orlando’s airport is in fact an old Air Force base (McCoy).
The Army built a huge base just South of Jacksonville during WWII (Camp Blanding) and it was turned over to the Florida National Guard. We also had an Air Force base west of town (Cecil Field) that was built during WWII and it’s become a huge Commerce Center.
So much excess capacity but lots of bases in small towns meant jobs for people - who voted.

This is where we differ. We don’t need the little bases, but what do need are people in intelligence, developing the new technologies.

Google Top Scene. That was the Desert Storm thing.

Now we are going to drones. We supply weapons to other cities and they test them for us. And, we keep developing them.

We are the largest supply of weapons in the world. It’s how we make our money, and with little loss of life, because we get the buyers to test them for us.

The minds in the science and technology in the Pentagon are there. Why break something not broken?

Elon wants all of that tech. Some of you hit yourselves upside the head. You can’t see the damn forest for the trees.

I don't think we disagree. Tech research is fine. But I am kind of jaded on spending from my experience in Iraq: part deux.

There were KBR, Blackwater, General Dynamics folks making 150K - 200K for doing less work than me.

There is a clusterfvck wasted money once you start privatizing your military. Zero accountability. And quite frankly, considering some the history of our defense contractors......we have a problem.

But, fvck it, lets cut VA staff.....that will make everything better

We definitely are on the same page.

In my experience, people like you did the work. I’ve got issues with the contractors on several levels.

On the highest military levels, the contractors are making x3, at least.

Sadly the younger recruits think that if they go in, then later they can get a job with the likes of Blackwater et al. (One of my friends is working as a recruiter, former af brat, she went to the army and Afghanistan. )

These young guys want to know how they can get to Blackwater et al. They don’t understand the drill.

I served on the Truman from 2002-2006, she’s a great boat. For anyone that’s never taken a ride through the Suez Canal it’s so narrow in places people from the shore can almost reach out and touch a ship as big as an aircraft carrier. Anytime we entered the suez we were on high alert and in battle stations.

The story says the collision happened while they were waiting their turn to enter the canal.

Post cold war eliminated a lot of excess. My first 2 assignments were eliminated.

K.I Sawyer in the UP of Michigan and Hahn AB in Germany.

A bunch of the northern SAC bases were closed or turned over the ANG. Not sure there's much excess left in the AF.

DOD went the "Joint Base" route as well...combining different branches on the same base.

Our captain was a pilot, it's funny whenever the captain would fly... they would always announce "Harry S Truman Departing" or "Harry S Truman Arriving"

The first time I heard the announcement I was like, isn't that dude long dead? And someone had to tell me, that meant the captain was flying.

I'm not saying you're wrong, in fact, I'm almost positive you're right, but that doesn't make any GD sense at all. Which is why it is the most likely way this plays out.

I agree with you. But what I'm saying is being in the wrong place at the wrong time destroys, rightly or wrongly. The admiral will likely come out of this without duress but as I posted, his reputation may not.

Afterall, the Captain was in all likelihood not at the helm.
