A study published last year, looking at data from more than 7,400 U.S. high school seniors who said they had used alcohol or marijuanaat least once, found drinking alcohol was associated with more unsafe driving, damage to relationships with friends and romantic partners, and regret about actions while under the influence of alcohol, especially among females.

"We always worry about pot as a gateway drug," Carroll said, "but research shows us that about 9 percent of people who experiment with pot will become dependent or abuse it. The percent that later become dependent or abuse alcohol is greater than 20 percent. So more people who use alcohol are actually going to have a problem with it later in life."

Which is worse?

Based on the guy in Cedar Rapids who just got his 15th OWI (no kidding), I'd say alcohol.

In the bigger picture it will take the results from decades of credible studies to determine which is really more dangerous to the users and the public in general. Both have their consequences.

How people ever managed to allow government to criminalize hemp and marijuana never ceases to amaze me. But, it's not alone on my list of things that never ceases to amaze me.

The stuff makes me incredibly paranoid and I never used it more than a handful of times. Enough to confirm "This doesn't agree with me." Alcohol was much harder to put down. I haven't used drugs, chemicals, substances, recreationally in at least 25 years.

How do you get 15 and not be in prison? That's crazy. If that guy were to kill anybody, the state would have a huge lawsuit on their hands.

There are two huge differences between alcohol and pot.

1) There is no accurate way to quantify level of impairment of drivers who have used pot the way there is with alcohol. Until they figure out a way to do this, any comparison on that subject will be speculation at best.

2) Of course more teens are going to become dependent on alcohol than on pot. Alcohol is far more readily available and more affordable. You can buy alcohol in almost any grocery store, convenience store, liquor store, drug store, restaurant, and tavern in America. You can't do that with pot. If it was legal to buy pot anywhere in America, there would be far more people addicted to pot.

Of course there are more problems with drunk drivers than with stoned drivers. People drink in public and then drive home when they shouldn't. You don't see a lot of stoned drivers because it's illegal to smoke pot, therefore people tend to do it in the privacy of their own home and don't need to drive afterward. If you could smoke pot in a bar or restaurant then there would be far more stoners driving around, crashing into stuff on their way home.

Never agreed with you more.

While I'm not proud of it, In my younger days, I had a fair amount of experience in driving impaired with alcohol and also with marijuana.

I'm not advocating either practice, but I can assure you alcohol had a much, much larger effect on my decision making and my motor skills. They are not the same at all.

I'm no expert though, so I'll wait for Arbitr8's wisdom before I make up my mind.

The vast majority of people who drink do not do it to get stinking drunk, however most everyone who smokes dope does it with the intention of getting stoned.
