Back injuries ended his career before it really got started.
If I am not mistaken, it was concussion issues so he shut it down instead of dealing with ongoing issues. Smart decision with CTE being so prevalent in football players.
Kanellis will serve as SC coach for the wrestling program for several years and likely become the football SC coach when Doyle steps down.
I believe the wrestling position only pays $42k/year. I’m guessing that being one of Doyle’s assistants pays more than that? Maybe this is to get in staff at IOWA and then transition to football? But that’s a big change in pay from Alex to Doyle.
Yea maybe I skipped a few steps but I do think he will transition to football and eventually be the top guy. Hometown kid who is good at the job. Doyle is only 49 so AK will have time to get in and do an "apprenticeship" of sorts.
If he wants to take over for Doyle when he leaves, he probably should have been on the Iowa staff at least 5 years earlier. I would guess many former assistants probably have interest and of course better qualifications this point. Assistant at D1 >>>> head at class 1A high school
Kanellis now not taking the SC position for Iowa Wrestling. Staying at Regina. Heard from a source at Noon that he was backing out. Confirmed this evening.
Wanted to keep that Iowa City Regina hype train a rolling through small town Class 1A high schools.
Not too sure other than AK saying that the reasons were his own. Pretty vague. Maybe there will be a more in depth interview. Maybe Dateline could come in and do a story on it and then we can all rest easy knowing "why".
