Flat tax is a stupid idea. There are thousands of pages in the federal tax code. Only one or two pertain to the tax brackets. The remaining code deals with how to calculate your taxable income.

So a flat tax simplifies nothing.
I'm not sure where, but I remember hearing that if something like a flat tax was implemented there would be tremendous savings due to the simplicity. I will go find out and research it more to see if that would be the case.

Update - With anything there is obviously a downside and they could be mitigated, but this explains at a high level what the cost savings could be.

Because among developed countries, our tax burden is lower than average. I'm curious where you come up with your statement, outside of your personal feelings.

Tax revenues as percentage of GDP

Countries with highest tax burdens
Those countries are Socialist and have a different tax structure. Those countries do not have as many taxing entities and the federal government is the primary taxing authority.

France federal outlays are 56% of GDP, of course they have a higher tax rate.
Just because Socialist countries have a higher rate does not necessarily mean the US has a low rate.

Well, high and low have to be relative to something. Relative to other developed countries, our taxes are low.

Comparing the US to Socialist countries is a valid comparison?

Income and Profits Taxes: Taxes on personal income and business profits made up 49 percent of US tax revenue in 2015, a higher percentage than in most other OECD countries, where such taxes averaged 34 percent of the total

Social Security Contributions: The United States collected slightly less revenue from retirement, disability, and other social security programs—24 percent of total tax revenue—than the 26 percent OECD average.

Property Taxes: Property taxes provided almost twice as large a share of US tax revenue—10 percent in 2015—than the OECD average of 6 percent. Almost all revenue from taxes on property in the United States is collected by state and local governments.

Goods and Services Taxes: The United States relies less on taxes on goods and services (including both general consumption taxes and taxes on specific goods and services) than any other OECD country, collecting 17 percent of tax revenue this way compared with 32 percent for the OECD.

US looks pretty progressive. More Income,Corporate, and Property Tax. Less Sales tax.

Iowa has a higher state tax than Florida

But that’s the only comparison that’s relevant.
This makes no sense. Of course the US has different tax structure than other countries. The US has a different political structure than other countries.
That doesn't mean the US tax structure is low or high.

The two states are different in how they tax, so, how is a comparison of the state tax rate between Iowa and Florida comparable?
That is what you have been attempting to do with the federal tax as a % of GDP.

I wasn’t suggesting comparing just one kind of tax. I suggested — as I always do when discussing taxes — comparing the effect of all taxes combined.

All you’ve done is explainined why our taxes are relatively low.

Yeah, most of the countries listed aren't 'socialist'. Just because they're "more socialist" than us doesn't really make them socialist. Even if they call themselves "socialist democracies" that's still different than "socialist".

Yes it does when you are comparing nations. That’s kind of definitional.
