All-Star Classic

JB - What is the purpose of the all-star meet? Is it just to promote the sport?

I am sure a lot of the non-"Big" programs love it as a way to promote their program.

I could also see some negatives from having your wrestler compete. The meet is during the season (why isn't earlier) and it could interfere with competitions. Not sure if teams have stuff that day but I know teams have competition that weekend and those wrestlers probably won't be competing with their teams. Another thing is that a lot of weights the wrestlers may already be competing against each other multiple times during the year, do they really want to add a fourth or fifth match-up?

One thing that might help promote this event is to do a joint venture with Flo(WNO). The coaches would want to be there to be around the future recruits and have their wrestlers be there too. I am sure there would be a lot of challenges to getting this to work but I think it would give the coaches an added incentive.

I know in the state of Iowa if a high school wrestler competes in an event like WNO/NOC and there is also a college match in the same event the high school wrestler would be ruled ineligible for their high school season.

One question JB...why didn't the nwca let Flo broadcast this instead of track? their video service isn't nearly what Flo's is. Definitely learned that this past weekend

I'm not privy to the contacts since I'm not full-time, but this is the way events are going. There's bids and events are starting to have more streaming rights to them. Trackwrestling, in this case, got the contract for this event after Flo had it the last few years.

I guess there was a better deal on the table. I can't definitively say which product is "better" but I know Trackwrestling does offer a la carte purchases whereas you have to be a subscriber to Flo to get their offerings. I also know the NWCA has been using Trackwrestling's bracket software for a number of years -- and with Flo now doing their own thing, Track and Flo aren't exactly playing together in the sandbox. They're in the same sandbox, but they're not really acknowledging one another's existence. Example: There's not been a single thing posted on Flo about the All-Star Classic and four of their employees are on the release list. Draw your own conclusions there.

I also believe the quality of the stream can depend on the quality of the event and the quality of the internet provided. I'm not sure which event you're referring to, but if you hit me off board (as not to hijack this thread), I might have a theory or two depending on which event it was. If it was the one in Vegas -- yeah, doing ANYTHING there is a pain in the butt. They charge thousands of dollars for the smallest amount of bandwidth. Flo's had problems with that event in the past, too.

Ross is right and this varies state-by-state. Competition prior to "practice" is also an issue. Like in New Jersey, their first weekend of competition is the Beast of the East, they can't even practice until after Turkey Day. Then there's the whole "too many chiefs, not enough indians" kinda thing when it comes to grouping with other people.

I was gonna hit you on the tweeter but you did point out the event. Wasn't so much the streaming as it was the archiving of videos afterwards

They must be struggling to get commitments. I actually can't blame guys especially in the upper tier for avoiding this. No one at 25 yet or did I miss something?
