All Star dual is back

FLO could be in the bid process for the venue. Like it or not, this would make good business sense. The announced matches make this a true all star meet.
I am hoping for less ducking in key matchups this year.
Not sure if it will be in the new event space or not . Flo moved it's headquarters and is renovating the old building into an event space

With PSU sending Starocci and Brooks- i wonder why not RBY or Dean ?

Because it’s an all star meet, not a Penn State dual. These affairs work best when there is a good mix of top stars participating as well as a good mix of programs. Also, in my world, they should all be intra-conference matchups to reduce the number of matchups that will most likely happen during the season.

The event will be at the old Flo HQ with very limited attendance (mainly athletes' family). If the event is successful, we'd certainly entertain moving to a larger venue but traditionally neutral site wrestling has been tough attendance-wise. In many cases, it doesn't offset the expenses.

Glad it's back and some great matches as well. That's a fact neutral site wrestling doesn't sell and never has

No, you're just saying what many others were thinking over the years. It took a while for Flo to get their act together, but now I think they may have. Austin is Flo's (and Rofkin's) "home turf," isn't it?

And yes, the lineup looks great, and it should be a great event. I don't see this having much effect on promoting college wrestling in the state of Texas, and I don't see UT-Austin starting new wrestling teams anytime soon either.

people forget how close wrestling was to getting kicked out of the olympics and with colleges dropping wrestling programs we need to take every opportunity to grow the sport

That requires bringing in “new” fans obviously and Texas should be a hot bed of athletes…… especially with their proximity to Oklahoma…… the sport just needs more exposure……hiding it behind a pay wall doesn’t do that obviously…… but this will be a fun event

Because…they’re 4-5 days apart. This would put the team wrestling once on Thursday and twice on Friday, traveling back on Saturday, and then the 3 wrestlers would depart for Austin on Monday. It’s not an ideal schedule to manage weight and compete, plus the Army/SHU/Buffalo duals are not critical especially at the beginning of the season. It could be done but I don’t think it’s likely.
Warner and Cassioppi are scheduled to make the trip to NY and Woods would be if he wasn’t day-to-day.

Per FRL this morning, Woods is not wrestling at the All Star meet

Bummer. Obviously, B1G 10's and NCAAs are the objectives, but was looking forward to seeing Woods at the All-Star meet.

Silver lining, maybe now I can see his Hawkeye debut in person at Carver(whenever that may be).

that sucks….. The original all star dual I thought was an Ncaa event… I attended it at Carver back when Ironside beat Colat….. it was an awesome event….. if this is just Flo making money that’s sad and I hope like hell they’re paying the wrestlers
It was never an NCAA event, it was always the NWCA All-Star meet. I attended it several times, including when it was in CHA. The one time there was during a blizzard, which severely hampered attendance, but was a great show. Maybe my mind is failing me, but I believe it was there twice, and in the Fieldhouse at least once. It didn't used to count on your official record, which made it easier to get the #1 vs. #2 match-ups.

I was there when Ironside beat Kolat in Carver believe that was the all star duals……I know prior to that match Gable had Marks older brother Matt in the room to drill with Mark to get him ready…… they had National duals at Carver too remember being there when it was Iowa Minnesota in finals and Minny brought out Brock Lesner for the first time

The best dual meet I ever witnessed and the craziest environment I’ve ever witnessed was at the national dual finals in Carver vs Minnesotan I believe 1998.. Iowa was up by 5 going into HWT thanks to Lee Fullhart gutting out a wild match vs. Tim Hartung on a locked hands call in double OT.(one of the very few times Lee ever beat Hartung). Shelton Benjamin hit Wes Hand with a lat drop for the fall at HWT and absolute chaos ensued. I was pretty young at the time and was sitting in what was the 3rd row of the Iowa section when the bleachers are pulled in at Carver. The Minnesota section was right next to us. Fans were going after each other, athletes were going after fans and vice versa. Zalesky had to physically restrain Ironside with a strong clothesline/headlock combo from sprinting into Minnys bench at one point.. All the other teams were sitting matside on other mats vividly rooting against Iowa…. Some of those guys were going back and forth with our guys and the fans as well. We were in awe.. It was awesome. /csb

Have some awesome memories of it at the dome in Cedar Falls as well. Badly wish that event and the hype around it still existed….

Hard to beat Carver for a wrestling environment….. So many basketball fans complain about it say it isn’t loud enough….. I say go to a good wrestling event and see how loud it is

My memory is terrible as to what year what events were but I’ll never forget the look on Hands face when Brockner came out of the tunnel and did a front flex at the Iowa crowd….. had to be around the same time span

I remember having one of my daughters there and Mcguiness went from almost on his back to pinning I think it was Guerra from okie state place went insane and I looked down at he she had her ears covered with her hands and grinning ear to ear

You sure it wasn’t Steven Schmidt and are you sure it wasn’t the other way around??

My memories all blend together as well, but I believe that was 2000. The unleashing of Lesnar that is.

I can’t remember specific matches well….. I honestly think I had a few too many concussions when I was young 😬

as far as who Mcguiness reversed and pinned that is…..it might have been Doug Schwab even…. I just remember my daughter’s reaction and when the crowd settled down she said the Iowa guy won right Dad?

the last national duals I attended was at the Uni dome Matt McDonoughs freshman year….. he surprised people and I remember seeing his Dad and saying he looks like the real deal and he just grinned and said we’ll see

around the time Cedar Rapids had the great flood….. I was working 7 days 12 hrs a day to recover the penford plant and went to lunch every day at HyVee for the salad bar….. it was summer and Matt was in there damn near everyday too hitting the salad bar probably his redshirt year

I was thinking some more and remembered a cool moment from that all star dual…. I can’t remember who the 167lb match was between but it was very boring. Midway through the match we started a “Where-is-Darryl?!” Clap-clap…. clap-clap-clap chant and the whole crowd joined in. I remember Gable even looking around and smiling and leaning over and saying something to Mark Johnson I believe…. Cool moment. And we all know who ended up on top of the 167lb podium that year.

Yet another /csb

Darryl Weber is one of my all time favorite Hawks….. the epitome of doing what was needed of him and eventually he was rewarded for it

110%. He’s only recently been surpassed on my all time sentimental favorites list by the one and only Daughg.

Edited because I can’t have this conversation without mentioning Mike Zadick also. You could really jumble these 3 however you’d like but they’re the top 3, hands down.

So glad your brought this up. I was a pretty cocky 25 year old about that time. We were in the first row (which was probably row 10 or so in Carver) behind the Minnesota bench area. Because the bleachers were pushed back right there, we're up about 10-12 feet, whatever it was.

Anyway, Fullhart wins that match and our section and arena is going crazy, some backup (never found out who it was) for the Gophers is looking straight up at me and the guys next to me, I flip him the bird and yell some expletives at him, he attempts to "rock climb" those pushed up bleachers to get to me, the guys next to me were ready to throw down with him if he got there. Crazy environment, as you explained.

Well, things finally settle down but then Wes gets stuck, the backup wrester looks up at us, flips us the bird, give us the WWE DX crotch sign, yells some sh*t. The dude next to me tries to climb down and go after him, his buddy grabs/stops him, probably pretty lucky he did, likely would have got hurt on the fall and then pummeled too. Crazy!

I was 19 and I remember all that like yesterday. Everything about that dual is burnt into my brain. I was less than 20’ away from you and all those events you mentioned. I even remember what that guy looked like…. Somewhat of a grizzly Adam’s type with a darker beard and glasses. What a riot!

I’m good friends with Joe’s brother Bill….. I hunted down there with Bill a lot….. most of the hunting I did with the boys was late bow season and filling extra doe tags around Cedar Rapids….. we actually got together and “pushed” deer bow hunting….. filled a lot of tags

Joe was an awesome guy….. I was a union VP in my day too so always looked up to Joe
