We’ve had recent articles for all Ferentz teams, but I’m curious about what everyone’s all time iowa team is? And do players like Lou king, duke slater, and Nile Kinnick make your teams.

What changes would you make? This is what I have for offense (I’m young so there may be a bias)

QB: long, banks, Tate, hartleib
Hb: Greene, Shaw, banks, Betts, Harmon? Kinnick
Wr: McNutt, djk, Dwight, Kasper, Hinkle, Solomon, Quinn early
Te: Clark, cook
Lt: gallery, Reiff
Lg: Steinbeck, Jones
C: Nelson, Blythe
Rg: Yanda welsh
Rt: Scherff, Bulaga

That offensive line shows your age..

Here's an All Time Iowa Team that Gannett put out in 2000, so no KF era players on there. I would be interesting to see which we'd add and who comes off the list when we do.

Interesting. The only one I really would add would be Bob Sanders for Glassgow. Gordon Locke was a big part of undefeated teams. I will say it again. In my time as a fan (Since 1975), the two impact players were Andre Tippett and Bob Sanders. Lots of very good players in the KF era. Its possible Fant passes Marv Cook. Dallas Clark simply didn't play as many years as Cook. Also, maybe Gallery over John Alt, but thats a tough one. Yanda became a great NFL player, but its hard to say he was a great player at Iowa.

Mr. Belding played for Iowa????

A lot of challenges when putting together the all-time team, especially without having a 2nd team. Among them:
  • Time span too long for anyone to see all of the guys play.
  • Different eras make comparisons problematic.
  • Before the mid-60s, they played one-platoon football, allowing position flexibility for the old-timers (e.g., Alex Karras on the OL rather than DL), giving them an advantage over the more recent players. (As an Outland Trophy winner, Karras must be on the team, of course, but he can be shifted depending on your OL and DL decisions.)
A couple of issues with this particular list:
  • On Hayden's 5-2 defense, were the guys listed as DE's really DE's or OLB's? Tippett and Smith were officially DE's, but they make this team as LB's. Because the DE's sometimes dropped into pass coverage, you can make the case for it, but that obviously has a strong impact on both positions.
  • Besides the LB finesse, the Gannett writers cheat here by listing 5 DL and 3 DB's. I get it, lots of good guys on DL (another reason Karras appears on OL). They also list 2 RB's and only 1 WR. I guess you have to keep #24 on there, and that's one way to do it. Another way to do it would be to designate him as "all purpose." That would work, because he was an iron man and still holds the career and single season INT records.
  • Other than C, OL and DL positions are not distinguished. Neither is DB. A more accurate list would do that.

Setting aside issues with the pre-2000 all-time team selections, I'll stick to the question of which 21st century guys would be candidates. Because there is no 2nd team to quibble about, the list will necessarily be short.

  • RB Shonn Greene. Yes, it is based on one season, but what a season it was. Harmon played RB only two seasons (he was at WR his first two), and Kinnick was arguably a better DB. Greene could bump Kinnick to "all purpose" or DB, or Harmon drops off the list.
  • WR Marvin McNutt. Easy call here, and he wouldn't even have to bump anyone with only one WR listed on this team. (If there were two, presumably the other would have been either Early, Hughes, or Noonan.)
  • OL Robert Gallery and Brandon Scherff. Outland Trophy winners have to be on the team. I think Niland played guard, so Alt and Slater would have to go, unless Karras gets moved to DL.
  • LB Chad Greenway. As per my previous post, it isn't clear that Tippett and Smith belong here (listed as DE's when playing). Greenway replaces Smith. (Much tougher call if Andre Jackson had been included.) I love Jewell and Hodge, but not over Station or Tippett.
  • DB Bob Sanders and Desmond King. There's only 3 on this team right now, so only one would have to be cut. Glassgow and Locke were primarily known as offensive players, while Krause (though also a good WR) had a long NFL career as a DB. Glassgow was B1G MVP in 1929 (primarily because of his play at halfback), so Locke gets the short straw. If Kinnick goes to DB as a safety, then Glassgow would drop off as well.
