Why don't Southerners speak right? I heard Ryan McGee bust the off again on Marty and McGee this morning. If you are saying, "y'all", why throw "all", in front of that?

In my opinion the most famous "all y'all" had to come from Dr Dre and Eminem's Forgot About Dre.

Once upon a time 'ye' used to be used interchangeably with 'you', so you could have a statement like "I will persuade ye all to agree with me". Next shortening goes to y'all from there. This was around 18th century.

There are some other thoughts on origin but this was what was explained to me on the topic in college lit

"Y'all" is synonymous with "You guys" for northerners. So "all y'all" is the same as saying "all you guys", which isn't weird at all.
