Ames linebacker Joe Evans has made his college decision. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Evans will be playing for the Hawkeyes after accepting a preferred walk-on opportunity from the Iowa coaching staff.

Evans' decision comes on the heels of his official visit to Iowa City this past weekend, which helped make up his mind.

"Iowa felt like home to me," Evans told HawkeyeReport.com. "I knew after the visit that's where I wanted to go."

Along with Iowa, Evans also considered a walk-on opportunity at Iowa State.

As a senior, Evans led Ames High School on both sides of the ball, finishing the season with 2,438 yards passing, 754 yards rushing, and a total of 36 touchdowns on offense to go along with 69 tackles on defense.

6 walk-on linebackers... are the guys currently in the system that far behind

With walk ons everyone could theoretically dress at home but we are limited with how many guys we can travel with correct?

Who is the girl?

Realistically, half the walk-ons will be gone after year 1. We'll probably have 3-4 earn a scholarship and become a starter and maybe another kid or two that is a special teams guy all the way through, but never earn a scholarship or will his last year (Kevin Ward type)

Is it me or do we seem to be adding A LOT of walk on’s do we always have this many or is it just getting more publicity?? I figure the more the marryier these kids play their tails off!

Wondering the same thing. Especially if all are “Preferred” meaning they’d get an invite to fall camp. With only 105 being allowed at fall camp and Blair has 14 listed. That doesn’t leave much for walk-ons from prior classes or not all scholarship guys will be getting invited to fall camp. I thought in years past, a couple scholarship guys aren’t invited to fall camp and those seem to be the guys leaving at the end of the season or not coming back for a 5th year.

My guess is:
83 scholarships invites
12 Previous walkons (kickers, punters, long snapper, fullbacks, positions players)
10 2018 PWO's
