Andrew Van Ginkle is out so is Griffin Grady for the Badgers

So who on their defense from last year is actually play Saturday? The D tackle and?

This is a double edged sword though coz it will likely tempt BF to call for more passing and Leonhard might well anticipate this.

So basically Wisconsin will plug in two randoms and their whole defense will magically turn into the f***ing '86 Bears and we won't be able to do anything offensively except piss out pants and forget who we are for a half hour or so........
The good news if you are correct is that would mean Wisconsin will perform worse than last year and drop one extra game -- hopefully to us. The bad news of course is that the 86 bears still won their division.

That news makes me feel even more confident that Iowa can get the win. They are losing players while we are gaining two offensive starters back in IKM and ISM.
damn, i just want our OL and DL to punch them in the face and dominate like the good old days

when Iowa's DL and OL dominate, we normally have a great season

I think right now Van ginkle is listed as questionable and a game time decision... although it sounds like he is a long shot to play

Ordinarily, I am not a gambling man, but I would bet that Van Ginkle will play. No inisider info, just a feeling that this IA kid will want to be on the field in his home state.

Griffin Grady is a backup inside linebacker and is definitely not a pass rushing specialist

NT Olive Sagapolu, ILB TJ Edwards, ILB Ryan Connelly, and SS D'Cota Dixon are the returning starters. I would assume DE Isaiahh Loudermilk, ILB Chris Orr, and OLB Tyler Johnson are the only others that saw meaningful snaps against Iowa last year. OLB Zack Baun sat out with an injury, but I believe he would've played some the last time Wisconsin was at Kinnick.

The top 4 CBs had not taken a meaningful snap until the first game this season. FS Scott Nelson redshirted last year. Breakdown of the defensive line if you are interested:
The starting DEs for UW last year were Conor Sheehy and Alec James. Both of those guys graduated. The second string DEs were Chikwe Obasih and Isaiahh Loudermilk. Obasih graduated, while Loudermilk is just back from knee surgery. The third string DEs were Garrett Rand and Billy Hirschfeld. Rand tore his achilles over the summer and Hirschfeld quit football to pursue a career in journalism.

Basically UW only has one of their top 6 DEs from last year, and that one is still getting back into shape from surgery. The DE rotation currently consists of Loudermilk, a walk-on redshirt freshman in Matt Henningsen, and a redshirt freshman that was on the offensive line until fall camp in Kayden Lyles. Both Henningsen and Lyles need more seasoning in the weight room and on the field before they can be consistent run stuffers.

UW also graduated two starting OLBs from last year, both guys who were very good setting the edge. Things are not looking promising for Van Ginkel, one of the starters, to play this week. There will be lots of inexperience at OLB as well this weekend.

tl;dr, if Brian Ferentz can't get some resemblance of a running game going against this defensive front, he should be fired. I suspect Jim Leonhard will sell out against the run and put his trust in the redshirt freshman corners to lockdown Iowa's WR

Disappointing news. Van Ginkle is one of their best defenders. He's a really fun player to watch. Would have been a good measuring stick for our tackles.

Technically 1985 Bears who played the '86 Super Bowl. watch the 30 for 30 special on ESPN on that team. Amazing they won as dysfunctional as they were and how much they partied at the Super Bowl.

Lots of hype happening! Objectively speaking, if our offensive does not play significantly better than it has so far this season, our Hawkeyes are at a very significant disadvantage even if Wisconsin is short a player or two on their defense. Can we win with 4 field goals... maybe 12-10? It happened at least once before. More than good enough for me!

this is as of Sep 17.

Of the 11 listed, can someone break down how important they are (ie, a projected starter, current starter, etc).

Gink will be a game time decision. I talked with family member last night. Mid to high ankle sprain. Still some swelling. If he plays he will not be at his best. Feel bad for him. His dream of playing in Kinnick May not happen.

Maskalunas: 3rd string ILB
Neuville: A starter at TE that crushes people in the run game
Pearson: 4th or 5th on the depth chart at safety
Van Ginkel: A starter and great playmaker at OLB
Benzschawel: First TE off the bench if Neuville is healthy. More of a blocker
Grady: 2nd string ILB
Howe: Buried on the depth chart at DE
Shaw: He’d get a couple carries a game if healthy
Platter: Freshman that wasn’t physically ready to play yet
Rand: Would’ve been a starter at DE
Smithback: Walk-on reserve lineman

He could have lived out that dream by coming to Iowa. Unless he always hated Iowa or something?

Can't say our OL is dominate but they haven't been all that bad considering suspensions and inexperience. My feeling is that the entire offensive momentum will rest squarely on Stanley to make accurate throws. Of course if Iowa took anything from BYU's offense they can run jet sweeps all day long.

Gink was in a boot Sunday if he still has swelling he is still sore he will be limited I bet they keep him out

I agree. Will be surprised if he doesn’t play. Actually it might be to our advantage if he does. He won’t be anywhere near 100%.

so am I correct that if Neuville is not a go, Wisconsin would be on TE #3?
Not technically. Penniston opened up the year as the #2 TE and is healthy. He is not a good blocker though and only has one catch on the year. Jake Ferguson started as the #4 TE, but has outperformed Penniston so far. He is mostly just a pass catcher at the moment

I, for one, hope AVG is healthy enough to play, and his dream of playing in Kinnick comes true. Then, I hope my dream of him losing in Kinnick comes true!
