I’m not sure you’ve driven through any real poor areas in the US. You’re right, they aren’t living in caves, but they’re living in shacks and shit hole areas with next to nothing.

i don’t consider someone living off the grid in an unplumbed Appalachian shack to be the typical poor American. Many people at the poverty line have cell phones, air conditioning, welfare assistance, Medicaid, free public education, public transportation, and grocery stores.
