CNN showing footage from a community college in Oregon with reports of 10 dead.

What if, instead of making a bunch of knee-jerk assumptions about the killer's motivations and mental state and the legal status if his weapon(s), we simply expressed empathy for the victims and their families while waiting for the facts of the case to be released in due time?

Oh, who the hell am I kidding? That's just crazy talk.

I just went to a short ALICE presentation earlier this week. It has me curious now on how people react in these situations.

The only empathy that matters is that which prompts you to make the world better. Why express some empty platitudes to people who will never read them?

Forget the political motivations, this crap is getting old. It is sad that when I go to Yahoo and see a red headline at the top I just assume mass shooting

I'm convinced that nothing will happen with gun control. After Adam Lanza fatally shot 20 elementary children and 6 adult staff members at Sandy Hook in the middle of the day, and not a single thing was done about it. Nothing will happen with gun control. This issue is the modern day version of slavery. Each President and member of Congress knows the problem and can do nothing about. They are just kicking the can down the line for someone else to deal with. When it is finally dealt with, it will tear this country apart.

Make that 15 with 20 wounded.

Jeez this could be bad. Doesn't sound like they have taken down the shooter yet.

Quick who do you all think is the first person to claim it's a false flag operation?
How can anyone disparage an American who is just using his God-given Constitutional rights? mOre power to him. The gunman is fighting for you and me. A few souls have to die to protect our right to bear arms.

Why haven't they released a photo on the shooter yet? Nearly all other cases they slap the photo out there asap.

Yeah if all the past mass shootings including one on elementary school children hasn't spurred congress to action then nothing will.

Too many people are worried about the guberment takin away their guns to worry about the lives of other Americans.

What exactly do you want to happen? No automatic rifles? How about hand guns ban those also? How do you feel about hunting rifles?

No amount of gun control is ever going to stop these shootings at this point. The most dangerous places to be are places that don't allow guns. Notice how it seems to be schools which get shot up the most?

I think you are misunderstanding the right to bear arms and injecting your own desires.

The only thing sadder then the events that took place are the posters that seem water to forward their agenda off of them right now. No thoughts and prayers for those that passed and their families, just head first into the political bullshit. Sad.

Most of the victims families in previous shootings have gone right out within a week to speak out on gun control.

It's about dang time we stop this crap from happening instead of always sending thoughts and prayers to some new victim's families.

WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Agree with Derek above. For once try to hold your political views and let's think of the victims and families.

My thoughts and prayers have done nothing to stop future mass shootings. There is no agenda here, there is no political bias.

So do nothing? Sit back and roll the dice that my children are not going to be shot today? I don't have the answers either, quite honestly.

No Vroom....what I know about my Right to Bear Arms has been taught to me by my friends here at HROT. As I said, this is no big deal....a few lives to protect out right to bear arms is a justifiable trade off. I think this is where the "guns don't kill people, people kill people" disclaimer is interjected. Vroom....do you have your gun close by....in case you need it? Remember to turn on your night light, too.

Simple answer, create a registry nationally of firearms, require licensing, and do extended background checks with mental health professionals allowed to put you on a list to prevent you from obtaining a gun.

I don't believe in the assault weapons ban or magazine limitations because historically these have not shown to do any good. Also because the difference between a legal rifle and assault rifle is mostly based on cosmetic features. That's because assault weapons are expensive and big and not terribly useful for most crimes.

As for schools being the place for mass shootings it makes sense. Most mass shooters are young people. So naturally they go to a place where they have a history.

This fantasy that if everyone's carrying a gun people will stop the shooter is silly. All it will do is just lead to people pulling their guns in arguments.

I'll take empty platitudes over partisan bickering every day of the week and twice on Sunday. Neither accomplishes anything, but one is at least an indicator of human civility.

There will be plenty of time to dissect what went wrong here and discuss ways to mitigate future incidents. But right now the bodies haven't even assumed room temperature yet and we don't know anything at all about the shooter yet. We don't know what weapon(s) he used or how he obtained them. We don't know his religious or political leanings. We don't know his mental state. We don't if there were any red flags leading up to this incident.

But, as usual, it took just seconds for posters on every side of the gun rights issue to being staking out their positions.

Put an Extraordinary tax guns and ammo. Pay armed security guards to watch over all schools, movie theaters, sporting events, etc. Just like gasoline. If you buy gas, you pay a tax to rebuild the roads that are being ruined. I you buy a gun or ammo, you should pay a tax for to rebuild the security that is being ruined.

Always have my weapon close - don't need a night light it has nite sites. Nowhere has anyone on here said you have the right to bear arms and shoot whomever, where ever. That is your own fantasy land and you are a prime example of why the mental health needs to be taken into account for owning a weapon.

I'm going to push back against this. Every time this happens the same crowd tells us to shut up and pray while nothing gets done. Action is empathy and the only prayer any god ever answers. And that all starts by people putting away the tears, admitting there is a problem and getting on with the business of formulating a solution.

Don't piss and moan about posters here taking political positions.....talk to your GDed NRA for allowing and supporting these types of murders of innocents in the holy name of their agenda.......Guns of all types for every one! Screw the NRA and their whole misplaced agenda.

OK you and I aren't too far off. I totally agree we should do all we can to try and prevent the mentally ill or criminals to have weapons. Honestly though I just think if someone wants a gun nothing will ever prevent that.
It doesn't mean we shouldn't try as I think preemptive measures are the only hope.

But see here is the thing. . . there isn't. The countdown to the next mass shooting is counting down already. It won't be long.

Honestly here is what seems to be happening. . . The gun rights people want to tell us that we should wait for a little while after a mass shooting to start discussing how we put a stop to them. That sounds good right. But the problem is that by the time we're done mourning the last mass shooting . . . THERE IS ANOTHER FREAKING MASS SHOOTING THAT WE ARE SUPPOSE TO MOURN AND TOTALLY NOT TALK ABOUT HOW WE STOP MASS SHOOTINGS.

It's like we where fighting a war and a sniper killed one of our guys and then when a few of us start talking about ways of taking down the sniper another person insists that we must have a few moments of silence to mourn the guy we just lost. So we go ahead and have a moment of silence and by the time we're done mourning another dude gets shot. So again we start talking about "hey how we gonna take down this sniper" but yet again someone interjects that we must have a moment of silence for the 2nd dead guy before we talk about taking down the sniper. And we keep doing that and having moments of silence for everyone until everyone's silent cause we're all freaking dead.

We can sit here and mourn the dead until we are all also dead or we can freaking do something about it. I choose action.

For the record I think there are things we can do outside of gun control too. Our mental health system has to be improved. Everyone having access to mental health services without worrying about cost would probably be a good start to that.
