Just started for sinus infection/bronchitis that keeps sticking around. ENT gave it to me.

Fun laundry list of possible side effects. Achilles tendon rupture is one of them. Aortic aneurysm is another. In fact, there is a paranoid reddit group dedicated to that class of antibiotic.

That may very well what I was on for 6 weeks after my artificial knee became infected the last time. Major joint pain for many weeks after.

Long time for a potent drug. Unrelated to the knee I assume? Supposedly much more an issue for the senior crowd. 10 day stint here. Going to be paranoid that doing anything physical will result in a tendon rupture.

Recall your dosage?

Not for sure, it may have been a different drug, but that was a serious side affect. I've had 2 bouts of infection going to my knee, both times they were able to clean it out and save my knee from being removed. There is 6 weeks of IV antibiotics and 6 weeks of oral. The first time the put me on a high dose of Amoxicillin. It ripped me up for the whole 6 weeks. The last time they used a different antibiotic and it attacked my joints.

I dont know if it would be considered potent vs more broad spectrum... I don't think I'd ever do it for a sinus infection though... unless you have an "allergy" to penicillin/cephlosporins, which id still not do it.... a knee infection/bone has a lot of data and good option to avoid 6wks of IV... of course that all depends on cultures though.

I'd be more concerned about cdiff than those other side effects you listed

Yeah I've read it's not recommended as a first line. Although I did try amoxicillin and then doxycycline.

I had a sinus infection like this once before and I think I ended up with levoquin.

But yeah, been consuming kefir and prebiotic foods to try to thwart total ruination of my gut.

(was reading that levoquin disrupts but doesn't necessarily nuke all strains; think doxy was a harder hitter, but seemed to fair ok gut wise)

Levofloxacin 750 mg once a day. Not sure if it's the same, but it effed me up for several weeks after I stopped. I take Amoxicillin twice a day now as preventive.

Edited to add, it's the same.

Optic nerve issues are a much bigger problem.

Doxy would be best for your gut and actually most studies say it is cdiff protective (or all tetracyclines) clinda and quinolones have highest relative risk of cdiff... augmentin or cefadroxil would've been a better second step imho. The type of bugs Levo covers that those don't would not be associated with a sinus infection... but it will pry work just fine and statistically unlikely to be harmed.. but eventually numbers catch up to everyone and beta lactams have much more favorable profile

Preventative antibiotic? How long ago was your surgery?
A year ago, I could stop them, it was up to me. Once you have had what I have had, you are susceptible to it. It's a hundred grand every time it happens. I end up at the University Medical center. My wife ends up doing the IV through a picc line. It's just not worth the risk.
