You ask to bum a ride and then say "I will help with gas?"
First, most people don't go alone so a 3rd or 4th wheel would be quite an inconvenience and quite awkward. Therefore ,my suggestion would have been to offer to pay for THE gas. Not some gas.

OK...I just want a freaking ride to Madison. I'm unable to drive right now. Non of my friends in Pella are going to Madison. My tailgate clan that I have had season tix with for 7 years in Kinnick are not going. I have the weekend available to do whatever the hell I want to do and I want to go to freakin' Madison to see my beloved freakin' hawkeyes to kick some badger ass. I'm not a weirdo, I don't want raped, I am not going to give oral to anyone! I don't want to rent a car or take a bus. I just want a lift to and from Madison!! I will pay for the gasoline!
About 3 months ago I dropped my subscription to Rivals. I have 2 threads posted about simply wanting to get a lift to cheesehead land. The various "you want raped, supply some grass, blow a trucker, rent a car, you need to get your life straigtened out, etc. are a reminder of exactly why I dropped the subscription.
How about I get this reply! "Dude..I'm headed to Wisky for the game. Do you want a ride? Call me and we'll make arrangements to get you there and back." Is that too much to think might happen? My goodness.

Why are you unable to drive right now? Do you not have a license? Do you have a license but not a vehicle (or at least one that can make it to Madison and back)?
I'm guessing DUI or super poor. Probably planning to write a post-dated check for the gas money.
