Anyone else concerned about McCollum?

I understand he’s an outstanding coach, teaches and practices solid fundamentals, he’s a winner, gets more out of what he has, etc. They went 30-3 and beat a decent Big12 Missouri team in the opening round.

What bothers me is whether he can recruit and coach the kind of strong, fast athletes to compete night in and night out in the B1G. I’m sorry but his players look pretty Caucasian, not unlike some of FM’s lineups. They faded in the second half against TT today, a lot like Fran’s teams. Can BM take his coaching skills and obvious talents — particularly in the new NIL era — to the next level at a place like Iowa and be competitive?

Flame away…

I think it is reasonable to ask about his ability to recruit nationally. I looked at his current roster. They are nearly all MO kids with some kids from LC which is somewhat understandable given his time in MO. However it is notable his staff comprises a bunch of white dudes.

I still think he is the best option

I’m always going to be concerned that a coach at Iowa can get the requisite athletes needed. But that’s why I’m sold on BM. He’s a basketball savant that I think can level the playing field for us.

One of his assistants is Tyler Sash's brother.

The entire program needs a serious toughness adjustment - we’ve been soft since the Davis years. BM is a good start on that path. And we’re always going to be behind as far as recruits go which means it’s even more important to land an excellent X and O coach.

Exactly, we need a guy that can do more with less. A guy like Ben McCollum.

That said, in the Big Ten, I'm pretty sure BM wouldn't still be recruiting DII level players. Yeah probably not a bunch of 4-5* guys necessarily... But better than he'd get at Drake, I would think.

Did Bo Ryan and Brad Stevens have rosters stacked with 4-5* recruits when they took their teams to B2B Final Fours? I doubt it very much.

I feel like the right coach can still have very good teams with just "decent" talent.

I want him fired for already getting fired.

What a dumb premise.

Coach A had white players and lost games.

Coach B had white players and lost a game.

White players = losses.

**** off dipshit.

McCollums players are nothing like McCaffery players.

He's gona be able to recruit better talent to a big ten school with 5-6 mil payroll than to Drake with a free education.

i don't have doubt about mccollum as much a general unease from devries apparently being the first choice and rated higher than bm

I wouldn't even know where to find it now as I've read so much junk recently but two things.

1. Many on his site wanted McCollum from the jump.

2. It was rumored that McCollum was the top choice for Beth. The wealthy donors wanted DeVries first.

I've posted multiple times - I don't know what a coach could possibly do who has not had a taste of the big-time yet to show that he is an absolute perfect fit for the Iowa head coaching job. He has proven that when all things are equal, his teams dominate the competition, and when his teams lack the raw talent of the competition, his teams overachieve and compete very well. I don't know if I could come up with a better description for the ideal candidate.

Where does one find these ratings?

Maybe Devries wasn’t the first choice, but the first available to be interviewed since he missed the tournament. Surely McCollum gets a pass for having a brilliant year by qualifying for the tournament? Hence not being immediately available to rush over to Iowa City while his team was practicing/playing.

I think McCollum, with this season's Iowa players in the B1G, would have gotten Iowa to the NCAA tournament with room to spare. Him as coach we see a dramatic improvement.

But Beth better work out this NIL issue, and recuiting in general, or he will get stuck with the same issue Fran had, yes. That part does concern me. I hope she doesn't think of this as a way out of getting quality athletes.

It appears Hawkeye Nation is very excited for Coach McCollum. In this new era of NIL, I am confident our Hawkeye fan base will rise up and do what is necessary. The man can flat-out coach. Go where Lute, Raveling, and Dr. Tom recruited, in basketball-riich Illinois, and the upper Midwest, and get Hawkeyes like Ronnie Lester, Ed Horton, Kevin Boyle, Steve Krafcisin, Kevin Gamble, Roy Marble, Kenyon Murray, and more.

Why would that give you unease?

Boosters liked DeVries more, he's a little more proven and is related to a famous football player. I don't think that Beth ever did. Even at the very start of the process when it seemed like DeVries could be realistic people were reporting that she seemed to prefer McCollum

Actually I think NIL is just as important, maybe more
Ok, we all saw what BM did with a rotation made up mostly of DII players and, I'm assuming, little else bought with NIL $. And I think we all would have been thrilled this year if our Hawks had made it to the Dance and won a game. This dude can coach. I've heard that his buddies Dusty May and the Texas Tech coach look to him as the guru, not the other way around. Imagine what he will do with a little more NIL $.

How do you even know he’s interested in Iowa. What do we have to offer over other jobs with better support?

You might have won the dumbest post of the year which is hard on here. A coach leaves Drake and the entire team but 1 player also leaves. The winningest D2 coach comes in and has a total rebuild of roster. He brings 4 starters from his D2 team and assembles a roster that becomes the darling of college basketball and goes 31-4 and dominates an SEC school with 5 star Mark Mitchell who had transferred from Duke. Carry on.

Can’t wait for the announcement of the hire and then the reports on the roster building.

Spring football practice news, new coach building the basketball roster/team…..life’s good for us Hawkeye fans!!!!
Me too! But, the "experts" may not be impressed with all his recruits. They may not be putting up huge offensive stats. As he has said, he recruits dawgs and team players. So, we shouldn't be worried or surprised if some aren't the highest rated. Right now, I'm thinking of Josh Jacobs who played FB at Bama and is now one of the best backs in the NFL. He was a two-star coming out of HS, but he is a dawg!
