The solution to almost every problem during the GOP debate was that the private market will solve it? I'm not sure any of the Republican candidates know what job they're applying for. It is the leader of the Federal government. If you're not going to use the Federal government to solve anything, you're basically admitting that you won't be doing anything once elected.

And there is the difference between progressives and conservatives. The main job of the federal govt is to keep us safe, not be all intrusive and give us everything. Freedom allows us to make our own way, not hold the hand of the govt from birth to death.

A small govt gets out of the way of the American person to lead their own life. That's the job of the president.

HHHHHEEEEELLLLLLOOOOOO welcome to the differences in the Republican and the Democrat party.......the government is the answer to everything vs the government is in the way of progress of the American people and a drain on our freedoms........

What's the free market solution to the uninsurable? Death? Is that the kind of people we need to become?

I find it disappointing that instead of giving actual details of how they will solve our problems, the Republicans simply bash the government and declare that somehow the problems will magically solve themselves. Not very reassuring talk from the people who will be put in charge.

And I disagree that the job of the President is to depend upon the market to relieve him of having to do any actual work.

that is simple, let the feds stay out, let the insurance companies stay out. let the uninsurables pay cash for doctors visits and surgeries and such. hospital stays. just like they pay cash for a cable bill or a car payment.

the free market and competition would be like this: this doctor $50 for office visit, that doctor is $39.99

It doesn't really have one. Hence the need for the government. The market had decades to get more people insured. It mostly failed at this mission. Only when the government stepped in did we finally see major progress.

Lets pretend that the Republicans aren't into big government too, and that this isn't some weird Ayn Rand phase for the republicans.

and allow everyone to have a medical savings account of like 25K they save up eventually, tax deferred, and a simple issue catastrophic plan with 25K deductible, no health questions

except 100's of millions lost their insurance and doctor so that 9 million could be insured, except that

At this point I really think the Republicans need to stop pretending they're for freedom. Dictating who you can marry, what language you can speak, and trying to build literal walls around our country is the opposite of freedom.

Engaging in logical fallacies seems to be a popular pastime among liberals.

'Republicans prefer less government intrusion in our lives. Ergo, Republicans think government should do absolutely nothing.'

Surely you're not so stupid as to believe that, so what's the point of being a liar?

a net loss is not major progress, unless that was your goal: to destroy the insurance system and get everyone on the fed payout system

It failed because the govt regulated the shit out of it and didn't allow it to function properly.

I didn't watch most of the debate, but I think there's a slight distinction between what was said and the way you characterized it. Maybe it's a distinction without a difference, but what I think the Republicans/conservatives are saying is that the federal government isn't the answer to all questions or even to most of them, and shouldn't be the first option.

And the Republicans know very well what job they're seeking. It's the Democrats, epitomized by the one in the office now, who don't understand the job description. That's why Obama has been slapped down by the Supreme Court a number of times and has created or exacerbated disorder in so many situations.

If the job were home maintenance, the Republicans know their duty is to preserve, repair and otherwise protect the house; Democrats think it's a license to tear down the house and park a double-wide on the lot.

Are saying government can cure death? Holy crap, I'm onboard now! Where do I sign up?
they think they can. in fact, that's the kind of stuff ray Kurzweil is in to, I know he's a commie lib friend of Obama's. and buffett and all these guys. they want to replace our brains with computers and such. the type of thing yahoo and google and all these freaks are into

The SWISS are designing a wall. The definition of freedom, right? What do you have to say about them?

Or it failed because healthcare only functions properly when the government steps in to takes it over. The entire developed world uses government based healthcare. There simply aren't very many countries who use market based healthcare successfully. In fact, I can't think of one. They all seem to be second or even third tier systems.

Before the Federal government got all involved in healthcare, doctors would make house calls and would accept a chicken as payment for services rendered. Now a doctor can't tell you what he charges for anything and sends you to his business office manager to figure out what you owe.

Damn government forcing their fiat money system down our throats. I have a surplus of chickens, and no where to spend them!

It failed because the bottom line is profit, and not care for insurance companies.
then why did Obama insist the insurance companies get "all in" - with his plan??

do you think maybe he was trying to bankrupt them so he could swoop in and take them over with the fed backing, like he did with GM maybe? noooooo, he wouldn't do that would he?

What has the federal government solved for the people? Poverty, high healthcare costs, high education costs, low employment rates?

I can tin a little bit on that. I don't think in the long run insurance company participation will be needed.

There is none. That's why governments are necessary. However, the federal government's power and reach has grown way beyond what is necessary and healthy.

In fact, we have generations of lost souls in this country that are entirely dependent on the government. They have been robbed of their dignity. Many of these people want to work but can't find employment. And yet our federal government continues a policy of flooding the country with unskilled immigrant labor at a time when unemployment is sky high in the black urban communities. This is an example of our federal government actually inflicting damage on its own citizentry - it's most vulnerable citizens.

But, of course, there is no room for sanity here - it's either the "free market" or the "federal government."

I think maybe we agree, but I'm not sure for the same reasons. I do think it was NAFTA under Clinton that helped pushed a big wave of immigration our way, and the war on drugs has devastated the urban communities you mention, and held them firmly in a rut.

All of these would be far worse without the government. Take poverty rates, for example. Poverty plummeted after Social Security. It has undoubtedly been a good thing for seniors.

They had a chance to do that while getting 30 seconds to answer questions like "what is your biggest weakness?" The questions asked and the format used did not exactly provide opportunity to go into details on policy.
