Apparently, the Germans were the good guys in WWII? At least according to this moron.

As indefensible as a gas chamber for six million Jews and maybe 5 million others?
As indefensible as their Axis buddies the Japanese in the rape of Nanking or the forced rapes of Korean “Comfort Women”?
Yeah…not close.

JFC Goldie...

All of them are indefensible. This isn't a contest.

Also while very few thought Nazi Germany would survive through 1945 the total collapse in the spring of 1945 did take most by surprise.

Many, including Churchill, did not believe the Soviet Union would overwhelm Germany until the fall.

WW2 is now distant enough that many people have long forgotten that in times of war, good people can and will do bad things...
None of us were alive during WWII and thus we rely on history books and grandparents (or parents in my case) to share their personal memories of that time.
My Dad barely made it out of the Battle of the Bulge and saw so many horrific things it stayed with him all his life. Dresden was known for its beauty and Medieval architecture and remains known to this day for the “figurines” created by artists.
The war was for all intents and purposes won but the last ditch introduction of the V2 rockets over London kept up the horror of death and destruction by a desperate German government. The Dresden bombing was more British than American but admittedly one of Europe’s more beautiful cities was heavily damaged and a huge loss of life.
If we’re keeping a tally sheet however I think (as many others) that the score for ruthless destruction still adds up as a runaway score for the Germans.

WWII killed between 50 - 100 million people.

Nobody had clean hands. Goldy, your dad was lucky to get out of there alive. Glad he did.

Did he forget the bombings of Krakow and London?

Not surprised he is boys with Rogan
Well when you are off fighting in a war that an evil man started then only the women and kids will be at home, so not shocking, right?
I’m thinking that the news of this certainly had to be a last nail in the coffin for many of those men fighting what they knew was a losing war and the demoralization factor was enormous.

Women and children were not necessarily at home. Many were in the underground fighting. My pediatrician and her husband were.

No one was safe, not even our 'friends'.

Of course, Rouen was not the only French victim of Allied bombs, nor was it even the worst. Some 1,570 French cities and towns were bombed or hit by artillery fire by Anglo-American forces between June 1940 and May 1945. As an example of the devastation, it is estimated that 95 percent of Saint-Lô was destroyed; Carentan and Caen, too, were virtually flattened. Some figures show that 432,000 homes and apartments across France were destroyed and another 890,000 homes were damaged.

The number of French civilians killed and injured before, during, and after their liberation has long been a matter of heated debate in France. One French historian estimates that more than 50,000 men, women, and children died. During 1943 alone, some 7,458 French civilians were killed by the Allied bombing of France. The total number of dead could be as high as 70,000; more than 100,000 were wounded. The French certainly paid a high price for their liberation.

The movie (made in 73 I think) was interesting. Weird but interesting…
My step father had a class with Vonnegut back in the sixties (he taught at U of Iowa at the time). He went to Vonnegut's office hours one day and right when he walked in, Kurt yells at him "get the **** out of here". It goes without saying, he probably shouldn't have been an instructor and just stuck with writing. :)

I had a friend from Perpignan that was really pissed at Americans and Brits from all of it. We used to get into very heated arguments.

To be fair, the fire bombing of Dresden's civilian population is indefensible.
And was that the first major fire bombing in Nazi Germany? I have read that the Allieds did not foresee how the fires would suck in air and cause a fire out of control.

And you never want to see this but at the same time the nazis were horrendous and the Allies had to show supreme dominance to bring the war to a quick end. The Nazis started it by bombing residential London, they pounded Polish and French and other cities early in the war. The idea is to end the war and cut down on your own casualties and others.

Hamburg in the summer of 1943 was even worse {in terms of death & destruction} but that lasted just over a week.

Not worth heated arguments anymore. It is in the past. Remember the history, forget the hate.
I get along very well with my French friends these days.
I’ve had a lot of German friends as well. Very different stories from each one of them.

One of my friend’s fathers tried to explain to me why so many people just accepted Hitler and just tried to live their lives. He cited the experiment that was done to show how people would cave when the threat of killing their family was used.

My friend was 19 and her father was probably in his ‘40’s. So he was probably born in the late 20’s, early 30’s.

He explained to me that there was no choice in Germany under Hitler. People did what they were told to do. He was put in an SS school when he was 8.

I'm glad you get along with both sides. I guess my default is who was the aggressor? In WWI it was a clusterfvck. In WWII it was Germany. Not even close. So zee Germans that said they had no choice, I call bullshit.

Northern is a very *special* kind of stupid Goldy.

We let him ramble on here as a form of therapy.

It's best to just nod and laugh and go about your day.
He's mailing it in lately. White knighting for Putin and Hitler is just part of his slide.

Too much MMA fighting has his brain scrambled.

Stupid comments.

Germans got the ball rolling on civilian bombing in the Spanish civil war and the Blitz. They ended up reaping what they sowed

That said…the destruction of Dresden 3 months before the end of the war was over kill. The rail yards were definitely a worthy target.

The city center…not so much. Germany was still fighting so ultimately fair game.

War is hell…

Anyway, I’ve been to Dresden a couple times and it’s an under rated tourist destination. They rebuilt the city center after reunification and it’s pretty awesome architecture.

They were kids. They were taken from their parents and put into SS training camps. But, I agree that their parents caved.

The story I told was from the ‘70’s. My friends at the time were born in the late 30’s and 40’s. I’d say they didn’t have a choice. The SS came and picked people and took their kids. I also had a friend that was a kinder kid. He was bred.

Good lord Americans are dumb and weak now.

We got MAGA folk acting like we were the bad guys….there was a lot of awful stuff in WWII but the ends justified the means.

The kids weren't brought into it until late in the game. They had a choice. I'm not forgiving them or our current MAGA youth. Learn from history or repeat it.

I survived the bombing of Dresden and continue to believe it was a war crime

As a prisoner of war held in Dresden, I still suffer the memories of those terrible events and my anger refuses to subside

As the incendiaries fell, the phosphorus clung to the bodies of those below, turning them into human torches. The screaming of those who were being burned alive was added to the cries of those not yet hit. There was no need for flares to lead the second wave of bombers to their target, as the whole city had become a gigantic torch. It must have been visible to the pilots from a hundred miles away. Dresden had no defences, no anti-aircraft guns, no searchlights, nothing.
