Apple got caught selling your private convos to third parties even if you didn't activate Siri.

Hey do you remember back in….what now, 07 ish? When we found out our government had access to pretty much everything we posted and typed and recorded and it was covered by the patriot act and nobody cared?

For reference I’ve been an Apple user for about 15 years now. This is news to no one who has been paying attention to anything.

We could have tried to secure our data rights a long time ago. Now that bird has long been cooked.

But thanks for finally taking notice.

Guess what, the government is also going to use cameras to monitor your movements, and will even use surveillance equipment to cite you for traffic violations.
This fight has already been lost.

They were initially conducting surveillance that wasn't covered by the Patriot Act, when Obama continued it is when Snowden leaked the fact and they then updated the laws to protect the companies handing over the data.

I remember when they passed the E911 bill in the late 90s, and I told my buddy, 'they're going to have everyone paying for their own tracking device.'

Sucks to be right sometimes.

I'm all for that as far as intersections go. Running red lights is a staple in Florida. See it every day...

Ask your alexa if she listens to you when you don't ask foe her and report back.

My echo says "I don't know how to respond" and my alexa dots say "I am unable to answer at this time".

You don't hate them enough.

Just remember we're talking about 150 zettabytes of data world-wide. Everything you've ever typed, said, searched for, etc. is stored. I stand by what I've said in all the 'NSA is spying on me' threads--people don't really care about privacy, they care about not being embarrassed. If anyone truly cared about privacy, they'd ditch their smart phones and never touch their PC unless they logged in through a VPN.

the headline in the tweet (there is no article it is linked to) only says siri unintentionally recorded some convos not that apple sold any convos. i can forgive the former but if apple is selling recordings it would both shock and sadden me. i've been happy buying their phones and computers because i thought they are one of the only companies that makes their money directly up front with their excellent hw and sw, and not surreptitiously like other companies that subsidize shittier devices and sell data. in fact, i was under the impression apple devices even masks IP addresses to protect their users.
so is it true or not true that apple sells customer data? (op's headline says so but the attached tweet doesn't)

i will say that many times i notice the microphone red dot indicator is lit on my awatch or phone when no apps are running and the app history and microphone permissions list show nothing. this has always puzzled me. thousands of people (per internet) have experienced this as well and i haven't found a decent explanation

Does the microphone have to be on in order to summon Siri?

Semi related, off the wall question...accepting that our phones are spying on us for a moment...is this something that a search warrant could potentially uncover?

Would the "expectation of privacy" outrank the fact that incriminating utterances are probably stored somewhere in one of these giant data centers, etc?

Note - I am an Android phone user but there are signs that tell me my phone is much more "aware" of my action(s) than I would prefer. For one, I am convinced that it can sense movement in close proximity to the phone and then "allows" certain text messages or alerts to sound. I think it is in "wait" mode, realizing that my lack of movement is an indication that I am either sleeping or away from it, etc. Then when my hand is about 3 inches from the phone as I am reaching to pick it up, etc, it beeps and there is a message, etc.

They're listening...they are always listening. :)

i suppose so but what i was talking about isn't related to siri. even without siri activated and with no apps with permissions to the mic and with no active apps the red dot still stays on.

i am resigned to having big brother access (hopefully with legal due process etc) to any and all data with the understanding that it keeps us safer but i'm not ok with it being sold commercially
but yeah i've noticed creepy stuff also...utter something i haven't mentioned in months and a related ad immediately pops up or pick up the phone and bam a scammer immediately calls...
